With the demise of Broadway Billiards, SoHo Billiards has become haven to the B'way orphans. George (Parica) has started organizing weekly 9-ball tournaments on Tuesdays, and I'm trying to spread the word so that people start showing up.

There is free practice at 7:00pm.
$35 entry fee (green fees included).
B-C-D players only.
Double elimination format. This past Tuesday was a race to 7 (DE), but it may be changed to a race to 5 depending if more people show up.

Come and play!

I will gladly spread the word if you open the field. Otherwise, I really don't care. No offense.

Is there really going to be free practice (go back and look at what happened when they hosted the Predator Tour) and what time does the tourney actually start?

Again, why the limit to BCD players?

Yeah, it would have been fun to return to our old hood. Seems like field limits are becoming rather popular in NYC area lately. It's very frustrating, especially when it's in a Manhattan poolroom.

If you can't anything nice. Johnnyt

Yes, perhaps a little harsh but it's still frustrating nonetheless. I cannot tell you how many times I receive notice about some tournament (not including the Tri-State Tour) that refuse to allow ALL amateurs or ALL players. Not including Opens and As eliminates a huge chunk of players in NYC that already have few local venues to choose from.

Not sure why George wanted to make it B/C/D tournament only.

Jude, Chris, you may want to talk to George or the people at SoHo to ask them about opening it up. I think that they'll take it into consideration if they realize it will get more entries and money.

I'm not in charge of the tournaments in any way, so no offense taken.

As of now, it's similar to the tri-state handicapping system. That is to say for every skill level difference, it's a ball difference. The difference in skill level takes into account the difference between a C and a C+, in case you're wondering.

So for example, if a C+ plays a B (one skill level difference), the C+ gets the 8-ball. If a C plays a B, the C gets the 7. If a D+ plays a B, the D+ gets the 6... and so on.

So, if a D plays a B, D player's handicap ball is the 6, not 6,7 & 8 right?

What are the prizes and expected payout?

Just a thought, Skyline Billiards in Brooklyn has their Tues nite Open tourney, entry varies by skill level, but the matches are even races. Starts around 8P. Why don't more ppl support that one? Nice room, the equipment is in great shape, the owners are good guys...

Yes, I've been to Skyline a couple times now. I like the room and think Rob does a fine job running the place. The equipment is excellent and the layout is very player-friendly. However, it's just not that close by. If they had a weekly Saturday tournament, I'd be far more tempted to go. You're right. It's right near the F train (which happens to be my train). However, on a Tuesday night, I HAVE TO be home by midnight if I want to keep my job. An 8pm start-time simply leaves no wiggle room. The field would have to be 16 or less and the matches would have run quickly.

Jude, in that case, you (like I) can't hit any Sun-Thurs tourneys, so it's a moot point

7:30p@Soho would probably be early enough for someone like me. The cab ride home is five minutes. Catching a cab from that place takes seconds and it's only a mile away from the Brooklyn Bridge.

From what I understand, the reason some rooms run B and below events because the experience has been that when the same couple of "open" players win every week the event dies out.

That's one rationale for it anyway.

HardTimes in SoCal handles this by running a 9 ball tournament every Sunday with one a month (on the first Sunday) being "open" and the other 3 weeks B and under. I would imagine there are other rooms that have a similar solution.
