Hi Guys,

Just wanted to know if Azer are helping players in the local billiard community to improve their games? I've been at pool hall in Queens, Ny for about 2 years and have try when I can to help improve the game of the local players and share with them my knowledge of the games (aiming, etc).

I think it would be a great idea if all of us can do this in our local billiards room to not only help the players but the billiard community. I have seem first hand, how sharing pool knowledge can create new friendship and make your local room a lot more enjoyable and it really help to foster a community of billiard enthusiast. Just thought that if we all can pitch in and help out the next players that our billiard community would grow faster and it would make the game more enjoyable for all of us.

I know that there some room where it's all about actions but it's time to get new blood into the games and hopefully grows this game.

Just a thought.

Duc.

Absolutely! Although far from perfect I feel I have quite a fair share of information that I shouldn't keep to myself. I sometimes joke and say "Those who can't play, teach." I'm short selling myself but most people understand that what I mean is, "Although I may not be perfect, I'm aware of why and can help you discover where you are going astray as well."

Last night my wife and I played in a tournament. We aren't known as strong competitors, we prefer to just have fun and be away from the kids for a while, so we don't take it TOO seriously. We came in 2nd in our division last night and made more money than we paid to be in it in the first place. The best part is that my wife got some help from a local pro on Sunday and was able to work with me really well when I would help her find a pattern on the table.

The point of that short story is this; There is nothing more gratifying than taking someone who knows very little about the true level of skill needed for pool, and molding them into someone who can be very tough competition under high stress. If you aren't helping people in your area, I suggest starting post haste. It's so great to hear people tell you how much they've improved, and to know that you had a hand in that.

Yes I believe I am, I am a solid B to B+ player (whatever that means so im told lol) and I have started a straight pool league in Leisure Time Billiards Levittown NY. Its a great thing because these guys are forced to interact with eachother giving them a new perspective each time they play. If they glean even one piece of info off the other player it is to their benefit. It also exposes them to competition in a more serious manner because there is cash on the line and a great deal of it as first place is well over a thousand dollars. Also if they have a question during a match or during the week prior to league night I am more than happy to help.

I remember showing one of our lower spotted players the infamous straight pool triangle. I sat there for an hour showing him how to recognize key balls and how to get to them. Showing him the right angle to be on the balls. After that hour he would practice it himself until one night at league he was playing someone and did it himself he spotted the triangle and sloppily got there for it. He played the break shot perfectly and got into the next rack. We were all applauding to say the least and in that one moment he felt like johnny archer, john schmidt, and thorsten hohman wrapped up into one. It was extremely gratifying.

I will play most anyone a race to seven for a beer, unless I am not very fond of them. I try to walk some guys through the runout and the how and why's.

no one ever shows me shit

Come on down to NY sometime glad to show you all sorts of shit. Big shit little shit black and brown shit and my personal favorite green shit. We also have a lot of pigeon shit as well. If you go to central park in manhattan with the carriage rides we have horse shit and if you go to the beach we have seagull shit. Go into the woods we have dear shit and of course if you go to many of our parks and ponds we have geese and duck shit as well.

Come on down to NY our shit is more diversified than ever.

Most importantly however we have a lot of bullshit.

Im pretty well known around here for coaching people who play me in league, lol.

I have a hard time getting out, so when i do i want to practice and not really spend time helping someone else.

I spend a lot of my time on league nights helping the lower ranked players. I really enjoy it when I can teach someone something like how to line up a bank shot and they give it a try and it goes in the first try.

IMHO helping people learn the game is one of the most rewarding parts of the game (right next to whipping the snot out of someone with an ego).

I am a rabid mentor, teaching and sharing anything and everything upon request.

I think that's what it means to truely love something.

If your not teaching, mentoring and enthusiastically seeking to share what you know you need to examine whether you love the game, or you just love beating people and the game is just a vehicle to satisfy your need for competition & domination. (or a few bucks, lol) [/candystore psychotheraphy session] lol.

I truely do not understand people that horde knowledge.

I have to share.

People ask me all the time how to improve and the answer is always the same...I tell them about the shot in the Bert Kinister 60 minute workout. the straight in one where you replace the object ball with the cue ball , I tell them to shoot it hundreds of times per day and then show them some simple drills

Also I tell them to stroke through a coke bottle

Ive also heard Donna Mills tell them to use more outside english on cut shots

I have never seen anyone practice anything I have ever tell them........ever

Can't help but laugh out loud. LOL LOL....

Anyway, I know there's a lot of players out there that want to have an edge and they think if they show someone how to fish...there will be no fish left for them to fish but I think the reverse will be true. It's like the internet...when it free they will come and more will be able to enjoy the game. The more people decide to play more consistently to improve their game will help the room..who may then have tournaments for players etc..etc... and I know this as a fact. Now that we have more players coming to the room learning...the owner have decided to bring the predator tour into his room and he hope that it will help his business. All in all, I think it a positive and the ripple effect in the end will benefit us all.

Heck, the people that learned may offer to show a new player or their friends....who then might pick up the game and become a serious players....so more player...may mean more fishes in a bigger pond. When we become self-fish...we're living in a zero sum game with a fixed pond....where there virtually no players. If we have more players and demand for the game...hopefully, it popular enough to bring on board sponsor etch..etc....so show someone something new about the game today that they might not know. I think a forum like this is great to past the positive of the game to everyone in their local community. There's lost of information online that people without internet may not know about. Heck...tons of aiming techniques and e-books offer on here that great for players. I ordered a few ebook for local player and they loved it.

Agreed. Too many in the pool world are full of themselves. I see it all too often. They sit there and mind their own business and pull off some impressive stuff, you walk over to ask them about it and you are shunnnn-na-na-na-na-nnnned. It's terrible. I understand we all wanna win and win money and hustle and this and that, but come on. Helping elevate a D to a C, a C to a B, etc, won't hurt anyone.

I'm getting private instruction from a local player who is damn good. There is nothing I could appreciate more. He hustles (damn well), plays tourneys, won a couple state championships, etc. He's runs me through drills designed for flaw exposure, and then runs me through drills designed for getting rid of those flaws. It's the best thing to happen so far to me when it comes to pool. I think higher level players should really do things like that.

And if you are worried about the baiting people into a hustle, I don't think there's anything to worry about. There are enough "Mr. Me-too's" in any place with a table to walk on. Like gang members. They think hustling drugs on the street is the same as hustling in the pool hall. So they automatically walk in thinking they're hustlers even though they don't know the difference between a 21 and a 17. Let alone probably between the bridge hand and the cue hand.

Anyway... I don't know how to end this post so...

Good post. I'm with you on this.

Although I am a professional instructor and I normally get paid for the lessons I give, that is not always the case. Most of my students are players with some prior measure of knowledge and experience, and they have decided it is time to take their game to "the next level." They come to me fully expecting to pay for what I can provide them. But sometimes I see new players who have gotten involved in leagues or tournament play and they are struggling badly. For those players I will often introduce myself and offer to give them some pointers free of charge, if that is acceptable to them (some people don't want help, even when it's free). I feel it is necessary to do this in order to help them enjoy the game more and hopefully keep them involved. In the long run, it helps all of us.

yup, I'm an 'instructor' at the local pool hall (got a business card and everything haha) even though I'm B-level at best and nobody actually takes paid lessons from me. But I give tons of free lessons and am very generous with advice (though sometimes it sounds less like advice and more like: "what the f@ck were you doing? You're supposed to cut that ball. Why would you bank it? What did I say about banks? I'm going to slap you!").

I've seen a lot of players get better from our sessions and it's really gratifying.

Nope. I play at home and I dont like most people. (including most of the guys I shoot with).

But if I like them and I think I can help then I do

From someone who appreciates any advice, especially from skilled players....thanks for your help! One of things I really love (after I learned to get over myself and not feel offended) about our local pool hall is the people who do that very thing :-).
