Just found out that I'm either going to the Big Island either at Christmas or in May which every works out best for everyone else that is going. So I thought I would find out where the poolhalls are and make sure I fit them into my vacation.

Thanks

If you're into volcano, that's the place to go. Other than that, there's not much to do in Big Island. I couldn't find any poolhall when I was there last Dec. In Hilo, there are helicopter flights. That was fun. Leave your pool cues at home I suggest.

Thanks sir we never did meet although we came close in Daytona that one time.

What side of the island are you staying on???

My wife and I went there for 2 weeks and stayed in Waikoloa.

There was a small place I played at for an hour or so that we drove by.

The absolute best thing that we did was take the helocopter tour around the whole island. Not cheap, but was a blast.

If you want me to check out the map, I could tell you approx where the pool hall (if you can call it that!!) was.

3 years ago I was in Waikiki for two weeks. I remember going to a pool hall called, Hawaiian Brian's once or twice. They had a few nice nightly tournaments there and let women play for free, which was nice for me:).

i used to live on the big island, i farmed taro, noni, and kava. all you gotta do is pick up a phone book and you'll find quite a few. as a tourist, i'd stay away from the south part of the island (puna, pahoa). bus is cheap, or if you rent a car its no problem. you could do the full hawaiian experience and just hitch hike wherever you wanna go.

if you want an image of pure beauty, check out makalawena, its on the kona side of the island. getting there can be a pain, but the reward is tremendous! i used to hitch hike there whenever i could. theres more to the big island than volcano, trust me.

see if you can take a day trip to kauai, inter island flights won't break the bank and it's the most beautiful of the islands that i've been too. have fun.

I'm staying at Wiakoloa Beach Resort. Is that where you stayed? My friend has a time share there and is renting 3 condos for a week.

We stayed at a place called the Shores. It was a really nice 3 bedroom, 2 bath condo owned by a family that I built a custom house for.

It is about 20-30 min north of the airport and just past the shopping area at Kings.

I golfed at the Waikoloa Beach Course - it was awesome!!

The little pool hall was very close to Kona. We were heading north on the 11 and it was on the right side.

Kinda crude, but you should be able to find it.

I am so sorry but I don't know of any actual pool halls on the Big Island anymore:sorry:

Back in the late 90's Kelly Oyama (used to be a WPBA Touring Pro owned a hall there) but after it closed I never heard of any other pool halls opening. Sad really, they used to have a pretty good amount of players from there that used to come to Oahu for the Aloha Open every year - don't know what happened to all those players.:(

The golf is good at Waikaloa though! I used to play for the Oahu Jr. Golf Association and the season-ending tournament was always held there. Have a great vacation!

I wouldn't call the place I played a "pool Hall". More like a small storefront that someone put 3 or 4 tables in.

I can't remember if there was a sign or if you could just see the tables through the front window.

It was raining hard that day and I saw it while just driving by, so if its still there, you should be able to find it.

Russ.......

ps - We also had a great time driving around the entire island and visiting various sights along the way.

That really stinks its the big Island and no poolhall. I plan on playing golf as much as possible so that will be good. Thanks for the information Phoebe.

Poolhustler thanks for all the information you posted and the map even without a major poolhall I'm sure it will be a great vacation.
