Any of you instructors or posters out there know what to do when you get a very sore, stiff back? I stayed away from the table for 2-3 days but that didn't seem to help.

Any of you instructors ever run across students or players with this issue? If so, what do you usually recommend to them? I mean, besides taking two weeks off and then quitting.

I do a lot of stretching exercising every morning. Especially for the back and arms.

You may want to visit UT and check out some exercises that golfers use to loosen up.

See a doctor, pain means something is wrong, and I am not qualified to give medical advice.
 
Check your stance. At a certain age, it's not wise to emulate the pro stance fully--or at least not Mike Sigel's and etc.

If you squat/sit to the table like you want to pick up the table itself, your lower and most of your upper back will be straight. This kind of stance is positive exercise for your lower back during play and converting people to it has helped them feel great playing pool, strengthening their back rather than aching it.

There are umpteen reasons for back pain.

Poor diet.
Poor posture.
Lack of or improper exercise.
Inadequate sleep or poor sleeping posture.
...just a few.

Most players have little or no interest in improving their diet (they get their nutrition education from the TV screen).

I suggest gentle stretching in the morning, before and after any exercise (including playing pool), and before going to bed. Yoga is good; Tai Chai perhaps even better...even a few minutes a day can work wonders!
 
Yes, ever since I was a little kid. It comes and goes. And on occasion the soreness and stiffness can be really bad, painful, limiting, etc. Usually after a few days I am back to normal.

If you can post a video of yourself shooting where I can see your stance, I will be happy to take a look and make some recommendations for a stance adjustment that might not be as hard on your back.

I don't think its a stance issue. I rack and break a ton of 9-Ball racks. I think its the bending over the table to rack the balls. Billy Incardona said on an Accu-Stats video that I bought the other day that it can be really hard on one's back to rack the balls if they don't cooperate with you.

Then you can try warming up before you practice/play. Take a 10 minute walk and then do some back stretches before you play. Look them up online. If you start with a tight back, it can only get worse as the session goes on. Make sure you take the walk first. It's important to warm up your body before you stretch.

If I were you, I'd get to a doctor to confirm that nothing's wrong and then start a regimen at a gym to do some weight-bearing exercises for your back to strengthen it.

I'm not young but I work out 5 days a week, and was able to shovel 30 inches of snow from in front of my house and dig out 2 buried cars with no back strain. There's no way I could have done that before I started going to the gym.

IMO, you need to exercise and strengthen the back and abdomen. They work together to keep the body upright and the spine aligned correctly. A light workout a few times a week will strengthen the core and loosen up the muscle groups that are probably too weak to do their jobs.

I work out a couple of days a week and lift a few days a week. My workout consists of a lot of stretching and cardio. My lifting varies depending on how much cardio I do. The key is to do more than walk around the table for your exercise.

I could've had help if I wanted it but I actually wanted to do it, John. I'm one of the few freaks who likes shoveling snow. It's a good workout. I work out harder than that in the gym.
 
I don't think he noticed it yesterday either.

This is an age old problem. Not worried about it. If the muscles aren't better first of next week I might try using the heating/vibrating pad thing that I bought last summer. We are supposed to have a few inches of snow around Sunday or Monday so I might be snowed in anyway.

Seeing dr is the best advice. I have been going to pt. Was told one thing to do bend the knees a little to take pressure off ham strings.
If racking is causing problem then win more games so opponent racks.
 
Hire someone to go with you and rack the balls if its only racking that does it. While you are playing other people just don't lose and play loser racks.
