AZ Buildoff Cues

So here's my review. Of course everybody's opinion will/shall differ somewhat. From cues 1-7

Crafsmanship- 9, 8, 6, 7, 9, 9, 8,
Fit and Finish- 8, 8, 5, 6, 9, 9, 8
Wrap- 9, 6, - 7, - - -
Joint- 8, 8, 4, 8, 9, 9, 7
Balance- 8, 7, 6, 7, 8, 8, 4
Feel- 8, 8, 5, 7, 8, 7, 5
Feedback- 7, 8, 7, 7, 7, 7, 5

Stifness- 8, 8, 7, 6, 9, 8, 8
Sound of Hit- 2, 3, 5, 3, 2, 2, 1

Overall Rating- 8, 7.8, 5.5, 7, 8.3, 8.1, 6.1

All the cues payed at a respectable level, some more than others.
All seemed pretty much within the norm but only a few things stood out to me and can be construed many different ways. Please do not think of these as good or bad necessarily, just a few things I noticed.

I did a quick roll of the cues. This won't tell much as it's not as if the cue went from one place to another. They traveled all around the U.S. and one would expect movement. I wouldn't think it much fair to make a judgment as far as straightness because if I buy a cue it only travels once and from one condition to another, not to many different conditions. By this I mean weather conditions. All seemed reasonably straight when sighted down.

Cue number 5 Shaft taper may have been too stiff for me. I like a pretty stiff shaft but this is prob the stiffest I played with ever. I liked it but it would take a while for me to get used to fully just like any other cue.

Cue number 3, took the first couple of shots and heard and felt vibration. Checked to see if shaft was tight, joint pin maybe loose, figured out when I removed the bumper there was a little brass washer. Couldn't weight that much at all so if it was to bring weight closer it was a poor choice. It was loose and what made me look to begin with. Also this cue had the worst finish. Not that it wasn't a decent finish, but it obviously did not hold up well to the conditions all the cues were exposed to.

I liked cues 5 and 6 the best out of the bunch with number 1 in close contention. I am a fan of either wrapless, or leather only. Didn't like the linen wrapped cues feel.

The sneaky, well wasn't a fan. It didn't hit stiff necessarily, yet it was very loud and hit hard. I was not a fan, but to each his own.

If, in the future, I were to order from any of these makers, I think I would be most happy with 5 and 6 (tie) with 1 following close behind.
Good job cue makers! And a huge, I mean HUGE thanks to Shawn for making this work like butter :) Thank you for letting me be a part of this.

Thanks Rob.....now I have to compile all this info to let everyone know the outcome.

Shawn, thanks again for the opportunity to be able to test these out. :) I hope everybody enjoyed this wonderful opportunity as much as I have.

I had the opportunity to hit with all of them but it was a while back. As soon as I saw the pictures here I remembered that my favorite was number five.

I was impressed with the construction of all of them but the one that impressed me the most was number 5. That one I could play with. Sorry I can't say much about the others because it's been quite a few months since I tried them out.

Gracio Review?

Thanks for all the work that went into this! I maybe wrong but is cue number one by Gracio the same person that received all of the cues for evaluation? Also, what was the purpose of having a # five cue in there if we do not know the name of the builder. Thanks again to everyone that submitted reviews.

To answer your question, Yes, same "Gracio". The cues came to an AZ member that ended up not having the time to deal with them so I got stuck doing all of the footwork. The reviews were left with him to send off, upload, or whatever he was supposed to do with them.

Several people here reviewed the cues and I see no mention of their evaluations either. I'm not sure why the reviews were not posted.

To the participants of the build off.thanks for letting this happen.

Special thanks goes to Shawn for doing this.the sneaky i sent was to be used as a filler
in the event Shawn had trouble with the builders.sure enough he had plenty of trouble.Shawn
got torched in the process.

The sneaky is now home and i got to look it over.it will be in action tonight just like i recieved
it,just add chalk.from the looks of the cue,it hit a lot of balls.

the shaft:

straight and true - no dings in the stroking area
tip and ferrul - still jam up
joint area paint got rail scraped a few times.not to bad, have seen a lot worse.
shaft joint - like new

the butt:

joint pin - like new - works as designed
joint paint area - rail scraped like the shaft
overall finish - did well on dings and scrapes
straightness - lower third of butt warped .022 - when,how and conditions,unknown
butts dont usually move in the big end.maybe being built on the atlantic
coast during the fall, then doing the next 12 months in oaklahoma and calif
got it.then throw in a few plane rides over some mountains.bingo bendo!

Thanks Bill for stepping up to the plate when 2 other cuemakers dropped the ball on me and alot of other people. Your cue to me, is top notch!! I had the opportunity to play with this cue for about 4-5 months before all the cues arrived to me. I really enjoyed the cue. I am an extremely picky person and if I were ordering a cue from you, I would personally have a brass pin installed, but thats just picky ole me

Bill is a top notch guy and you wont find any better! I would not hesitate to tell anyone to contact him for a cue. Very resonable prices and a good quality cue.

On the butt bendy part.....I think it was a combination of shipping to different climates, drastic temperature changes...I think all of this had an effect on the cue. But rest assured, if you order from Bill, you will not have this problem I am sure.

All of the cuemakers involved are top notch, I would not hesitate to order a cue from any of them! Some cuemakers will give you unreasonable timeframes on making a cue, these guys involved will tell you exactly how it is, and deliver!

Shawn

sorry you cant get a metal pin from me.metal does not bond to wood.
threaded weight bolt only is metal.i don't do the old turn of the century metal pin thing.
