Balancing pool with fitness

I am 55 yrs old and just recently started working out and losing some weight to appease the doc. i am noticing that my break has more pop, but also have noticed that my finesse game is suffering. has anyone else experienced this?

If you just started, your body will be very sore for a few days after a workout. Over time, you don't get as sore from workouts.

I remember when I started 20 yrs ago, I couldn't sit on the toilet after leg days, or shift into reverse on my stick shift car after chest days. Pool was tough only after leg days, because I'd be "shaky" in my stance.

After doing that for a while though, it became no problem.

Each person is different, and their recover time is different. And as stated above, even within each person, their own recover time will vary over the years for many factors. Make sure to fuel your workouts with lots of meat and also to sleep well to repair your muscles.

Actually no. I really believe resistance training is good for any age. Resistance training when done correctly improves concentration, balance, strength, and burns calories throughout the day even when at rest. I will be 64 in a couple of months and have been using resistance training, among other things, in my routine workouts at least three days a week for the last 4 years. I can eat whatever I want and as much as I want and my body weight stays between 159 lbs to 162 lbs. Resistance training speeds up your metabolism incredibly.

Sleep, protein, fruits, vegetables, and low carbs. Even fats are ok.

Lol, that's a good point. He could wake up in the evening, fresh and he does play for long periods of time but he answered that, as long as he can see the money, he doesn't get tired. So you suggesting that he sleeps during the day? I'll ask him to see.

I think he seperates the two by going to bed... then he starts again the next evening and plays until the morning again.

Good man. Nice gains. Please please please add resistance, free weights are best, even if it is light, After 2 weeks you will not believe how much your metabolism speeds up. Only two things in life are real magic: exercise and compound interest.

thank you sir. had planned on adding some light resistance/high reps at some point soon.

Most of the guys I've come across who were shooting lights out looked like they'd been living in a cave, or a bar, for the last 3 months.

At the high end, being in shape and healthy are benefits... but most the health types never put the time in that the truly obsessed players do.

I would love to shoot lights out. Guess I'll have to stop going to the gym if I want to do that. Sorry. Don't follow your logic.

Hell I'm just hoping to shoot with the lights on! :thud::thud::sorry:

It's just an observation. For some, to afford the time and expense of playing a lot, they need to spend a lot of time in bar, clubs, out of the sun on their practice tables. Often that leads to a fair bit of drinking and/or drugging. Not in all cases, but it's pretty common.

Do any of you work out regularly and practice pool? How do you balance the two? I'm trying to work out 5 days a week and shoot pool 6-7.

I think the two viable options are first-thing morning workouts or before bed workouts. With pool sometime in the evening.

So my concern is that a morning workout before work makes the pool that evening way less productive. Or should I just keep this up and I might adjust to the routine and it'll be like normal.

The other option is to do the workout after the evening pool session, but then I'm so hungry after the workout and gotta eat a big meal like right before bed and I'm not sure that's a great idea either. But maybe? This way I might get a better pool session in, if I get a good nights sleep...

I know I would be able to put way more into my pool game without the workouts, but I'm not willing to give that up for pool. So it's gonna be a challenge, but that's the fun part!

You should be able to work out in the morning without it affecting your play in the afternoon.

In order to work out, go to work, and play league, various games , and practice it takes time. I'm fortunate that my kids are grown and on their own and my wife has no problem with me being out of the house. I am at the gym at 5am 3 or 4 days a week to get it all in and in bed by 8pm on the nights before gym days. It's pretty structured but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Has anyone gone from not working out to working out and seed an improvment in their pool game.

No, never. I also never heard of it happening to anyone. Working out will never add a ball speed to your game.

However, if you are playing 20 hour sessions, it may make your drop off due to stamina and being tired not as bad. But 1000% it won't help you pocket any balls.

My game improved.
