A GREAT DAY

I heard from someone the Riv is going down late this year and the BCA,VNEA,ACS,APA is going to be held at the Stratosphere next year. Can anyone give me the truth to this matter?

This is sort of the same rumor that goes around every year. I don't know about the BCA's relationship to the Riv, but it looks like the Riv is here to stay for at least a little longer.

Anyone that went to the event 6 weeks ago saw numerous renovations to the hotel. The staff I spoke to all said that the decision was made to upgrade the hotel, rather than implode it. I can't see why they would have thrown all that money into fixing the place up if it wasn't even going to last the year.

Could the BCA move to another hotel anyway? Sure!

The BCAPL still has a contract with the Riv. Another couple of years. But, that's only a peice of paper in todays World....randyg

The flyer I picked up while there says it is at the Riviera in 2008......Gives phone numbers and everything. The one with an Elvis on the front....So...Should be at the Riviera...

I bet if you asked Elvis back then if the RIV would be still around in 2008 he would roll over in his grave. :D lol.

Even if the Riv finally does get imploded for the love of all that is holy don't move the BCA to the Stratosphere. That end of the strip is boring AND dangerous. The Riv is already a long way away from the real section of the strip, and with the MIA Westward Ho and Stardust I hardly even felt like I was in Vegas last year except for the few times I did the 1 mile+ walk to see the true happening part of the strip.

If they want to (or are forced to) move the tournament location put it up in Mandalay Bay. Granted it is on the other end of the strip, but with trams connecting it to the Luxor and Excaliber you are only a tram ride away from the happening section of the strip.

Furthermore the last few years I have went to Mandalay Bay during the BCA it has been dead, the Convention Center was not in use and the slots and gaming tables were busy gathering dust. I think that a person would have a good chance to negotiate a fair price for the use of the convention center and filling up rooms at Mandalay Bay and using extra's in the Luxor and Excaliber if MB were filled to capacity.

Mandaly Bay is vastly nicer then the Riv, and with a HUGE convention facility that would be perfect for the tournament. I am pretty sure they would enjoy having an influx of pool players for that otherwise dead week, many of whom gamble.

i would agree 100%,mandalay is a very nice hotel and everytime i have been to the place its been a ghost town.It would bring some business to them. And i also agree with NOT having it at the stratosphere.I have been to vegas many times and seen every hotel there is including downtown, but have never set foot in the stratosphere just because its so out of the way from anything.

Do you really think that they Mandalay Bay wants 10,000 pool players there??
There are tons of venues that CAN hold the event but in all honestsy how many want to?

A few years ago while at the APA nationals there was a group of guys walking around in suits. They stopped a few people and asked some
survay type questions. Turns out they were from the Sands and the Tropicana. I heard that the Trop wanted the APA events but I cant be sure.

The Riv is a dump and is way overpriced IMO. However, they want and
seem to like the Pool events being there. Even Dart and Foose Ball events are held there.

The Riv also hosts 2 additional pool events -- there are two events called
The Southwest Challenge 8 Ball and 9 Ball. They are ran by the Southwest
regions APA league operators. The 8ball is in the spring and the 9ball in the fall. The 8ball usually comes close to filling or fills a 256 team bracket with 3 people per team. The 9 ball event has been a little smaller and hasnt filled.

There is currently a little bidding war going on to acquire the Riv and ultimately knock it over. So far, no bids near what the Riv thinks it's worth. I think it's pretty likely the tourneys will be at the Riv next year, but after that, who knows.

I don't disagree with the quality part, but I just looked at a hotel reservation web site and it lists MBay from $214/night and the Riv from $40/night. I think you can actually get into MBay for closer to $120/night, but even so....

Another factor that has to be considered is how easy or hard the hotel makes it for the promoter. Having organized two tournaments at the Riv, I know that they make it pretty easy and not too expensive. Not all hotels are like that.

National Tournaments

The Riv. is taking reservations now for May and June of 08, so one would think they are still thinking they will be operating.....3 to 5 years and Riv will have to catch up with all the other properties in vegas.

Man.Bay would be a great place except the cost to stay there will out price most of the people who attend the event, maybe a million added would take the pressure off the players expenses when they will be earning money at event. Maybe ManBay will give up room at $40-$50 a night just for pool players too.....

One reason for having it at the Riv was the fact that it was one of the only venues not run by a union/teamsters...until this year. It gets expensive for vendors and promoters when you have to pay to have them move the tables/booths. We just got a quote to unload our booth and we'd really have to light it up to break even.
