Asian buy out is good for pool.

Here are some talking points for the IPT situation.

1. Pool is not an "American" sport. It will have a greater chance of survival in Asia.

2. Ho has more money than KT. The more money the owner has the more likely it will survive.

3. The Asian market is more receptive to pool. Taiwan, phillipines and vietnam back pool more than the U.S. would.

4. Bigger market means more advertising dollars which is good for pool.

5. Asians will watch a sport that they dominate, which translates into more advertising revenue. Again more money means a healthier tour.

I think this is great for pool. As a sidebar, I am sure the founders of the u.s. open are great people but their event and other American events like it are a joke when you compare them to other sporting events. Hopefully Mr. Ho can elevate our sport. I wish him all the luck. For all the whiners out there who think the IPT is unfairly killing U.S. tourneys read "The Origin of Species" by Charles Darwin.

If it then becomes an Asian tournament with most, or all, of the tournaments overseas will the Americans travel there? Especially those who figure to end in the bottom quarter of the field.

Will it be televised here? Or will we just read about it a couple months after the fact in the Billiards magazines?

Star Sports Network in Asia has nonstop live coverage of the San Miguel tour and the world championships. They will probably have nonstop live coverage of IPT events.

Here we watch matches months later, when we already know the results.

If they can build a live televised tour faster than we can, hats off to them.

I'm pretty sure that the Vegas and Reno events will be mortal lock tournaments that would take place every year.I wouldn't be surprised if they don't add another tourney on the East Coast of the USA.

Other than that it will be great if the game goes global and is spread around to other nations like Britian, Taiwan and hopefully others.

As far as live TV in the USA, that remains to be seen, however, is unlikely given the competition of the great other sports currently being shown. For the hard core pool fan, one can allways sign up to view live pool at the IPT website. All in all things are looking up for the game of pool.

Notice ...

that on the main page of the IPT website, just below Natural Cures, that they mention:

Vonage
Ho Casinos
Emerson

Macua

for those that don't know where Stanley Ho's Casinos are, most are in Macua
(see Map). Would anyone want to speculate where future IPT events might
be held?

Manila, Taipei, and HongKong would be a lock. And I'm sure Reno and Las
Vegas would be too. Hope that a couple of the European cities will be
included too, plus another one in the East Coast.

I look at some of the obvious statements above................ I have a problem with two of your 'opinions'

#1 Pool is not an American Sport ..................

" since the media here in US has always portrayed the game as negative and brainwashed our parents who worked so hard after and during WWII when leisure time was looked down upon and hard work was looked up to, there is no reason to trash all the time/effort and skill the players like Greenleaf, Ponzi, Mosconi, Hoppe, Crane, and that group...... who set the standard of our sport"

#2 I am sure the founders of the u.s. open are great people but their event and other American events like it are a joke when you compare them to other sporting events.

What a shallow statement, this has been one of the greatest platforms to send our guys out in the world to compete with others, all your statement shows is your lack of knowlege/respect for the past and the passion those before you have given to create competition here in the US.

I think this deal, whatever the real details of it are is good for pool IF it guarantees the life of the IPT until it can become self sufficient. You can't deny that the IPT to date have in the whole been FANTASTIC for pool and the players. Nobody has invested so much or produced the quality of events/coverage that the IPT has. My own concern which has been stated time and again is that they need to shift their focus away from the qualifers in the long term, pool players are never going to support a tour of this size like poker does. If they don't realise this soon the tour won't be sustainable and prize money will be cut. I suspect that this may be inevitable but the good news is that the stucture (web and TV coverage, event model, qualifiers, etc) is in place and it will still be a huge improvement on what we had before.

I've known of mr Ho for sometime, he's been mentioend in various TIME magazine articles in connection with his plans for Maccau and making it the Asian Vegas. My opinion on him is the same as it is of KT. I am not concerned how they made their fortune, I'll leave that to the FBI or whoever. If they are happy for them to continue in business (and they know a lot more about them than any of us ever will) then we shouldn't be concerned (sorry BJ). The truth is, you could probably dig up dirt on the powerful men that are behind most sports, many of the current English Football Clubs are being bought up by shady rich men whom we no little about. If they are interested in pool and are willing to invest to make it better then great!

FYI here's the Wikipedia entry for Dr. Stanley Ho:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Ho

There's a section titled "Triads and Ho" in there. From what that says, he's had conflicts with them, not so much dealings with them. But, who knows?

Ho knows.

:D

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I think KT has always planned on heavy expansion toward Asia, and the IPT has been staging the first few tournaments in the US only because this is the place where KT has the most contacts, experience, production capability, etc.

Look at the current schedule along with the preliminary '07 and '08 schedules from the IPT website:
2006 - NA Open, World Open, Master's, Player's (cancelled), and KOTH.
2007 - The same as 2006 plus the Canadian Open, UK Open, European Open, Asian Open, and Australian Open. (The North American Open becomes the US Open.)
2008 - The same as 2007 plus the Japan Open, Taiwan Open, Korean Open, and South American Open.

My guess is the some of the new Asian tournaments on the 2008 schedule will get moved to 2007 with the UK and European dates moving to 2008. One thing Ho brings to the table is the contacts necessary to stage the Asian events.

The one bad thing about all of this, from an American's perspective at least, is that we may only see one tournament on US soil on '07 and '08 since the World Open, Player's, Master's, and KOTH do not need to be based in the US.

Randy Lerner just bought Aston Villa. He's a badboy - word on the street is he used to pass notes during class at Columbia. :D

And maybe Abromovich will take a shine to young Stalev and dump a few million into pool. He probably spends more on velvet toilet paper.
