“101 Tips to Improve Your Game” by George Fels

Haven’t seen this mentioned on AZB for a few years so I thought it might be helpful to post it for newer members and anyone who missed it or would like a refresher viewing.

Twenty-five years ago, George Fels’ great above-named article appeared in Billiards Digest magazine. It runs 4 pages and you may enjoy reading the thoughts of a skilled and articulate billiards writer who was, not least, also a superlative non-pro Straight Pool player who routinely ran 80s, 90s and often 100s (seven sequential racks, plus).

A number of these gems will be stimulating no matter what your favorite pool game is, even to top-level players. To download, read and print out a 4-page pdf of the article just click on this link:

The pdf contains all the original 101 short paragraphs of George’s wisdom gleaned from his lifetime of playing and meticulously observing the game, and his intelligent distilling of what works. I encourage improvement-minded players to print out the pages in order to review them more carefully for present and future use.

(Btw, tip # 41 should be read as “Inside” english. Likely a typo that wasn’t caught in the 1991 original article.)

As far as tip #34 goes, based on some experiments I did for some tables and some angles and some speeds, side spin transferred to the object ball can make the pocket about 20% larger. This is sometimes called "get-in english."

Grady always did say, sometimes, that the astute One Pocket player should put a little 'outside' on whitey to help those short banks go in easier.

In my signature every post I make:grin-square: I'm the one who put it on Mediafire.

I'm proud to say I'd played George a number of times at a handicapped 14.1 league at RedShoes in Chicago.

He was very intimidating and clearly a fierce competitor, he really took charge.

When I played him I think he was playing for love of the game and didn't hesitate to share little tibits on the fine points whenever we played. Always the teacher.

He was deliberate with his shots, which was great to see what he was planning and where he was hitting the cue ball, very focused on getting just the right shape, which he usually did.

It's a highlight of my experience playing pool to say I've played George. Consider his words carefully, he's the real thing with the skills and experience to back it up.

As a person, I really loved the way he phrased things, just a pleasure to talk with.

A great player, writer and person.

I ran into george at the Chicago billiard cafe
we became fast friends and talked several times over the years

he wrote another book on pool that i think was one of the only 2
that i ever read with profit

Ray Martins 99 Critical shots was the other, and probably the better
but if you have not read george fels ,you should

it is practical and profitable

I really wish I could have got to meet him. We corresponded through AZ many times.
He sent me a copy of Mastering Pool as soon as it was ready to hit the stores and it's been the book I've recommended and loaned out time and time again. There were many things in the book that at that time a lot of people who had been playing for many years didn't know.

Thanks for posting these. I had never seen them before, and they are really helpful for the new, inexperienced player I am lol. I found tip 1-101 most helpful!

Clearly reinforces the logic of re-presenting George's unique article every few years for the real benefit of a wide viewership -- improvement-minded players of every level of skill and amount of experience.

George's eloquent, truly artistic writing magically and economically does what all great art does -- whether literary or visual -- it simultaneously evokes both reminiscence and discovery.
