AZB King!

Hey, I Know Which Disciplines I LIKE

Do you think that the challenger should have the right to pick any discipline that they want?

If so, I like to be spanked and then walked on with high heeled stiletto shoes....

MAJOR CLARIFICATION!!!!!!

In Indiana, the King will ALWAYS get to decide the game. There could be nothing more lame than allowing the challenger to set the rules. Otherwise, what would be so great about being the King (steev would likely set some lame-o rule requiring me to drink 3 Bud Lites after every rack.....hmmmm....wait, maybe that wouldn't be so bad)?

As Mel Brooks said, "It's good to be the King." At least it should be.

I am also declaring myself the PAT II King of Indiana (I haven't taken the PAT III yet, so even I'm reluctant to make that declaration).

steev,
Right.

Don't worry, the fridge will be chock full of shiny, frosty Bud Lites. You have as much chance of avoiding that fridge as Gollum had of avoiding that shiny ring.

You wants your precious, you needs your precious. Good luck.

In Illinois, what I decreed is the challenger has the option of choosing the same game, etc, that the current King won his or her match. This would keep a current King from deciding that he or she could technically hold on to the title by doing something silly like only offering to play a race to 100 one pocket for $2.

I am so frickin' benevolent sometimes. :D

I want to declare myself king of the street that I live on in Auburn Al-bring it on-Matt

I think we should do short race all rounds. Race 5 9 ball, Race to 3 one pocket, and race to 4 8 ball. 9 ft tables would be best of course.
Agree say I. If so we leave it at this with no King game changes or challenger.

I like those respective "short" races because it will give the lesser player a chance to win.

Besides Williebetmore who is always searching for an edge, ;) is there anyone else who objects to the short races in the three disciplines?

This could be a standard and everyone would know which games and how many they are racing to.

If you have an objection please, by all means, state it and describe why you object to it and what and why you think the race and game should be(That oughta open up the thread for the comedians).

Dudes,
I do like the idea of standard games, but surely on a forum such as this there are at least a few people who enjoy playing pool. The races definitely need to be a bit longer; or we might as well have coin-flipping Kings. Don't we like to play pool??????

Short race rotation games are a poor way to choose a King. If money is involved, they are an even poorer choice. Yes, they give the weaker player a little more of a shot; BUT don't we really want the title of "AZB King" to mean something. The bangers have the APA and handicapped leagues; perhaps AZB could actually reward the more skillful players with a real contest instead of a coin flip. The weaker players could always practice a bit and try again (novel concept).

How about race to 10 in 9-ball, 10-ball, and 8-ball (the IPT standard)?

How about race to 5 (or 7) in one pocket?

How about race to 150 in straight pool (traditional)?

Anything less than this and many people will not want to put up cash. Participation is bound to be better with the longer races and defined races. I like it (though steev and I will play a longer match, because we LIKE TO PLAY POOL).

P.S. - if no cash is involved, then race to 1 in 2-ball will be fine with me.

SEE? That's what I'm talking about Willie, always trying to get an edge.

If the truth be known, I would prefer longer races myself. The only thing I fear is that if the lesser players don't have a chance to win they probably won't risk putting up the money to challenge the KING. I guess there are two schools of thought and I see Willie's point. If I'm going to play someone for money (and I think there should be a stake of cash in the title) I would like a little play for my money and longer races are more to my personal desires for just the reasons Willie mentioned. I just figured that the lesser players might not want to challenge unless they had a short race.

If I am the lesser player and I'm going to put up fifty bucks I would like to at least have a chance to hit some balls. After all, I don't think Willie can run 9 racks of ten ball on me.

Joey,
I see your point; but perhaps our area is different than yours. In my area the lesser player almost NEVER puts up cash without a significant handicap (unless it is to donate in a tournament). Since we are doing this un-handicapped in a one-on-one fashion, I really think it is going to be limited to fairly decent players anyway - players who think they have a chance, and would probably like a long enough race to prove it.

The prestigious "King" title would be cheapened if we allow luck to be a significant factor. A "level" playing field is one that takes as much luck as possible out of the equation. In my view the AZB King should be a player. If we just want to maximize participation (which sounds like what Black-Balled is trying to get at), just play races to 2 or 3 for $2 - but it really takes away any prestige that the title might confer.

We are a forum of serious players, serious students, and lover's of the game. There is plenty of AZB socializing to be had at many events - I'm not really sure that $50 wagering between players that may not know each other well encourages the type of socializing that many seem to have in mind . A $50 wager is fairly serious for many poster's, if we are going to set that as the wager, the match's themselves are going to be serious - I do not anticipate that many matches will be "hit and giggle" (like at DCC).

P.S. - I'd rip steev's heart out for $40......well......maybe $45.

steev,
Well......I suppose it would....but who are you going to tell after it happens????? Perhaps I just meant it figuratively rather than literally (in case any lawyers are reading this).

Besides, in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, they were starting to rip his heart out; and he escaped and destroyed the whole shebang.....he could be your role model (well, except he's getting kind of old now; his chances of sleeping with Princess Leia are significantly reduced.....errrr...that's a different movie.....please ignore this post).
