Are JP's just decoration?

I have played for 50 years, and only once did I have a JP set, and that was for a jump cue. I have not had a problem with dirt getting in the joint area at all, and so I ask are JP's just for decoration mostly?

I am having a cue made in February, and can't decide if I should have JP's for it or not? BTW, it will be 5/16 x 14 SS joint with 2 shafts.

I suppose they can be partially decorative as well, but feel that They also help to protect the joint faces from physical damage. In some case they may even help to keep moisture from making direct contact with the faces, although That might would depend on the material they are made from, some materials such as Delrin may more less displace moisture.. Some materials that could sponge moisture may depend on how well they are sealed. Short answer is No, I do not feel that They are purely decorative.

J/ps are for protection , but have gone above that , they can be very decrative also . Jim

In my opinion, joint protectors are just like chalk holders and pocket markers, invented to give pool players something else to spend their money on:grin:

I'm not saying I don't have any, nor am I saying i don't like them. Just saying that they are not really NECESSARY.

Joint protectors do just what they are named. They are protectors. They protect the edge of the joint from finish chips. They also serve as a moisture blocker which cuts down on warpage. They can also protect your cue case from the end of the joint pin. I have seen the joint pins sticking out the end of a few cases in my lifetime.

If a shaft somehow falls to the floor it will almost always land on the corner of the joint collar. The best case is nothing happens but most often the finish chips off that spot and frequently you even chip the collar itself. Repair is an expensive pain it the butt. A plastic protector is cheap insurance.

They are both. If you buy a set from Jim Baxter, you will have the best of both worlds. They are simply beautiful protection.

Years ago, in the early 90's or late 80's, I was the proud owner of a JF SW. It was ebony and alvis(SP) with deco rings in all positions and nice linen wrap. I loved that cue and would clean it after each use. I did everything I could to protect the cue from any damage, dings, or, nicks. After all, I had 1200 in that cue and it was a lot of money for a guy that was working two jobs and just barely holding on.

One late evening after closing up the pool hall, my second job and 16 work hours later, I was walking out the front door, tipped my pool case over my arm while reaching for my keys. You guessed it, one of the shafts slid out of the case because I had forgot to sipper the top after showing one of the customers the cue that evening. I was lucky on one hand that only the one shaft slid out and hit the concrete. This left a large chip in the joint collar that looked like HDS. If I had a set of cheapo J/Ps I would have been damage free. I was sick over that for a long, long time.

Another advantage I have found is that if you have a JB case interior or deep tubes, it sure does make it easy to grab what you need with the J/Ps.

Thanks

for the replies. I think you have convinced me to get some for the cue I am going to have made.

You got some great advice in this thread, and being a past customer of Jim Baxter, I can attest his product, and customer care are second to none. My dealing with him and his staff was fantastic, and I was completely 100% satisfied.I am in no way associated with Mr.Baxter...I just wanted you to know you wont go wrong with dealing with him. One of the best ways you can protect your investment of a custom made cue.

Agree

Headmuses is correct about Jim, he has created a couple of sets for me, the process is very easier, the time is days not weeks, the quality is spot on and the cost is close to robbery it is so cheap.

Since JP's are for protection, should they be a little bigger than the cue joint so they protect the edge of the finish better??

Actually, the only reason I have them on my cues is so I can get them out of my case easier. I have never dropped my butt or shaft but figure the most likely time I would is when removing those JPs.
