Can't recall who set it up but the reason it doesn't continue is that it used to take up a room that had two tables in it, making those tables unavailable for tournament play. Space no longer allows this given the field sizes we find today. The 14.1 challenge met a similar fate, as Diamond could no longer allocate the tables. As Bob Jewett has so often noted, the Derby City Classic has outgrown the Horseshoe Hotel.

All that said, the AZB room was great fun and allowed AZB posters to meet each other in a friendly environment.

I could be wrong but i thought it was Tom Ferry (oldhasbeen) that had something to do with it.

The AZB room was great for many reasons.....except, many non-AZBers used it for a practice/gamble room. If you questioned their affiliation it often became hostile.

It could be a 'money maker' for AZB by making it available to AZB Paid Up Members. If it comes back I will offer to take part in monitoring it. I met many good folks there.

Back when I was simply lurking, I read a thread about funding/organizing the DCC Room. It seemed like a great idea, but I was curious why anyone needed additional diversions when DCC already had so much to offer. But the idea seemed to garner much enthusiasm. I just wondered if it was as good as I sensed and what had happened to it.

With the capable and responsible folks on here, it would seem that managing such would be a cakewalk. Care would have to be taken to not put too much on any one person or group, because I can appreciate folks not wanting to be tied down in the midst of such a fantastic maelstrom.

I hate being Debbie Downer, but it just seems that DCC should find a way to accommodate such positive features. From my perspective, I'd like to look at DCC and think "There is no way I'm gonna miss it" rather than "I sure miss what it used to be". Now that I have participated on AZB for a little while, a facility like an AZB Room and the opportunity to meet and interact with AZBers would be a compelling reason to attend DCC.

The way I had it clocked was if you paid, you played, but evidently that's not the way it went down. How was it that control was lost?

I want to say that 1P,org also had a room (or it piggybacked with AZB) but I am not at all clear on this.

Possibly. I think Steve Lomako may have helped the cause, too, but I just cannot seem to remember.
Tom originally suggested something like a get together and then Williebetmore (Dr Don Wardell), Timberly and myself put it together.

There was a room down one of the hallways at the EW (Executive West) that Greg Sullivan said we could pay for it and he would put a table in it.

The first year worked out real nice and I told Greg there was room for a second table so the next year we had 2 in there.

Don and Timberly back away after a couple of years and when DCC moved to the casino there just wasn’t any space big enough for it. It was in a small room with 2 tables and after the second year it finished. 😢

It never affected the tournament at either venue. It cost me out of my pocket making up the difference on stuff just like Bob Jewett and the straight pool but hey 🤷🏻‍♂️

Simple. Get the Horseshoe to triple its convention space. I don't think Diamond wants to repeat the scheduling fiasco of last year and if it is a choice between AZB and 20 more players in each division, ...
How big is the Horseshoe and how does it compare with EW?

Hoeseshoe can't be the only game in town, True convention hotels are constantly seeking business.

He won’t do it because of the casino perks but when Greg was looking around when the Executive West was going to remodel he was looking at “The Galt House” in downtown Louisville. What a place that is. 👍🏻

The Executive West said a few years ago they would have welcomed Diamond back with open arms after they remodeled.

I did a photo shoot and tour and talked to people in charge there one year.

Posted it on onepocket.org back then.

Do you remember the total scheduling disaster last year? That was because Diamond already has tables in every nook and cranny available and there are still not enough tables for the tournament. There is not any room for anything else in the present situation.

The Executive hotels together had room to add an amateur event on 7-foot tables. I'm not sure how many 9-foot tables were set up, but I don't recall any scheduling problem.

I wonder if there is any meeting space in the hotel itself. An awkward alternative is to have an AZB table in the sales booth area.

I was involved with Planning and Zoning for many years. We referred to this situation as the "5 gallon bucket problem".

There is no space in the Hotel. If there was, the walk is so far from the tournament area you might as well have a tent out in the parking garage with tables.

My recollection is that post-remodel the EW was bought by a chain.

I also recall someone posting they went in and said that there was no way that property could now host a DCC because of how it was redesigned.

Thanks for filling in the blanks here and for the role you played, Steve. Hope you see you at the Derby.

I was there most of the time and one problem is that there was so much action and watching tournment play that no one wanted to stay in
the room all day and monitor, so when it was empty anyone could go in and play, and if two azb players wanted to come in and play they
would of had to kick the people playing off and then you have issues. We did have azb badges but that didn't help much,.

Go bring up my thread at onepocket. Took care of it and it’s posted below. 👍🏻

They remodeled and there is even more space than before. The whole pool area is open space.

I took a ton of pictures that I posted on the thread Lou.

Actually I’ll go and link it here.
