Bad Beat----The Golden Break

With a tight rack you can make that nine move. I was playing a match a couple of weeks ago where my opponent was a master of this break. I know how to rack and know the racks were tight. In the first game the nine rattled in the corner that is how fast it moved toward the pocket, he ended three fouling me on the one ball. Game two he breaks the nine. Game three the nine misses the corner by an inch, after a he takes a flyer on the one nine combo and leaves me safe, one nine for the win. Fourth rack, nine misses the corner by an inch he ended up leaving me a carom off of the three for the win. Score was three to one with maybe six balls being made, all with tight racks. I actually had to turn to rack mechanics to stop this BS. He broke the nine in the final rack of the set, after I again gave him a nice tight rack. Who the heck enjoys playing a set of nine ball fading a nine sitting in the corner the whole time. That is not fun at all.
Get a clean cotton rag w/o lint....dampen it and go over the rack area, that will equalize the matter. Channeling comes to mind when the nine does this consistently, seen it many times.

10 on the break doesn't win the frame, or are there other rules I don't know about?

no here in america everyone seems to have their "own" rules. Hell the only league that I know of that follows the standardized rules is the BCAPL...apa, slap and all that dont.

Then every bar plays a little differient. Friend took me to some hole in the wall event few weeks back....out in the middle of no where by a paper mill....

(i'm sure there was a hole dug around somewhere for dead body storage)

8 ball tournament. 25 players, 50 added per every 5 over 10 people.

Rules..........if you ever decide to play any kind of safety what so ever, legal or not by the standardized rules........its ball in hand across the table.

All other scratches, or CB jumps off table......its "typical" bar rules and its BIH b/h the kitchen..........

races to one..........lol. I snapped it off.....and used the two way shot once so i din't break their "rules"

lol,

If you can pocket the 9 on the break, is it not, considered a skill ?

We buy break cues to make the 9 on the break

I bet a player with a weak break will never pocket the 9 ball on the break in 1000 tries..

now give the same 1000 break shot to Bustamante and see how many 9 on the break he makes...

it is a skill, not a perfect skill, but part of your arsenal...

and that's why 10 ball call shot call safe is my favorite money game. No luck just making the balls and calling the safe if you need to other guy leaves you tough give it back.

For all you pros and TD's running major events consider this.

Many of us have been beaten in this manner, and it takes your heart out especially if you've come back from nowhere and your now hill/hill.... Also, I feel winning in this manner diminishes the greatness of our sport.

If you make the 9 on the break ANYWHERE leave it down, NOW the 8 becomes Game Ball.

Make the 10 on the break, the 9 becomes Game Ball.

It'll also inadvertently speed up some matches.

Safety break and alternate. Good enough for 14.1, good enough for snooker.

Why does the one ball need be placed on the foot spot? The required opening position should be the nine in the middle, one ball either wing position, racker's choice.

Real men shoot pool. Cave men smash balls.

Amen brother....but we are the minority....the people love slop pool around here. They probably aren't betting enough for the slop to hurt. I don't want to win with slop as much as I don't want to lose to it. Pros playing luck pool cheapens the game.

Alternate break has no place in big boy pool. Winner break is the only way to play if guys can runout.

I personally think pro pool in Majors should be done in the same manner as Professional Tennis. Sets 3 outta five, single elimination with tiebreakers. I've seen tennis matches many times go over three hours. Lag and first set you break all the racks, opponent racks. Second set, you break all the racks and opponent racks. Keeps it simple and allows the good players to find a groove. Single elimination Works in Tennis....it's a proven format. This will also allow the player that loses to leave and not hang around and pay hotel etc costs for the long haul. I also allows the TD a manageable time frame for match play, and the audience has a good idea when the next match will be. Dbl Elim. makes it very difficult to manage timelines.

I agree tennis has a great format. Winning by 2 games at deuce and tiebreaker to decide sets generates excitement.

I will watch tennis and I've probably played 2 times in my life.

They promote their star players too. It's a game associated with affluence so they get big money advertisers. They seed tournaments which is unfair in ways but it promotes the big name players.

I'm the same with golf, love ta watch but don't enjoy the game because it's too slow for my dna, plus it costs allot. Their commercials are BMW, Rolex, Mercedes etc. Those demographics speak loudly as to who they market too.

I've been hooked on Pool & Snooker for 57 years. I still to this day enjoy a good match on TV (PPV or YouTube) I've even learned some things by watching.

It's too bad the Break Shot has so much consternation surrounding it. It's true, when your opponent is preparing to break, a little bit of anxiety creeps into your soul about the forthcoming event. Will it be a reward for your opponent or a reward for you.

Bang goes the cue ball & for a split second you & the opponent are frozen in time. Then the outcome is witnessed & it's game on.

I had a real good player once told me that he loved my break, you break 'em up & I run out... you break 'em out & I run out. Then he laughed. They all laughed.

So, I started practicing the Break Shot & reversed that situation. I can break & run myself, although I'm getting older (73) & don't have the stamina for long tournaments. I'm relegated to the Golf Table now.

When I started learning about the Break Shot in 9-Ball or 10-Ball or 8-Ball, reading books, practicing, watching videos, asking questions & learning application. It didn't take long for me to understand that making a ball & having position on the 1-Ball afterwards, made a HUGE difference in the outcome.

Lots of players have begun to practice the Break Shot, in an effort to fell comfortable in that arena.
