ok...............since the other thread has died off...........i'll start this one.

last chance, nominate the person you would like to see get the AZB funds for the US OPEN. after a few days i will put a poll together, and ask mike to make it a sticky for a while.

since i'm right down the road, and i plan on attending the open, i will handle the money if no one else wants to.

my nomination is Blackjack.

thanks

VAP

I nominate Jimmy Menodza, but no matter who we choose, I plan to contribute $200 toward their expenses.

I'm as big a Blackjack fan as their is, but Jimmy has earned this chance with some outstanding results in top regional events since the last US Open.

I nominate lukeinva! Sure he is already going to be there but hell who doesnt want a free trip!!!

Edit----- By the way VAP how can I contribute you taking paypal or what?

as im not as up to date on the players from this board.....i will go along with whom so ever you all choose.....i will contribute at least a c-note to this venture........i will also offer to do any cue work free of charge to whomever is chose....this includes tips, new ferrules,re-wrapping cue and cleaning and polishing of any all shafts that will be needed for this event......i wish i could get out to attend myself or even offer more than this, but alas my illness prevents from doing more........i just hope that who ever is chosen will give a 100% and represent guys like me as well as they can.........good luck and keep me posted......anyone thats willing to give me info on the players that are nominated can email me at quewhiz189@yahoo.com......i look forward to helping as much as i can and i wish the nominated player the best of luck at the open......start practicing now and get in shape physically and mentally so you can enjoy every bit of what the open has to offer.......keep in touch, juston

I think a private or secret ballot might bring more votes as many of us would hate to choose one player over another.
I'm in for Blackjack or anyone else we choose.

thats a good point. is it possible to keep who voted for who private? if not, i'll put up a public vote, and people can also PM me their votes. of if people think it would be more fair, someone can be in charge of the PM votes to keep from having a conflict of interest.

thanks

IIRC last year the only folks that received a vote were those who contributed.

ok, that makes it easier then.

guess i'll just post my contact info, and collect money. after i get the contribution, the person gives me their vote.

question, since the basic contribution is 25, should each 25 count for a vote? say sjm gives 200, since he contributed more, should he get 8 votes?

seems fair that if he gave more money, his vote counts more?

or just one vote per person, no matter what?

I feel I should have no more say than anyone else able to contribute. I know I'm lucky to have the means to contribute more than some, but the joy of contributing to somebody's dream is all I ask, and not a greater say in the matter.

I'm in, VAP. I don't know all the players either, so the concensus choice is good for me.

It makes sense, to let only those that contribute vote. I do see an opprotuninty for "using" the system, if votes are sold for $25. Say, it's getting down to the end and $2000 has been contributed. All one would have to do is contribute $2025, to have the ultimate say in who goes. If that same person votes for himself, then basically all other contributers, in essence have been robbed.
I suggest, voting and after a designee has been chosen, then begin the fundraising. Who ever is elected, will get more money this way, IMO. We have almost three months, plenty of time to do it right. Also, if there is a positive balance after expenses are paid, it should go into a fund for next year.
It would be cool if we could also send Mike Howerton as our own personal reporter.

ok, good points. here's how i think i'll do it. if anyone else wants to step up, and run this thing, by all means, do so. the last thread seemingly died out, and i don't want this thing to go south.

i'll talk to mike about making a sticky thread. i will post me email address there. that can be used for pay pal. if someone wants to send a money order, i will email, or PM them my address. when i recieve the money, that person is allowed to vote.

i will not post who voted for who, and i will not post the results until a couple weeks before the open. i WILL however, notify each person who is voted for, everytime they get a vote. that way, they will know what their chances for going are, so they can make arrangements with their employer, etc, etc.

also, if someone is voted for, i contact them, and they say they don't want to/can't make it, i will let the person who voted for them another vote. that way all that can go and are nominated will be the only ones who recieve votes.

i'll talk to don, and see how he handled the money and such last year. i know i will be in a hotel the entire week in va beach, i'm waiting to hear from someone back on whether they will be sharing a room with me or not.

hopefully i'll get the sticky up after a few days, i'm wanting feedback on how people think this should be done. i think the above posted way is the fairest way possible.

thanks

If you want to I can put a mini web page together to show pictures of players people vote on with stats and background. We can even put # of votes and display money raised to date. For that matter anyone is welcome to do this. Link it from the sticky also.

I'm in for what I can afford. I dont think there should be a minimum. I can do
the $25 but maybe some others can not. If they want to share then they should be allowed. Its a free forum where anyone can contribute.
I also think it would be better to have a nomination period(maybe a week) and the top 3 or so be the finalist. Then vote on those guys. Maybe we get enough to give some to a couple of players. That way the players would know that they were in the mix and the voters would know they were voting on a person that was in the mix.
Is a two week notice enough notice for the player or players to be ready to go. If theres airfare involved we would be better served to make a ticket purchase early.
I also think the player/players going should be willing to give updates and reports hopefully from the Open.

Another thought....this is year two and it looks like it will remain an annual
trip for an AZbilliards person. Maybe theres a way to raise funds.
What do you think the chances of getting some signed memorabilia. It could be auction and the proceed sent to Mike for the next years funding pool.
It would make it easier to send players and hopefully keep this effort
moving every year.

I would like to hear others thoughts on different events as well. I know alot of people hold the US Open high but IMO its not what it used to be and I am not a huge fan of the Promotor or the UPA. I will send someone there but
think theres other events that are worthwhile as well. Theres tons of stories and action as well as top play at the DCC. Its entry fee is a good bit cheaper which might lead to more AZB partcipants. Virginia Beach is not the cheapest of locations to send a player either.

Just some thoughts. I am in and hopefully can contribute more than $25 but I am good for that.

As for the memorabilia. Is there time to try and contact a few players and see if they would contribute something. I am not sure what is considered a
good auction item but I dont think it would have to be anything big.
Some others may have better thoughts about this idea or a better one.

I say lets get the nominations and voting over with and that way the player/s know for sure they are going and what funds they are getting.

For those who don't know who Jimmy Mendoza is, he is an excellent player. He consistently does well in all of the tournaments i've seen him in. At Hard Times in bellflower, Reno, and the Pechauer tour events he is a force to be reckoned with. He's beaten Max Eberle, Morro, King Kong, Ernesto, Jerry Brunstetter, and all the top LA and west coast players at least once. Strong break, rock solid fundamentals, consistent, and a great guy. This nomination could be his wedding gift!!! Just my nomination.
