AUGUST 29 - SEPTEMBER 1, 2024TURNING STONE CLASSIC XXXIX 9-BALL OPENTURNING STONE RESORT CASINO

Usually, I am at Turning Stone and there is some sort of real time scoring going on.

I won't be there this time though. Watch for bracket updates after each round, but it won't be live this time.

Mike

Here is the player I drew 1st round. Ranked #77 in the world. FARGORATE 790
I had never heard of him before.

The set we played wasn't real straightforward. Lots of misses that left me no shot. Lots of returning decent safeties where he got me safe back. The first rack I had 6 or 7 trips to the table, never once with a shot. On 4 offensive starts I had tough shots I went for I made 2 of them and got a rack once. He outright missed 5 shots and made several positional errors. Was a very strange set, but I knew I had to keep him from just running out on me. I know his game is alot stronger than he showed me. He is the 3rd highest ranked player there.

8/22/24 US Open writeup
Let’s talk about a player that no one in Matchroom (or many people in general) is paying attention to.

Michael Baoanan is the surprising unseeded player that has quietly made his way to the last 16. He is unseeded but in no way inexperienced. He has not been featured in any TV table and even the commentators are pronouncing his name wrong. Just to clarify, his last name is pronounced Ba-wa-nan.

This newly installed Marboys player is a newbie in the US pool scene. He attended the Raxx Open but was not able to enter the last 16 as he was eliminated by Patric Gonzales in the loser’s qualification side. But before coming to the US, he has compiled some strong wins late last year and this year. He was runner up in the Manny Pacquaio 10 ball Open last December where all the top Filipino pros played. He also was champion in a 10 ball open in Indonesia earlier this year.

On his way to the last 16, he had quality wins over Mario He(9-6) in the 2nd round and Francesco Candela(9-4) to qualify for the knockout stage. In the last 64, he was matched up against Ralf Souquet and won 10-8. He had to face another solid veteran in the last 32 in the person of Lee Vann Corteza and he won this match 10-7.

This silent and unassuming player has suddenly found his way in the last 16. He has bested other high ranked Filipino compatriots and is only one of the three Pinoys left in the field. He will be up against David Alcaide in the last 16 later today. If no one is paying attention before, they will surely be watching and talking about him now. The Dark Phoenix is now looking more like The Dark Horse of the competition.

Might as well write that first place check out to Shaw now. I'm thinking it's even money he doesn't drop a match and goes undefeated.

Wasn't Shaw part of that group of players who put out that statement about not playing in WPA sanctioned tournaments going forward?

Is Turning Stone sanctioned?

I assume there’s only two ways to get on the WPA calendar.

One is to have your event sanctioned.

Two is to start a rebellion against the WPA until public pressure pushes the WPA into putting out a press release that lists your event as being “treated as sanctioned” as a peace offering that gains no traction.

I just got off the phone with Mike Zuglan. He said he doesn't even know who the WPA is and had definitely not sanctioned this event with them.

What we are guessing happened, is that the BCA has always included this event on their points list so the WPA must be considering it a WPA event because of that. Mike said he will talk to the players at this event and make sure that they understand the event has nothing to do with the WPA.

They are coming to Texas. Turningstone is made up of 550 Fargo rated players.
Sossei and Fracasso-Verner are not going to Texas. They are playing at Turning Stone right now, alongside about 20 700+ Fargo players.

Dechaine went to Texas.

And now we know a third way to get on the calendar. Grandfather in from a points system nobody pays attention to but can get Hunter Lombardo to the World Games and WCBS Championships.

TS has really dropped down the pecking order. Watched a lil of the stream and it looks like just a local/regional deal now. Few good players but not like it used to be. TexasOpen is getting all the big dogs now.

There are 3 guys over 800
I gotta beat 3 guys 700 to 711 tomorrow to get cash.
You should come rob it.

This is a big regional tournament...one any corner of the country would love to have. He runs this tournament with military precision....40th event in January.
Missing some regular top talent, but there are 30 plus solid shortstops, 20 plus low level pros and 5 or so killers...

Yup said the same to me.

There are a bunch of locals that I play with at various events in the area that are (were) playing in this. None are playing any longer. In past years, it has been similar outcomes. Many are people that play in a few or many of the stops on the Joss tour, and this is part of that tour.
I know that I've seen Upstate Al's stream and it had a match or two that looked more like league play than a high level tournament, but these were people that decided to see for themselves what the next level is like. They have my respect for stepping up. One day I'll play too, and I'm already accepting that the easy shots I miss, and the bad decisions I make, will make me look bad, but I'll learn from it.

Looks like Shaw is out?
I’ve played and watched a hell of a lot of pool. I’ve played in beer joints, pool rooms, college student union rooms, and so on and so on. there is such a distinction from the road players of the 60’s and 70’s and today’s professional. Road players had charisma and personality as well as catchy nicknames. Todays players that you see in pro tournaments are rather blase and Shaw is a prime example. For whatever reason he is about the most expressionless player I’ve ever watched. You can say what you will about Earl but he brought people to the sport with a solid game along with his fits and antics. Pool needs more Earl’s.
