Launching WNT TV without an app in 2025 is a questionable move to say the least. Most people at some point will want to watch it on a smart tv. As well as pool halls with multiple TVs. Having to open a web browser, type in the website, log in, and then mirror it to a tv is so clunky and dated. The WNT TV app should be right there on my phone or smart tv home screen. Auto logged in and ready to go. Fingers crossed hopefully there’s an app on the way.

Amazon Silk has favorites like any other browser. Just Login on the laptop or phone and all other devices including the TV don't need to login.

It’s so much easier converting your subscribers (and potential millions of unsubscribed traffic) to paying members within the YouTube app, than trying to migrate them off the app to a website. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get a fraction of memberships they could have if they had streamlined it through YouTube. It’s still early stages though, maybe it’s all in the plans.
Some drawbacks with this route is the lack of control over selling ads and disruptive copyright issues. Youtube at any time can completely destroy your business because someone decides that their copyrighted music is playing in the background. You have control over licensing of music on platforms other than youtube. You also have control over _when_ ads play on other platforms.

plus youtube decided in 2024 to go mental with ad lengths and frequency

Ah, Google. I side with Badpenquin on that. The way they deal with customers, both business and consumer, is pretty bad. A preying quasi-monopoly based on my professional experience.

But I digress. Yes, I plan to sign up for MR once the first big event comes along.

I'd sign up sooner, but still have a DAZN account for a channel that no longer shows pool. MR will no longer air on DAZN.

I can easily view the WNT website thru my new HDTV or watch on my iPad Pro. But MR will probably have to create an app.

Using Google/Youtube is problematic, but web URLs aren't great for those with older TVs or devices.

My guess is MR wants to see how many sign up before committing to an app. Seems like WNT.TV came along rather suddenly. They knew they needed a DAZN divorce, but didn't have everything in place when they came to that conclusion. We'll see.

There are more options than an app or youtube. They could employ a simple augmented streaming solution that is white label and would be free to monetize their content as they see fit. They would have complete control of their analytics and could simply embed a player on their website behind a login or paywall.

This could be complemented by an app on any device/screen. My day job is working for a company that provides these solutions. Shoot for a few dollars more we could build out a complete Netflix like experience dedicated to all of Matchroom’s content not just pool.

ETA: This could be for all ondemand and live streaming content.

I didn't know that DAZN wouldn't air the MR pool any longer. I cancelled my DAZN account but still have months that are pre-paid. 😡

I'm sure I'll subscribe to WNTTV because I like the content and support what they've done for the game.

Like others, I can't stand the idea of casting to the TV. I'll probably end up watching on my 27” computer monitor until they release a smart TV app.

Does anyone know when the next major MR tournament is? I didn't see a schedule on the website.

Well then, you should know that matchroom hasn't rolled their own, they are using StreamAMG. It would be StreamAMG who creates an app, they might already have them, who knows?

Also note from the FAQ:

They may continue the shenanigans of not having streaming available in certain regions if they have made deals with networks. Best to wait and see what they will actually stream, vs what they are claiming, before paying anything.

That's why I only signed up for a month. Since they'll be streaming Derby City, we'll know within a week how well they perform. I'll be watching on my desktop monitor while my wife watches Japanese cooking classes on the TV.

Matchroom isn’t streaming Derby, accu-stats and digitalpool are.

PoolActionTV too. They do the action room at Derby.
Poolaction does their own action room, I don’t think it is THE action room. Omega Billiards also streams an action room, and there will be several youtube channels that syndicate the side tables. One of the syndicators will stream tons of matches almost a year afterward, which is pointless.

I will not throw away $70-$80 on the streamer again. Either the bandwidth out of the location is garbage, or the streaming platform. Either way it is not worth $70-$80, and you probably won’t get to see the finals unless you plan on being up until 2 or 3 am Monday morning. The match results and stats may or may not be available during the event. It isn’t a remote spectator friendly event, maybe being there is different.

I did not but with only 65 employees, Stream AMG is not a competitor to my company. I see they use AWS and multiple CDNs to deliver their OTT.
Similar to our delivery yet we have many more solutions. But with that said, Stream AMG should be able to do exactly what I suggested above.

Bummer that there are geo restrictions based rights deals but I am not sure I understand what rights deals are in conflict. Either way I am looking forward to the action and I am sure it will continue to get better.

I thought they were using cloudflare, but I’m not familiar with it. Either way their actual streaming and quality of their sites has always seemed top notch to me.

In sniffing around they use AWS and looks like they are using Akamai, Cloudfront, Fastly and Cloudflare. They were using Edgio (formerly Limelight) but Edgio is going out of business and the other CDNs and in the space are acquiring their assets.

Same here. And I suspect DAZN already knew Matchroom would be making this move when they offered us the annual subscription for $89 last October, a hefty discount off the annual price. Free money for them.
