AZB King!

gpeezy

for sale!
I started a thread asking about maybe having a AZB tournament and JOEY brought up have a King of the Hill type AZ players challenge.

We could do it to where you have to have say 300 posts.
A short race. Say maybe 7 or 9.
A small wager would be set. Friendly Fifty was suggested.
You have to post at least 24 hours, I say 48 hours before play so the board can be involved.
I think it should be a nominated player set up. Maybe do it by region/area so that travel won't be an issue.

What do you guys think?

I'm thinkin I live in a tough region!

Could start goin by state.

I am in Seattle if anyone is around here... I suck though... but I will play anyone in the area...

Can I wait till Easy E moves to San Diego before I start? :-)

I thinks this is a pretty good idea.............

What about weight??

Hell,I'm game but many on this board would blister me playing even I'm sure.

I like the idea of a club ladder system. Over time this would create rankings for everyone who wanted to take part (in a similar fashion to the annual holiday Q-Skills challenge) and help resolve the eternal posturing of *some* of our members ;-)

We did this for a while back on dear old RSB. The inestimable Mr. Jewett was master of the list and very nearly fell victim to my mad skilz in Vegas one year and was only saved from ingnomy by me scratching like a first-rate chump at hill-hill.

I think having an AZBilliards King by state is a good way to start.
We can have a playoff for the AZBilliards King of 2009 or other such challenge.

The board would probably have more fun than the players. I've met a lot of AZBers and I think initially the AZBilliards King should be someone who travels a lot and like what was mentioned in another thread, they should be nominated.

UWATE can't wait to spank me but he's in Florida so I don't know how long it would take for him to cross the Gulf of Mexico but I still have a small boat and could pick him up off the coast of Louisiana. I don't mind giving up a fifty dollar bill for a match with him. He'll probably be all sunburned by the time he gets here and won't be able to make a ball.

There are a few others who would like to sink their hooks into me but I have leather-like skin (Leatherneck) and can take a piercing with the best of them.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I know that everyone doesn't play at the same level but that will be part of the process. If some of the AZBers want to match up after the official AZBilliards King match with a spot then that's ok too. But for the official match I have to think that you have to play even up whatever discipline you agree on.

Do you think that the challenger should have the right to pick any discipline that they want?

challenge

Hey Gpeezy, I'll get the stick out of the mud- I will happily play any AZer in Alabama for the fifty, but other than you, Harold M, Iba, and myself, who is there? Matt p.s.- only have 100+posts, but will still get in the box

Love the idea, but there have to be some constraints on what games are played and who chooses them. There's something appealing about giving the challenger the option of games, but there can be some pretty esoteric and silly games that can come up. I can just imagine someone proposing jacked-up back-pocket 9-ball, with Grady's rules.

Perhaps the holder of AZB King of the Hill title should state three games they are willing to play, and the challenger has his/her pick of what game to duel it out over?

Another option is to do an all-around sort of deal like TAR. Race to 3 in one-pocket, race to 7 in 9-ball, race to 75 in straight pool. First person to win any two sets is the reigning King or Queen.

OK, here's a crazy idea... we all agree to a specific amount, say $50 a match, whatever the match is; race to 9 9ball, race to 3 one pocket, race to 150 14.1, etc.. Then whoever wins has $100. The next match they play, it's their $100 against the next guy's (or gals) $50. Over and over until you have someone from one area travel to another area to play someone there who's won a bunch of matches in their area. Pretty soon you have someone "holding" a bunch of cash and then we have an amount that could sponsor an AZer to play in a big tourney somewhere. Could be the player that has amassed all the "ladder" winnings or someone of their choosing. Kind of like our own qualifier for a big money tourney.

I was gonna try to match up with you eventually anyway. I'm up for whatever. Alabama you could say is in the works.

This is another good point. Some states may have to band together and have an AZ Billiards King for a region when there are simply not enough players to get competitive. There are a lot of lurkers out there so maybe this could encourage them to start posting.

The AZB KING should be able to lose his crown by someone with similar skill but maybe not quite as good. You're right about the choosing of the games. I couldn't see myself wasting time playing one hand jacked up or similar type games. :frown: It should be traditional games: Eight Ball, Nine Ball, One Pocket, Straight Pool and maybe Banks (ugggh). :D I know that the two out of three would be better for the better player but I would like to see the lesser player have a chance to s**t out and win. That way there might be more challenges made. Just thoughts. I'm no all-knowing goon. :)

Let's keep this going and discuss this. Put your thoughts in this thread. I know there is some more brain power out there in AZB Land. This could be a perennial thing that gives AZB a B-12 shot every now and then. I can see some of the people on AZB getting a charge about betting on a match between other members.

I like the idea but it is hard to hold onto winnings and when it comes time to come up with the money to play in the big tournament, there may be no funds left. Hopefully someone can figure out a way to do something like this but where the cash will be held in escrow, maybe in Williebetmore's Basement Vault. :D

When the vault is about to burst at the seams, Willie could allow a withdrawal or pay for the expenses for a tournament. I would think that only the participants could have a chance at being sponsored by the Vault Money.

I was staring into Internet space and a single thought came into my head. Now I can't use it because I remembered what prompted me to use this line. :)

Anyway, we need to make the match affordable for anyone to challenge the AZB King. I think a donation or portion of the bet should go into the coffers for future use but I don't know if it should be the AZB Money King that should get to go to the tournament or the chosen person is done by drawing and they can either go or send someone else in their place.

Thoughts......?

JoeyA it is true I would try you some rotation game pool but in 1p I need weight. I play once a week and just started learning 1p after my first son was born (2000). You and I have played before at the DCC. 10ball is pretty close between us but you know I have no chance playing you one hole. I might as well just take you out for dinner instead, that way I still spend 50 on ya but save myself the torture of being against a stack of balls all night instead of a stack of Louisiana crawfish.

If any Miami AZBers want to play a set of nineball for AZB king of Miami, I am game. TheBigHurt is likely the AZB king of south florida but I wouldnt mind a shot at the Miami title. If that fails I can always try the AZB king of Pinecrest florida. Or maybe th AZB king of SW 96th street. If it comes down to it I might have to settle on being AZB king of my master bathroom. Just try to win there!
