I'll have to go to Phoenix in a couple weeks or so on business. What are the must-see rooms in town, and are there any good weekly tournaments I could catch?

I would check out Kolbys in Tempe on University,i like it there and from noon to 7pm its only $7,Scott Frost and other good players play there, good action too. :)

I agree with Lenny. Kolby's is a great place to play. As far as pool tourney's to play in there are plenty. How long are you in town for?

You know...as far as "must-see" I don't think there currently is one.

What I mean by that is there is no "Hard Times" or "Amsterdam" or "Capones" or "Hollywood Billiards"....if that is what you mean by "must see"...If that is what your looking for...suggesting any would probably be a let down for you IMO...

You are probably going to be limited on tournaments as well since you will probably only be able to play in open events...

Tournaments
For 9-foot open events...
Monday @ Metro
Tuesday @ Kolbys
Thursday @ Main Street Mesa...(I think)

Open Bar Box....??? No Idea...

Action

For 9-foot action
Alexanders
Kolbys
Main Street
Metro - (Maybe)

Bar Box Action

Arizona has a Rating System, and if you have no RATING CARD you can only play in OPEN EVENTS.

Kolby's by ASU is the BEST room in the Valley of the Sun. IMHO.. Alexander?s in Phoenix is Second BEST IMHO

.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably be in town 3 days (two nights.) I'll try to stay on a Monday & Tuesday so I can catch those 2 open tournaments.

I'll post dates when I know more. Hope to see you there.

Yeah post the dates when it gets closer and I will try and meet ya somewhere. I always like meeting pool players from around the country. I am sure other people would like to meet ya as well.

Just a for warning though...Both are handicapped.

On the Monday night you will probably have to play as a 10 rated player meaning you will have to go to 7 games...It is quite possible to draw a 6 or 7 rated player that will only need to go to 3 or 4 games... This tournament is capped at the first 32 sign ups...It got capped out this last Monday....

Tuesday is a ball weight handicapp...Again you may be asked to play as a 10 rated player and give up ball weght depending on the rating of your opponent.........I have not played there in a while due to it being on the other side of town for me and I can only get out to play periodically anyway........so I don't know the specific ball weights required.......but rumor has it that they get a decent weekly tournout on Tuesday night...

the ball weight goes something like this.
10 playing a 7 - 7 gets the 6 ball out.
10 playing a 9 - 9 gets the 8 ball.
9 playing an 8 - 8 gets the 8 ball.
8 playing an 8 - even game.
7 playing a 6 - 6 gets the 8 ball out.
Basically the difference in handicap means the difference in balls given
I am 99% positive this is the way it works.

I just bought plane tickets today. I'll be at the Metro on the 10th of March and Kolby's on the 11th.

Hopefully I'll make both tournaments on time.

If you get to Kolby's early enough and ask for Tracy. He is the TD and I think he can give you an AZ rating also. Tell him that Mark Cantrill said that he might help you out and if he has the time he will get you a rating real quick. If you are a 10 or better then don't worry about it.

I'll try to do that.

Trip Cancelled

Today I learned that the business deal I was going to close in Phoenix has fallen through. I had to cancel my tickets, rental car, and room reservations today.

Thank you for all of the advice on the local pool scene. Hopefully I will get there another time.
