Ask Danny Basavich

Williebemore,

The best player I ever played against is Mark Pantovic from Manhatten. Gypsy is his nickname. I have never beat him in my life. I'm 0 and
10.

My favorite game is 9 ball. I believe there's way more skill in 9 ball
than in one pocket. By the time I was 18 I was beating all the top one pocket
players in the world. And now I 'm 26 and I 'm still having trouble beating
the top 9 ball players in the world. There's way more luck in one pocket than 9 ball.

Kid D

Danny,
You never beat Gyp-rock? No way.. I cannot believe that.. thats to funny.. congrats on your success and keep it going.

Hi danny it's me again Muxy, hopefully i can ask you one more question!

I am 16 and started playing pool when i was 15, i jumped right into playing the best in my town, Jeff Kenedy / Craig Cochrane to name a few, and at first it discougered me to play but after awhile my confidence grew and I still lose but i dont mind it as much.

I was wondering what is the best advice to give me at this time, and not to quit school! ( i read your article its awesome).

I will be at the Joss Tour Finale, and i will hopefully have the nuts to come up to you and say Hi.

First tip is to get rid of that McDermott.

I think this thread is a GREAT idea, having questions answers by a pro like Danny.

As a certified court reporter and verbatim transcriptionist, I've gotta say I am quite impressed with the verbatim transcription of the Kid's replies. I think this is a great way for fans, pool enthusiasts, players, and railbirds to get to know the various players.

Bravo to AzHousePro for thinking of it! I hope this is the first of many more to come. :)

Hey Kid, you mentioned doing mental exercises. What are some of the mental exercises you do to keep you in a match when you're feeling fatigued, sick bored etc...? Seems I'm struggling to keep my mind from wandering and would love some pointers/tips on what you do. Thanks. Mscue

Hey Danny, a lot of people were talking that you and Tony Watson might match-up . Also, what do you think of Chohans' challenge?

Good luck in the tourney and maybe I'll see you next time your in Cal. (I'm friends with your buddy Alex from No. Cal.)

danny, what do u think is the thing(s) that u feel u have done to make ur game jump so much. and what type of things do you do to keep ur level of play so high up there?? thanks david..

ChuckPorter,

There's only about 12 shots in 9 ball, and me practicing them every day for an hour a day has improved my game tremendously. Rack up 9 bal, break and take ball in hand and every time you miss a shot, shoot that
shot 10 times even if its the easiest shot.

Kid D

Thanks for the reply Danny and best of luck to you in Pittsburgh. I was finally was able to read the whole SI article and you Sir have my utmost respect.

Keep up the great work.

You have to be kidding. "More skill in 9 ball ... more luck in 1-pocket." I guess you are entitled to your opinion but I have always likened 9 ball to checkers and 1-pocket to chess. There are probably some people that believe checkers takes more skill and chess has more luck. You were beating Efren, Parica, Joyner, Daulton, Allen etc when you were 18???

Danny, there's a young lady in my neck of the woods that you met last year in Rockville. Every time we run into her, she ALWAYS asks about any Kid Delicious stories. You made a good impression on her, and she still loves talking about the day you showed her how to change her stance at the table. She's your number-one D.C. fan, besides JAM, of course! :p

At any rate, she wanted me to ask you if you were coming to the $2,500-added Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour this weekend, February 26-27, at Bill and Billie's in Arnold, Maryland. She will be there for sure! Here's the link for the PP 9-Ball Tour for more info: http://planet-pool.com :D

I was checking out your ad on the AzBilliards Home Page, and I found the link to your Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich website.

First and foremost, I've got to commend you for creating it. As we all know, the Internet is the BEST communication medium. I would like to see some more pictures of you on that website, Danny, and maybe some road stories or a few tales. Definitely MORE PICTURES!

I like the section on your most recent tournament wins. 2004 was sure a good year for you! In addition, I think a brief bio would complement the other items on the website, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, for fans like the young lady mentioned above, your upcoming schedule on the tournament trail would be nice! :p

Hope to see you at Valley Forge! About that 50K and 12 ahead, my people will get together with your people next week and maybe we can do Chinese! :D

Here's my favorite picture of you and Keith, as he's gazing in the window, watching you count your dough! (LOL)

JAM, that is toooo good.

Hey Danny,

we miss you in Rochester. Hope to see you back again. About two years ago you showed me a shot that at one time was difficult for me. With the 9 ball on the bottom rail and getting position with an awkward cue ball and eight ball in the kitchen as illustrated below. This is now cakewalk. I almost never miss position and almost 100% make the shot. Thanks so much.

My drwaing does not give very good credit for the shot. Here it is. From the cue ball position you would think it impossible to even hit the top rail.

i know you're hitting that shot with alot of right hand spin, but is it being hit high or low on the cue?

Its a great shot. When you shoot this shot you must use alot of middle-high left english. The stroke you use is almost a swing stroke. Not traditional at all. If you have not made the shot before it is almost good to see someone else do it forst. Very cool, amazing how the cue ball moves. You would not believe the cue ball path unless you have seen someone do it.

TannerPruess, My favorite pratice drill is on my Delicious DVD #1. This DVD
shows the 12 shots that are in 9 ball, if you get these 12 shots up to 90% or
better you're one of the best top players in the world. Let me know how it
goes if you buy the DVD.

Hi Joe,
I was really good friends with George. You don't know how much it hurt
me when he passed. He taught me a lot about life and pool. He was one of the most loved pool players in NJ. He will be greatly missed. I'll be in Valley
Forge in mid-March. Stop by and lets chat about George.

Whats up Muxy,
You owe me one for asking another question. I'll be looking for you.
Jeff Kennedy and Craig Cochrane are both great players. I believe I've
played Jeff in a tourney once. Tell Jeff Kid D says hello, the last time I
saw him he was beating up on Shorty in Portland. When you don't mind it as
much it means your becoming a better player. I guarantee it! Keep on playing
with those guys, in time you will start to beat them. Don't give up, here is
a Delicious secret. I don't tell this to many people. In life, when you
think you are 90% of the way through your journey, you are really only 50%
of the way through. You have to deal with the punishment to get to the top.
I used to play Neptune Joe Frady from NJ when I was 16 for $30 a set every
Thursday. For the first year he tortured me. In races to 11 I never won more
than 2 games. As far as education goes, it is necessary and there is no
guarantee with life or pool. You need to have something to fall back on just
in case. Thats why school is very important.

Hi Jam,
How are you and the earthquake shakin'. How is his BR going? Diana and I
are at the Hilton event in Pittsburgh. We have been answering questions late
at night after she gets done sending her pics. I've really enjoyed
interacting with all the fans. I owe them greatly for being there for me.
I'm blessed to have such great people believing in me. I look forward to
Valley Forge and getting some action. If anybody wants to play a set of
9-ball even for $50,000 at Valley Forge (12 ahead match), I will be
available to play. For more info call (603) 747-3187, ask for Pittsburgh
Tom.

Hi Mscue,
Have you miscued lately? If you are in a match and you feel fatigued or
things are going really badly, you should go to the bathroom and wash your
face and hands really good. Take a nice long 5 minute break, if you are able
to go outside after the bathroom and get some fresh air then do it. Here is
a Delicious secret: when you get to your match walk straight to your table,
don't talk or look at anybody especially your opponent in the eyes. This is
similar to blinders on a race horse. Another Delicious secret to getting in
the zone is breathing in, for the same amount of time that you breath out.
This is a technique used by Zen Masters. This is a low cal Delicious secret,
drink a lot of water during tournaments to cool off and to stay hydrated and
fresh.

Hi Dave,Thank you for your support. Aiming in the center of the cue ball
helps me line up the center of the object ball which is the exact same
system as efren reyes except he does it at the bottom of the cue ball.

Kid D

Thanks Danny. I just got word that I am going to be able to make the trek up to Portland ME. for the finale so hopefully I'll get a repeat performance from Quincy of you and Keith. That was one of my favorite matches to date.
