Ball spotting question in 8 ball game.

Whether BCA rules or otherwise here is my question or scenario.

Playing 8 ball I shoot my called low ball into the pocket. During the shot the cue ball in turn knocks another of my low balls off the table.

The questions is does the ball knocked off the table get spotted or not. Also is it a foul or not so I know if I keep shooting.

Both balls stay down per BCAPL 8 Ball rule 2.7(2):


2-7 Continuing Play

1. Once groups are established, play continues with each player having their group as legal object balls. Balls in your opponents' group and the 8-ball are illegal object balls. When it is your inning, you continue to shoot as long as you legally pocket a ball on each shot. Object balls pocketed in addition to the called ball remain pocketed. Your inning ends if you do not legally pocket a ball.

2. Jumped object balls and illegally pocketed balls are not returned to the table but do count in favor of the player with that group.

To make things confusing for you here's the conflicting APA rule on balls on the floor:

6. Balls on the Floor
- If the 8-ball is knocked on the
floor, it is loss of game. Object balls knocked on the
floor are spotted. If the spot is taken, the ball is placed
on a line directly behind the spot as close as possible.
Knocking a ball other than the cue ball on the floor is
not a foul. It might occur that a player pockets his ball
while simultaneously knocking another ball on the floor.
In this situation, it is still his turn and the ball is not spotted
until he misses. If the ball on the floor is one of
the shooter's balls, it is spotted when the shooter has
pocketed all of his other balls or misses.

So what happens if I break, an object ball is thrown off of the table and I pocket other balls? Is it pocketed or spotted, and do I lose my turn?

In the APA, playing 8 ball, it would still be your turn. If you only made one kind of ball you would have to be that off the break. If you made one or more of each, you would have your choice. You would begin shooting. When you miss the ball that went on the floor is spotted. If it is your ball, it would spot right after you pocket your last ball (so you better play position for it). If it was the opponents ball, it spots when you miss. No foul.

Thanks! I had that actually happen last night, playing the assistant league operator and he called foul (BIH and ball pocketed). I didn't know any better, I've only played 5 matches in the APA league so far, so I went along with it. I still beat him though:grin:
