I talked with a few budies and sugested we go to madison Wi to play a few pool tounaments for some thing to do . My budie told me that three realy nice pool halls that I wanted to go to have just went out of business. This realy sucks. I think it has to do with the smoking bad. It realy sucks ....

I hear the smoking ban is hurting a lot of bars and other businesses. Luckily it hasn't taken affect in my town. One bar tried to do it on their own and they got so many complaints and lost so much business that they had to end up letting people smoke.

many threads on this

Yup, it sucks for us pool players. I think a few will survive in the long run.

Yep, it sucks big time. The Blue Chalk Club closed about a year after they relocated to Middleton, where smoking is allowed. Cuenique is going out of business, I heard. That place has been around for a long time. What other place is going under? There's only two other places that I know of that have 9' tables.

Cuenique is going out of business??? Does Jerry Briesath still own it? I used to go there alot back in the 80's and early 90's before I moved from WI to Florida.

Here in Houston the Non-Smoking thing took affect Sept 1st...it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

They'll be back! Pool is not going away, EVER! It just has it's ebbs and flows like any other business. I would not hesitate to open another room if the situation was right.

There is a lot of vacant space out there, and they will be glad to have a tenant that will take a big chunk of it off their hands and sign long term leases. The No Smoking laws in California don't faze me one bit. That's just an excuse to fail.

My last place, I had a small patio outside for smokers. Easy solution. And all the non smokers love it. It's so much nicer inside without smoking, clean air to breath.

a little story about my former hometown pool room

Local business owner protests smoking ban
By: Erica Byfield

PADUCAH, Ky. - As of Wednesday the city of Paducah had been smoke-free for 88 days. That's the exact number of days since one Heartland man started his protest against the ban.

"I was raised that if you're right you stick to your guns and I think I'm right," said Dickie Todd. Therefore, he says that is the motto he is using to operate his pool hall.

"I just want to run my business the way I think it should be run," said Todd.

If you're going to play pool at Side Pockets expect to see and smell smoke even though it is in violation of Paducah's No Smoking Ordinance.

Todd feels so strongly about it he stuck a sign on the front door that says, "This is a smoking facility."

"I think pretty much it explains itself," he said.

Leaders in Paducah don't see it that way.

Mayor Bill Paxton says he expects citizens to follow the ordinance.

On June 7th, a local police officer gave Todd a citation for blatantly allowing a patron to smoke.

"The citation itself, I think it is unjust," said Todd.

Todd hired lawyer Jeremy Ian Smith to fight it. He filed a motion Tuesday to dismiss the states case based on the constitutionality of the ordinance.

"This isn't just some guy on the southside trying to stick it to city hall," said Smith. "It's a business owner on the southside trying to make a living."

Dickie Todd says he's lost a huge chunk of his profits since the city imposed the ban.

"Business is down probably 40 to 50 percent overall, which is a substantial loss and I'm going to do what everything I can to get it back," said Todd.

Even if that means battling it out in court.

There's one place inside Side Pocket where you can't smoke and that is over the pool tables. Todd said that is just the way he likes it.

Right now, Dickie Todd faces a $50 fine, but if he gets two more in 12 months he could lose his operating license

pool is truly in a decline. We do not have a smoking ban here in Florida, but business is down. The housing market and no extra cash for people to spend on fun stuff. It is true that pool has it's ebs and flows. But, when your in it it seems you'll never climb out. I blame poker and adult arcades. I've lost many a poolplayer to poker and now folks are using their extra cash to play penny machines at the adult arcades. We just have to keep doing what we are doing and cultivate new players.
Pray for a pool movie.

Anybody who hears about a poolroom closing that wants to sell all their tables, just let me know. I will make them a cash offer for the lot on Gold Crowns and Valleys. If you turn them on to me, you will get a finder's fee. One or two points on the whole deal.

I'm in the market for up to 50 tables.

That's what I was told by the guy who ran the leagues when I called the Blue Chalk Club a couple of weeks ago to find out when the fall nine ball league was gonna start. I haven't verified it yet, though as it wasn't someplace I went to because it's downtown. I don't think Jerry has owned it for a few years. They got in some trouble with the law because of some fights and crowd problems after DJ nights.

you hit the nail on the head, a little of each of those and poof, the pool rooms shut down. It was a tough gig 20 years ago before the internet, now its all but impossible. the numbers simpally dont pencil out.

Honestly, I love the smoking ban here in louisville.

Pool seems to be going strong here from what I can tell.

The jackass attitude this guy has is the problem. For years it was "acceptible" to have a smoke ridden health hazard that exposes your customers and staff to serious health risks. Thankfully people have pulled their heads out of their asses and realized what a bad idea this truly is.

Its very simple, adapt your business to roll with the punches or close your doors. I wouldn't be suprised to see a national smoking ban in a few years.

On a different note, going from light em up to no smoking is not exactly the best approach. A transitional approach to requiring proper ventilation and giving a tax break for a few years to lower the cost would be a more reasonable approach before finally moving on to a full on ban on smoking.

I can understand that he is upset over losing revenue, but its very simple.

1. cigarettes are extremely harmful to not only the person using them, but to others around them.

2. cigarettes cost the american public untold dollar amounts in health care especially in the elderly who have smoked for a long time. THis is a preventable illness.

Lets not overlook the obvious. Elected officials that "represent the public" voted on this issue and chose to make the ban city wide. Perhaps he should go somewhere more aligned with this views like Texas. It sucks that he is losing revenue, but he needs to adapt.

Bomber, if the magnolia bar (a punk bar in old louisville) can adjust so can these old man.

Is there anyone reading this thread that works selling pool tables? I'd be curious if pool table sales are down as well.

This is just anecdotal, but it seems that when I was in high school and college everyone I knew knew how to play pool. Everyone wasn't super into it, but at least played socially.

I'm now 39, married with kids in the burbs with a table in my basement--and it seems like not that many people I know play pool.

Is pool just less popular in general now? I'm not talking about pool halls, really, but just about your average dude (or woman) that you work with, live near, etc, not knowing how to play.

Growing up, that would have been like not knowing how to ride a bike or something.

47 million pool players in the USA...I don't know if that's up or down from other years. Johnnyt

I wish I agreed, and I hope I'm wrong

I hate to say this, but I don't agree. Not unless some catastrophic incident causes us to
revert to the circumstances and conditions of the past.

Case in point: Where is the closest:
Blacksmith, Heathkit (DYI electronics building store), TV Repair / Fix-it shop, Wagon
Repair shop (OK I'm exhausted, I admit it), etc. :)

Not sure if you like the Brunswick medalist, but here is a listing for some tables on ebay located in Florida. Looks like a pretty sweet deal.
