Editing Your Posts

My apologies to the pinoy ladies..absolutely no disrespect intended. But I would be interested in knowing if any Filipinos out there resented anything else in my post.
The philipines were one of the highlights of my life.

You seem pretty sincere in your apology. You can take it another step if you choose.

I see that you have only a couple a hundred posts so I will assume that you have not had the opportunity to experience editing your previous posts. Go to any posts that you have made and just below your text there is an EDIT BUTTON which you can click on and then delete any portion of your post that you previously made. After editing the post, YOU MUST SAVE THE CHANGES. Just click on the save changes feature. The acronym can be removed by you ONLY for posterity.

Once you have done so, others may follow suit and remove all of the offending acronyms from this thread.

Don't get the wrong idea. I'm not telling you what to do, only what can be done. It's your choice and the choice of the rest of the posters in this thread.

Any pinoys wanna help me out with something? I am looking to bring wifey, and go to the World 10 Ball championships in September. It is located at PICC. Anyone know what a good, modestly priced hotel is in that area?

Looking for $50 a night or below, preferably Queen or King bed. Looking to stay the entire time of the Championships. If it is equidistant to main money rooms in Manila... Bonus! Would definitely not mind sweating some action.. Or even getting in some action, if I can sucker some nice Filipino into spotting me the mortal nuts. :D :D :D

Russ

You can stay where Jay is right now. it's close to the PICC and OneSide. speaking of mortal nuts, you will see a lot of ridiculous nuts you had ever seen at OneSide, so try not to lose the shirt on your back. :D

If you love seafoods, there is a place called Seaside Market along Roxas Boulevard. which is about 7-10 minutes away from Oneside. the food there is excellent.

A little report for yo'all. I went to the Horizon Plaza Mall yesterday to do some shopping. It is right across the road from my hotel, the Orchid Gardens. So I'm walking thru the mall and I spy a three table poolroom smack dab in the middle. Only in Manila would this be possible.

I walk in and ask who the best player is, and everyone points at one guy. His name is Bon and turns out he is the owner of this little establishment. I challenge him to a game and he readily accepts. He asks me if I want to gamble. I say sure and he says how about 1,000p a game (about $25). Okay I say, let's go. He sees that I'm serious so he says no bet, let's just play. Fine with me, I just feel like playing.

We agree to play Eight Ball and off we go. Bon can play, he has a good cue and they are his tables. I win the first game. ha ha. I carry a small scotch brite pad and a little tip tool, so I can work a house cue, and I do. I'm not a complete sucker you know. I ask Bon if I can check out his cue and he hands it to me. This is a friendly game after all. It's a nice custom made filipino cue and it feels good. I like it so he lets me play with it.

Now I'm winning more games then him and a large crowd has gathered around the poolroom. People are calling me Earl Strickland. I guess it's the only American name they all know. Kind of ironic huh. We have a good session for a couple of hours and I tell him thanks for the game. I go back to my shopping, game over.

Last night I hit One Side early. I practice a little with the owner watching me. His name is Aso from Japan. We talk about Japanese players like Fujima (a legend), Okimura and Takahashi. He sees that I'm struggling and he gets me his Mezz cue. NICE! I can play with this cue. A good looking filipino guy saunters in with his very attractive lady friend, both with cues in tow. He sits down next to my table and totally sweats me. So finally, I can't stand it and I ask him if he wants to play.

Turns out to be another fun game but so what. I like to play pool, money or not. We play 9-Ball and I'm rolling now. Totally put Chris in his chair. I'm playing pretty good and getting every roll. We've all seen both ends of this. He is getting frustrated so I take a dinner break and let his girl play. I watch and chat. Many of the good locals are coming in, and they remember me from my last visits. I will not play these guys even, unless it's One Pocket or Banks, and that just ain't gonna happen.

I hang a while and finally go back to my hotel. Michaela is coming the next morn, so I need my rest. I'm with her today, so no more pool for a while. Duty first and all that nonsense.

Jay, I was just wondering if in some of the larger $$ games over there, do they still use a piece of chalk (white) to keep track of side-betting by writing it out on the table cloth itself. I have a book, "Billiards -Hustlers and Heroes, Legends and Lies and the Search for Higher Truth on the Green Felt", from the late 70's where it shows in one part Efren playing the author of the book with all that taking place. I thought this was quite a unique system. It seems like they really get into their pool over there, it must be quite a "ball" to be there. :D

some pool halls have a small chalkboards to keep track of all the sidebetting and the odds.

I find this very dissapointing myself, especially the part of Filipinos egging such behavior.... LBFM is one of the worst thing I hear about Filipinas, and it shows lack of respect for a whole country and it's people. I can't understand how Filipinos on this forum can accept posts like this, and even contribute the way some of them do.

I have been to the Philippines twice, and I fell in love with the country and the people already after my first days there. The people are so friendly, everyone smiles and shares a good laughter with you. I am soon on my way for my third trip in less than 15 months. It's definitely become my second home, and I am dreaming of the possibility to make it my first home.

However, the poverty is shocking for a young guy like me, living in one of the richest countries in the world, Norway. Unfortunately this poverty makes people/force people (often young girls) to do things they would never have done if their situation was different. If they had the oppurtunities for good education, a decent meal every day, a nice room with a comfortable bed, good jobs and a decent salary there wouldn't be so many foreigners who proudly could talk and bragg about those LBFM's. If their situation would be a little different they wouldn't need "the company" of elderly foreigners to get a decent meal, a comfortable bed and maybe some new clothes...

I have experienced a women (mother or grandmother) who tried to give/sell (I don't know) her two very young girls to me (max 14 years old), when I was walking in daylight from my hotel to One Side. I had to turn around immidiately because I felt so bad. Imagine the life these people are living, who even consider doing things like this. The worst part is that those little girls will probably grow up to be "LBFM's", who some foreigners will bragg about in the future...

I am getting sick of threads like this.

"Your man in Manila" was the thread Jay Helfert started during the World Championship in 2007, and this thread was POOL RELATED with updates about happenings at the venue and at One Side, and that thread was the mainreason I decided to visit Philippines the first time. (thanks jay, I owe you a lot)

Threads about Manila/Philippines lately always seem to be dominated by posts about young smiling girls who loves foreigners, and pictures of sexy girls...

I wish Jay would start a new Manila-thread, and that we all could help keep that thread (and future threads) pool-related...

Glad to hear that from you Roy, still remember me? Anyway, send us some PMs or visit our site at www.easypooltutor.com when you come here in Manila, we'll be glad to accommodate you and have some pool fun, no more no less.

OT: I know the threadstarter is just having a good time here in Manila, but hopefully he and other poster can refrain or tame down their story about the Filipinas. Were all here for pool right? Let's try to stick with that.

This term is derogatory toward Filipina women (and other Asian women in general). I ask that you refrain from using it again.

How come every thread concerning a trip to the Philippines always seem to regress to such inappropriate discussions on Filipinas?

And I'm disappointed that the Filipino posters of this forum are egging on such behavior.

Filipina women are more than mere sex objects. They are our mothers, aunties, sisters, cousins, and daughters.

Thanks for this. I spent the afternoon roaming the Robinson's Galleria Mall with Michaela and her two year old boy Amaru; and her friend Mary, Mary's husband Dener and their 9 month old baby girl Francesca. Filipinos are VERY family oriented and usually have large extended families. They are a loving and peaceful people for the most part. You won't see any gangsters around here. And the streets of Manila are far safer than many areas of Los Angeles, my home town.

I don't know what LBFM means and I don't think I want to know.

Roy,

I love the Philippines and have the utmost respect for the people. I have made many good friends here during my visits. I did not intend for a minute for this thread to take this tone. There truly are many beautiful women here, working in stores, businesses and other venues. And raising families! I suspect more women have jobs here than men.

I prefer to share about the things that make the Philippines special to me, just one of them being a wonderful companion. For me it all comes back to pool, because without it, I would never have come here. Off to One Side tonite!

Very familiar. :)
I saw you two together at the last WPC I believe. Nice looking couple. This is the story of the PI that I like. Boy meets girl and they fall in love. It happens every day over here!

You can get a standard room at the Orchid Gardens Hotel for about $60 a night. It is walking distance from the PICC and a short taxi ride to One Side and Pool Fusion.

Big money games have a scoreboard and a referee/racker. There are typically many side bets on these matches. All done on the honor system. Filipinos are great to gamble with, no sharking, no moves, no nothing except some jam up pool shooting. If you win they shake your hand when they pay you. Just make sure you pay up promptly if you lose. A welcher over here is dealt with swiftly and severely. A word to the wise.

Excuse me Jeff, you may want to reread my original post. I NEVER said anything disrespectful about the filipinas. In fact I complimented them. Not sure what's on your mind, but I am quite happy with the young lady I met two years ago here. We have been a couple since. In fact I used to have Michaela's photo as my avatar. She is sitting next to me now. :)

This was the first thing that impressed me about Alex. At least in the early days, he never seemed angry if he lost, {and he didn't lose often, mind} was always the happy-go-lucky, smiling gentleman. Win or lose, there was always that boyish grin and "We'll play again!". Nobody likes to lose but the Filipinos always seem to just take it in stride.

Jay, I'm sure it varies but how is a referee/racker of a big money game paid? Is it relative to the size of the bet or dependent upon the generosity of the winner? Is the fee a per hour rate, per rack fee? I know the Filipinos have worked this out so that a referee is impartial and I wondered how they have made it work. Personally I like the idea of an impartial racker/referee for gambling but it is no easy job and both players must have acceptance in the ref's calls and racks.

I really don't care how much he is paid but how their fee is determined or assigned.

Thanks,
JoeyA

The winner pays about 10% to the referee, and the loser pays the table.

If the bets get real high the players and a referee agrees on a %, and the winner will then normally also pay the table.

There is a referee/spotter on every table, even on matches for as low as 1000 pesos.

The refs are normally another player, without an opponent, but there are also people who make a living of it. Anyone can be referee, and I was also referee in one match when Efren played one-pocket against a friend of mine.

Normally there is a guy who takes care of all the sidebets on every match, and this guy gets % of the referee. This guy also gets some money from the winners of the sidebets.

Last time I was at One Side Efren played race to 31 in 10-ball against Van Corteza, and the bet was 30 000 pesos. I wanted to bet on this match, so I contacted the bookie and told him I wanted to bet 10 000 on Efren. Minutes later he had found someone who liked Van Van, and confirmed the bet.

When Efren won I gave the bookie 500 pesos, 5%. Don't know if it is normal % or not.

Isn't it "policy" for the winner to also give the loser 10% of the wager as a "walking stick"? Thanks for your input.

The winning player usually gives the losing player ( called Tirador there ) a consolation money.
Jay warned about stiffing bets. YOU DON't DO THAT THERE. It'd be like a thief getting caught. Believe me, it gets ugly when that happens.

Pool thrives in Manila because a lot of rich people like to gamble and support players.

Is the consolation money amount or percentage determined before the match is played?

Is the consolation money dependent upon the generosity of the winner?
Thanks,
