I just got banned from the room I played the BCA league. I said the owner was stealing the prize money by keeping most of it and got a life time ban. guess the owner agreed and didn't want the rest of the league players to find out.

I have banned myself from the pool room I have played for many years for similar reasons... I just would give my money to another pool room owner.
I'm lucky that there are many poolrooms in my area ;)

Or, it could be, that like many poolplayers, someone might have been talking out of their posterior with NO knowledge of what was really going on.

:D :D :D

Until you provide proof, which you failed to do when making a VERY serious claim in your first post, I have no choice but to assume this is the case.

I am assuming you showed up to the BCA Nationals to compete, and the powers-that-be in the BCA said "Wha-Wha-WHAT? You're not even in the BCA! Who have you been giving your money to????"

How could he keep it a secret? No other players passed third grade math?

We are talking about pool players you know. :D

Yea, we are lucky some can count to 8 nowadays for one pocket games! No wonder Straight Pool is dying...

personally i wouldnt have said anything in that spot(i dont think), right or wrong I just dont like to get involved in the fallout from whistle blowing(most of the time)-even if someone is taking my $$$ to a certain level, but thats just me, however I respect your integrity, i'm gonna assume your right, I have no reason not to, the following story is why part of why I believe you:

Now when its big $$$ then things change fast-I bust out my whistle too, perhaps your deal was big $$ too, I dont know. however 2 weeks ago I caught a vendor who I do about $80,000 to $120,000/week in business with for the past 5 years or longer. They tried to pull a move on the priceing(which is a contractual agreement), they were over charging me $5800 on 3 invoices-above the contracted price  , I usually dont look at this stuff but somehow I caught wind of it and I had a audit done and sure enough they were putting the wood to me. I busted out my whistle because of the amount of money, then I took about $50,000/week in biz away from them to other vendors, I still have to do some biz with them. Here is my point that valaditates our stories: With the economy the way it is were gonna see alot of people do bad shit out of necissity that they might not do otherwise. I'm implementing new auditing proceedures in my business's and personal life to to protect myself from getting robbed more than usual.

Again, I'm not knocking you for saying something, I respect you for saying what you did. I just wouldnt have got involved-in that situation but I dont know all the details either to judge it 100%, I have been barred from alot of pool rooms over the years for fighting, talking shit, you name it I did it and it sucks to lose a poolroom to go to.

I hope you can get things worked out for yourself, or even better protect your friends so they dont get robbed too and all leave that pool room, take the biz else where, F'em for stealing,

good for you,

Most of the players in the league are new and don't play in tournaments/leagues. They didn't know that leagues can pay trips etc to BCA and others win some $$. A great deal of the BCA leagues here in Canada pay most of the prize money. He told the guys in this league he has rent and bills to pay and they get free pool and a good time for their 14$ during league night. Thats why he is only paying out 7000 of the 21000 in entry fees. I thought holding a league and having all those customers would be a good way to help pay bills. Taking 66% of entry and all the extra customers pays all the bills. I have a table at home so no lost to me. I have played in these league before and didn't ask about the prize breakdown for this league... thought it was standard prize breakdown. I quit the league and told the others players that this wasn't the norm. Holding the league helps him, taking the prize money is greed.

You can teach the new players more than just how to hit a ball.

I'm leaving my league after everything is over because I think I'm getting ripped as well. I'm not the only one either.

I know they have to make a living and they have a right to, but to bring in the money our LO does he doesnt pay out much. I'm not going to call out anyone, I'm just taking my money elsewhere next session or possibly just wont even play at all. I dont need the APA and they dont need me.

Since he's going to have to steal more money now to recoup the loses he will suffer from your banishment, aren't you really the one to blame? :p

While it may appear that way on the surface, I think if you knew all the facts, you would find that your LO is not getting rich off the players. It costs a good bit of money to buy an APA franchise, and continues to cost to run one. Money that goes to the national office, local staff, overhead expenses (can you imagine how much gas it takes to make the rounds of all the rooms in a league every week?), trophys, Vegas trips for the winning teams, etc. Most APA LO's make a living, but do it because they love the game, not to get rich.

Amen Steve...I know for a fact, that to even make a SMALL living ($40K+), an APA L.O. must have at least 100+ teams playing ALL YEAR. These figures are based on actual figures from 15 yrs. ago. Surely they are significantly higher today, with today's costs. Do the big operators, with hundreds of teams, make a good living? Sure...but they work hard for it, and MOST of their players are quite happy!

Scott & Steve,
I think it is a different situation. He's talking about BCA and I think the local room owner sponsoring the league taking a bigger cut than is normal for a BCA league.

This league/room owner would only need 30 teams to make over 40,000$ year. 100 teams would pay him 138,600$ year. Now the APA guys should be sick. 10 teams gave him 14,000$

Please break down the math for us, so we can see how you arrived at these numbers.

(Grabs popcorn, sits back, and waits for the hilarity to ensue.)

Well, I used the number 10 Russ so it would be easy math. Not really, we did have 10 teams. Each team has 5 players and we pay $14 each per week for 30 weeks.

So first, 10 x 5 = 50 weekly players x entry $14 = $700 weekly
Second 700 x number weeks playing 30 = $21000
Third, the amount he is paying out... He showed me the payouts $7700

Profit/ripping off of prize money $13,300. Close enough to $14,000 for me.

If he flipped the numbers it wouldn't have been so bad, but 63.3% I believe is too much. Since you are probably billing the Gov at least 63% higher than you could bill a normal company this number might be low to you.

Did you have time to get the popcorn?

My whole point is, get ready for it, I think he is taking too much money. The fact that you can't figure out or believe how he could make the much proves my point!!! He must be really taking too much from the league.

when you play in events, where-ever, just being a player is best. Not inside the business mind of the operators. If you're that way minded, set up your own comp but can you? I dunno, you're probably right. Did you you say it outright to management or were overheard. Thats different. But you've blown your chance to play there. If you're ok with that, so be it. Otherwise. learn from it.
