What is the worse pool related advice anyone has ever given you? You know... bad advice regarding how to play, cues, strategy, etc...

Not too try out an aiming system and the top three players today at sbe, all use a system and they don't pretend its halloween every time they get on a table ;)

Good luck getting folks to fess up to that one. :rotflmao1:
As for my part the worst pool advice I ever gave were the missed oportunities that I did not give the benefit of my experience especially to young up and coming players. Those missed opportunities have been few, but I am sure I have missed a few.

Im giving advice all the time. Just dont know which is right or which is wrong. Sometimes im given certain strategies that at first doesnt make sense then i later realize the person had a point. Other times its the opposite.

The worst advice ... "don't play that guy!"

There's always some railbird chomping at the bit to tell you who you can't beat. That's why they're railbirds and can't play themselves. Too bad I didn't figure that out until my playing days, if you want to call it that, were pretty much over. Now I really shouldn't play anyone, so it would be GREAT advice! Funny how that works. :D

In the 1st couple years of playing league pool, i got into it with a guy after league.

Long story short, shortly after we started, he said he would play me a race to 5 for $100. Myself, knowing he never would, and that he was talking out of his ass... egged him on the whole night for the money bet after league.

After league was done and i was sitting up at the bar drinking a beer, facing the other direction, he cold cocked me in the face. Then he tried to walk out of the bar. I ended up throwing him up against the bar wall, then he fell to the ground. I had him pinned ready to go at it and my buddy pulled me off of him...

About a year later, we were back to talking decently.... And my game had improved quite a bit... He tells me that he thinks part of the reason i calmed down and got better at pool was because of that semi-fight we got into.

And that makes me LOL whenever i think about it. Because he is a douche.

In my early league days I cant believe how many players would tell me not to mess around with English because it just makes you miss your shot!

I got my own table, practiced English, and went up the rankings while everyone scratched their head.

The worst is when someone intentionally steers you into a bad situation; most of us who have paid our dues have probably had that happen a few times.

More often than not when I have received bad advice it was from someone who was genuinely trying to be helpful. The most recent was when someone told me I needed to join the modern era and get an LD shaft. That probably would have been good advice to a lot of people, but it ended up just being waste of 6 months for me. In retrospect, I guess I should say that time spent learning something is not time wasted, and I definitely learned something.

You know, that advice can work in both directions. Guys will also tell you to use english on every shot, like the pros do. I see more players guilty of excessive english as opposed to not enough.

"If you want to get better you have to gamble"

I personally agree that gambling and getting better don't have to go hand in hand, but I also feel that everyone is different when it comes to desire.

For the life of me, I can't understand how anyone enjoys rack after rack of 9 ball without getting bored out of their minds unless they are gambling.

If it wasn't for straight pool I'd have to have some money on the games I play in order to maintain interest.

For lots of these younger players who haven't found the benefits of straight pool, I sort of understand why they say that about gambling and getting better.

I mean, 9 ball is like poker, how many hands can you enjoy when you're not playing for something. It just gets plain old dull.

Sure, thats why more people are guilty of over use than under. Also why lots of guys cant stroke straight. Excess english develops a cross stroke thats tough to shake. If 9 ball didnt take off the way it did, burying straight pool....we would probably all stroke straighter.

"That's a nice case you made for yourself, you should make them for other people."

I know a few people with the attitude that you always use english. I have a friend that says you should try to throw most cuts in with some outside. I think that frame of mind is pretty damn dumb, but it works for him. I do see way too many beginners trying fancy english shots well before they even know what the tangent line is, and having no idea how the english will react with the object ball, or how the cueball will come off of the rail. People need to get a sound foundation of fundamentals and principles before they start tryng to wire the cue ball with all kinds of spin.

The worst piece of advice I have ever received was from someone who said "Braden, that Scruggs hustler for $400 is not worth that price. Buy that Predator over there for $900." That rotten, no good motherfu.......well, I digress.
