I mentioned in prior post that my 19 year old son is finally playing pool finally. Oh, last year of HS he began to play more in the basement as his buddies seemed to want to play. It was a nice break from their video game marathons.

Many of his friends in college liked to shoot, just bangers, but they had fun. When he got home he wanted to play pool all summer. We played 3 or 4 nights a week. I gave him my OB sneaky pete to take back to school to shoot with. Now he needs a break cue. Driving down tomorrow to bring his bicycle and a break cue.

Well, he played in his first ever pool tournament today. The school had a $5 8ball tourney, race to 3. He went 2-2. Some of the kids on the billiard club team asked him to play on the team. He's thinking about it. He's still very low caliber but he can make some very good shots, but misses the easy ones. We all remember those days :)

And the team is now part of a newly formed college billiards league with several other universities. One of the teams in the new league is Lindenwood. Purdue is the other, and U of Illinois, where my son attends. I think there are a couple more schools, but can't remember them.

Just strange how things work out. He's not interested in pool as he played other sports all his life, now he's playing pool in college tourney's and may join the team. He already shoots on the Trap and Skeet team, and seems like these "shooters" like to shoot pool too ? Who knew ?

I caught my real estate agent playing 8ball on an APP on his phone. This guys does not even shoot pool, but he swears it's a blast, and he plays against folks around the world. Eventually, some of these folks will actually come to a pool hall. Maybe there is hope yet for this crazy game of ours.

I think Indiana is involved in this new college billiard league also. Its sounds pretty cool. I wish such a thing existed when I went there.

Honestly I thought the team and pool club at Indiana that we started back in 05 at IU would die after our younger friends graduated, but much to my amazement it has been going for over 10 years now. I'm very proud of that and of the guys who have kept it going.

Yep, I remember the days of missing easy shots. Like it was yesterday. Wait, it was yesterday...

If you are looking for a nice mid range break cue to use for him, I just picked up a Players PureX 4-piece one and I really like it. Just got it a few days ago and it has a good break feel and jumps really well for a break/jump combo. I was able to clear a full ball from just a few inches away from it. And it looks pretty nice also.

That 8 ball pool game is very popular and is pretty good. I just really wish I could play some of the people on a real table where you can't cut a ball at a crazy angle and don't have a perfect straight stroke every time.

If I'm not mistaken I believe April Larson just started at Lindenwood this upcoming semester. Wonder if she will be playing in the league.

I could be wrong but I think Mark Wilson was affiliated with the Lindenwood pool team at one time. My Mom is in a nursing home across the street from there.

Sounds like a good way for college kids to relieve the pressure of school although between work and studying I had no time for anything else during my brief college days.

alstl...Well, the thread title is certainly appropriate here! I can't believe you don't know this ...Not only was he the founder of the Lindenwood University program, but Mark STILL runs the program...the only one of its kind in the USA, and probably the world. He is also instrumental in the development of this intercollegiate team program, to get it off the ground!

I would guess that is why she went there, I think they are one of maybe 2-3 schools that offer scholarship money for pool.

Lindenwood is the ONLY university offering academic scholarships for pool, including full ride scholarships. Winners of BEF National tournaments get small scholarships that can be applied to any college.

Yup, he runs the pool team at Lindenwood. I was down there a year ago. Nice set up. They have 4 table "pool room" on campus for the team. With plenty of space for others to watch and room to move around.

I gave him my OB Sneaky Pete. I've got 3 other cues. He was looking around for a cue. I said you can spend your money or take this one. He took the OB ;) He's not using English yet. Just told him to stay center of the ball for now, get the right angles and learn how to use stop, draw and follow to get you where you need. I want to ensure his mechanics are tight before we start getting too advanced. It's coming along pretty good.

We'll move to English and other stuff next summer.
