Are Challenge Matches bad for pool????

This thread is refering to what was said in a previous thread about "The Worst for 2008" I commend that person for bringing this to our attention. I say NO WAY! anything that attracts attention and new attention is very good for us. See my comments on the previous thread. The writer of the atricle or the quote from Billiards Digest is WRONG>

We wonder why we are stuck in limbo if one of the biggest publications in the biz in anyway is knocking anything that promotes the sport, we will never get anywhere.
 
Uhhh...did I miss something?

EDIT: Never mind I got it. I am not a fan of matches where someone just puts up a prize and 2 people play. That is an exhibition in my mind. Which is better than nothing, don't get me wrong. Anytime people can see pros play it is great. Just not what I like to watch.

As far as being bad for the game....anyone playing the game anywhere is good for the game.

JCIN, it seems there was a report in BD that says that Challenge Matches are bad for the sport. It's that simple, who I mean would say that especially with the awesome work that TAR are doing to bring this stuff to life? Thats all,

We agree, it is not the same as the players putting up their own money but getting these guys to my part of the world to play for their own money isn't easy. Unless they have some financial encouragemnet they would not come here to play with their own money. However like we both said any attention is good right?

I agree,i honestly believe the future in this sport is gambling high action matches like TAR has presented,the tournaments just dont seem to cut it.I like knowing 2 guys are going off for 10k,thats action to me,especially a 10 ahead or something where it shows the true player,not a quicky race to 7,anyone of these guys can win in a race to 7,but an ahead set is where you seperate the men from the boys IMO. :cool:
 
The matches like TAR put on PPV are going to be very good for pool in the very near future IMO. I believe we are going to see more people putting them on soon. The IPT has started it, even though the players don't put up the cash...YET. Jeanette Lee is having a production studio built right in her new poolroom. I don't know that its for challenge matches but it can only be used for a few things.

When a few more people/companies get into it there will be matches on the net every day/night of the week. When TV sees how more and more people are ordering pool on a PPV basis they will get into the mix in some way...maybe like they do with PPV Boxing and other sports. Maybe someone will set up a cable station with a monthly fee just for pool.

I don't know much about the tech part of it but I know that new stuff comes along all the time. In most cases this allows for better pricing while still making a fair profit. The TV part might take a few years to join in, but I believe the PPV is going to get huge. When it does take off and there are several companies doing it, I hope we all remember who was the first to put it on and won't mind paying a buck or two more for theirs. Thank you TAR. JohnnyT, You have hit the nail on the head. I also believe that doing this now and getting theinternet presence will force TV to take notice of the numbers. Things will move from there, also like you said getting the enthusiasts, players and companies with the $$ is the key to all this in the beginning. If I could get $1.00 fom everyone on this forum alone I could produce a good show every month with top players. As we said it's not the same unless they have something to lose so there has to be either the TAR way of out up your own $ or an incentive of some kind that makes them want it more. I think even in a paid challenge they want to win but like the IPT just did and gave a cruise or something nice from a sponsor adds to it,
