Back in Manila again

Frankly, I don't see how anyone can think about pool in the Phils. I was there in 2003 for 19 days and believe me, pool was the last thing on my mind when normally I can't stop thinking about it. If you're 50 , fat, bald, gray haired and over the hill, and you never felt like a rock star, go to the Philippines for the time of your life ;) ...Tom

Just flew in yesterday from Hong Kong. And I already have a permanent smile on my face. Why not, everyone smiles and say hello to you. Pretty girls everywhere with a ready smile for you too. Even the armed security guards love talking with an American. Somehow, some way, Americans are still loved and respected over here.

And our dollar still has big buying power here. I am in a very nice private hotel, staying in a suite for about $70 a night. Breakfast for two included. Not to mention the love for pool that pervades the entire culture. Tell someone that you know Efren and Busti and you have their complete attention. I love going into poolrooms full of serious players with a real respect for the game. And an appreciation for any knowledge you share with them. I taught Efren a tricky little One Pocket shot once and he likes to show that shot to the locals now. Yes, I REALLY DID! Okay okay, now I'm bragging.

And did I mention all the pretty and very friendly girls. Now I love to look and talk to them, but my heart belongs to my little Michaela. I will SO happy to see her again.

I just feel so good in this faraway land. I feel at home here, after my fifth visit in less than three years. And they speak English too, another big plus. I only wish I would have discovered it a little sooner. Efren and others invited me many years ago, and I was always too busy. My bad!

dog..

it's been a few years since my last visit, a few years too many. i keep telling myself that everything has it's time. s.e. asian time better be coming up soon! oh the people, oh the food!..

keep us posted on your adventures (not all of'em..)

Michaela would be right up there with the best of them. I just spent the day at the Mall Of Asia, the largest mall in Asia. I saw many, many girls just as beautiful all day long. A veritable feast for the eyes. One small prob, Michaela was walking with me. :D

I wasn't in the city. I stayed on Lantau Island in the fishing village of Mui Wo. A total kickback place. I'm headed out on the 13th. Sorry my man.

Can I get a job there?

Jay,

Can I get a job there?? Are the passport prices still $125 or more. Remember, the bubble headed bleach blond comes on at 5:00.

I just want a small pool hall. I'll work the counter and not even play till my off hours. Promise.

Have Fun. Don't do anything I wouldn't do. Oh yeah Michaela is right there.
:D :D

A little report for yo'all. I went to the Horizon Plaza Mall yesterday to do some shopping. It is right across the road from my hotel, the Orchid Gardens. So I'm walking thru the mall and I spy a three table poolroom smack dab in the middle. Only in Manila would this be possible.

I walk in and ask who the best player is, and everyone points at one guy. His name is Bon and turns out he is the owner of this little establishment. I challenge him to a game and he readily accepts. He asks me if I want to gamble. I say sure and he says how about 1,000p a game (about $25). Okay I say, let's go. He sees that I'm serious so he says no bet, let's just play. Fine with me, I just feel like playing.

We agree to play Eight Ball and off we go. Bon can play, he has a good cue and they are his tables. I win the first game. ha ha. I carry a small scotch brite pad and a little tip tool, so I can work a house cue, and I do. I'm not a complete sucker you know. I ask Bon if I can check out his cue and he hands it to me. This is a friendly game after all. It's a nice custom made filipino cue and it feels good. I like it so he lets me play with it.

Now I'm winning more games then him and a large crowd has gathered around the poolroom. People are calling me Earl Strickland. I guess it's the only American name they all know. Kind of ironic huh. We have a good session for a couple of hours and I tell him thanks for the game. I go back to my shopping, game over.

Last night I hit One Side early. I practice a little with the owner watching me. His name is Aso from Japan. We talk about Japanese players like Fujima (a legend), Okimura and Takahashi. He sees that I'm struggling and he gets me his Mezz cue. NICE! I can play with this cue. A good looking filipino guy saunters in with his very attractive lady friend, both with cues in tow. He sits down next to my table and totally sweats me. So finally, I can't stand it and I ask him if he wants to play.

Turns out to be another fun game but so what. I like to play pool, money or not. We play 9-Ball and I'm rolling now. Totally put Chris in his chair. I'm playing pretty good and getting every roll. We've all seen both ends of this. He is getting frustrated so I take a dinner break and let his girl play. I watch and chat. Many of the good locals are coming in, and they remember me from my last visits. I will not play these guys even, unless it's One Pocket or Banks, and that just ain't gonna happen.

I hang a while and finally go back to my hotel. Michaela is coming the next morn, so I need my rest. I'm with her today, so no more pool for a while. Duty first and all that nonsense.

Jay. When you start talking like this, it takes me right back to my Navy days when we used to stop in Subic Bay so much. I have such great memories of those days. Going on the beach was an adventure everytime, such pretty girls there, the bands, Pool halls, restaurants, White Castle beach.

Have fun, I know you will!!!
I can taste that ice-cold San Magoo right now. Too bad the young Navy guys now won't ever know the paradise called the P.I. The first time we pulled in there in '68 a lot of the streets in Olongapo were not paved, and security guys with all sorts of weapons patrolled the main drag. And the music in the bars! You heard every type of music. The bar I hung in a guy played Eric Clapton's solo from " crossroad" note for note. ..man oh man. Memories.

the LBFM's you're talking about are now being replaced by semi-caucasian and mestizas, fairly sized (5'4), pretty nosed, attractive females. I dunno if you prefer LBFMs, but these new ones are way much better for my taste. I was there some 5 years ago during the Annual October Booze Festival and Annual City Celebration which is on another date. you could find them at every street corner sprawling around and waiting for some action. some will give you that wicked smile and some with a simple wink. but I do love the ones that would look you straight in the eye as if asking you if you could last for more than 3 hours straight. lol.

if you want to have an idea and assess the appearances of what pretty faces I'm talking about, you could look over gopi's post. don't go drooling too hard, ok? lol

Just spotted the thread, Jay. You've got most every AZBer green with envy and awaiting your next report.

We love the story of the matchups, the players and yes, the ladies.

Keep up the good work and send plenty of reports. Our match can wait. :D
