Bankers --- Spaeth or Bugs?

I noticed alot of guys from the Cinci area are posting here and was wondering if any of them knew how strong Ken Anderson's bank game was. I saw him one time when he was just knocking some banks around and he seemed pretty good. Don't know anything about how good he was for the money or when playing against other good bankers.

Maybe you mean Donny Anderson?

Bank players

There is one bank pool player not being mentioned and wouldn't be by most people because his name is/was not well known except by hall of fame type bank players---and none of them has a winning record against him. His name is Vernon Elliott. Arguably Eddie Taylor and Bugs may have had a slight--maybe, but neither of them would have given weight and played him at banks. Ask Freddie or Truman Hogue. I have never heard of anyone matched up against him coming out on top. To my knowledge he never played Eddie Taylor and although attempts was made to play Bugs while Vernon was in Detroit the match up never happened. I'll ask Vernon to be sure. Before his health deteriorated no one came looking for Vernon. Check out his bank shots in Freddie's book "Banking With the Beard" that no one else could do including Eddie Taylor.

Nobody would play in Chicago

For at least 25 yrs no one came to Chicago and played Bugs 1pkt or banks even. The only exception was Gary Speith, who played Bugs a couple of sets at the Billiard Cafe after he won the Chicago Bumps bank tournament. (Bugs was in jail and did not play in the tourney) Gary won the first set, was deluged with bets, tripled up and lost the second and final set. The only other even action Bugs got around Chicago in those days was Artie Bodendorfer and myself. I would periodically take some cheap shots at Bugs for 30 or 40 a game, even. Mostly Artie would get 9 to 8, but once in awhile they would play 1pkt even. If anyone would have come to Chicago to play Bugs either game, they could have won an uncountable amount of money. There were two more exceptions that I had forgotten about. Efren beat Bugs for 30k when Bugs was a little past his prime, and Allen Hopkins beat Bugs at a time when his diabetes was just beginning to run rampant. A younger, healthy Bugs might have reversed either of those two decisions.

Yes Bill, it was Donny. I thought of Ken who was the quarterback for the Bengals I think. I thought Donny played banks mostly but didn't know how good he was against other good bankers. Did you ever see him play?

Thanks Freddy for the info....btw the book is doing great and everyone I've lent it to has sung praises about it! I really like the part about Bugs banking a ridiculous 8-and-out when playing 1p....

When you said for 25 years, which years were you referring to?

Also, I'm going to be in chicago for the summer....where would you recommend me sweating or learning some bank pool? One of my friends suggested Red Shoes cos that's where Piggy plays out of.

Yea, I grew up in Cincinnati in the fifty's and sixties and knew all these guys. Played most of them at Western Bowl where they all hung when not at Mergards or Ernst's. Kenny was a monster at all games but would have been around to play Gary's Dad more than Gary. That would have been Joey and he too was a monster at all games!

I meant Donny not Kenny Anderson

I must be getting senile. I read your post and saw Kenny so responded w/ Kenny when I meant Donny!

Red shoes is basically a 1p and banks kind of room. Tell John and john Alex said hi.

Also try Chris' billiards, they have good players and all kinds of games.

I probably won't be familiar, but what was your grandfather's name btw?
I could be mistaken, but I believe huckster's grandfather was the great Don Willis, whom I am sure you have heard of.

Hi Alex,

I am already going to Chris's for sure (been there many times actually), but I will check out Red Shoes as well I think!

Thanks for the info JDB --- unfortunately my excuse is that I am too young in years to have heard of him....I will do some research on him though!

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound condescending. I am sure you will find a wealth of information on Don Willis. If not, search the archives here as I am sure there are quite a few stories. Good luck!

Bank Pool on the banks of the Ohio ca. 1960 - 1964AD

Ranking the Bank players in Cincy at the time
'Real' Bank pool was 15 ball rack, safe break, a scratch
costs you a bank

playing the above game for enough money to matter

1. Gene "Clem" Metz - tho known mostly for his onepocket game,
local buzz had it that Eddie Taylor was the only white player who
could have beaten Clem at Bank, and even the Bear didn't have
a big edge - banking speed had alot to do with why Clem was such a
good onepocket player. And his drive and 'killer instinct' was legendary

2. Don Anderson - banked the balls as well as anybody except that guy from Knoxville

3.(?) Joe Favre - known as 'Phillipino Joe' - nobody had a clue what
that nickname was to foreshadow

the level of Bank ability in southern Ohio, Kentucky, and Tenn was well known among road players who avoided Bank as much as if in Chicago

For bank pool, Red Shoes is a must. The two owners, John and John, both play banks well. Tell them I sent you.

Larry, was Mergards the joint upstairs near Peebles corner, or was it the one on the ground floor in a stand-alone building? I played in both rooms in the early '60s, but I can't remember which was which... Thanks~

Doc

But I hung in Mergards in th '60s - it was the one story place, part of a bowling alley - one of 4 or 5 Mergards establishments in the Cincy area,
they had 10(?) National 9 footers with ball returns,
very rare in those days

the second story room was 3 doors past Gilbert right at Peebles Corner,
also part of a bowling alley - they had one of the 2 or 3 Billiard tables
in public rooms in town - think the name was Schmidts(?)

Guys,

I've been watching some videos of Spaeth and Bugs, and I think that both are amazing players with their own strengths.

I just wanna know, for all the bankers out there -- especially the midwesters -- who do you think had the better game?

For those who knew them and their games, who won more regularly when they matched up?
Nothing against Gary but Bugs in his prime was the better banker,,, In the history of banks really the only one better than Bugs was Eddie Taylor,,, I don't think any of the old school bankers would disagree with that Eddie Taylor was the best and Bugs was 2nd,,, after that it's up for debate but I'd say John Brumback(only man with 3 banners at Derby)

Maybe not the best, but don't count out Efren in a banks tourn.
