hello all, i would like some opinions about a bar box versus a 4x8, i always play tournaments/leagues on a 3 1/2' x 7', i currently have a 3 1/2'x7' at home and going to buy a new table, some tell me that the 4x8 will help my game, some say it will hurt my playing, so i dont know what to do, i do know that i want a tighter table than a valley, would appreciate any opinions/suggestions ....thanks jeff

That's What I'm Known For.... My THINKING

I grew up playing on 4'x8' and 3 1/2'x7' tables and I prefer the 4'x8'.
With that being said, most tournaments are on 4'x9' or barboxes, so if you don't have room for a 9' table, I would try to become a barbox EXPERT if I were you.

( this thinking may be completely wrong and an example of why I do not make many pool related posts ) :)

I think my import 4X8' with tough pockets is harder to play on a regular gold crown.

I have a 4 x 8 table, and the pockets are generous, but not as easy as a bar box. I use an Aramith bar box cue ball to practice with, I think that combination is fine. The problem I see with most people that have a table at home, is they practice with the cue ball that came with the table, then they can't understand why they miss easy shots on the bar box. I will probably get flamed for this, but I think the Aramith bar box cue ball is different enough to change the way practice affects your game.

This is just my opinion, and I am sure that others will disagree. I am not a very technical pool player, but I like to spin the ball around the table. The shaft I use and the cue ball, seem to make a difference.

I would go for the 8 footer if not enough room for a 9ft., because I would want to put up some beads and and play some straight pool , 14.1 on a 7 footer just don't cut it, but can be enjoyed on a 8 footer.

Diamond bar table

I'd get the Diamond 3.5x7. It isn't really a bar table, it has considerably tighter pockets and you can make pockets as tight as you want on any table. You don't want them super tight though, just noticeably tighter than the tables you compete on. The thing is that the traffic is a lot different on the seven footer, eight footer, and nine footer. You need to play shape on the table size you are going to compete on. The suggestion about getting the cue ball you compete with to practice with is also excellent.

Well

if you gamble at all, I would suggest getting the same size table as what you gamble on. Getting the 'kinks out' from one size to another can be expensive.... LOL

man i'd go for the bigger table with tighter pockets. playing on a bar box with bigger pockets isn't hard at all after playing on a tight bigger table. but i do think you should play with a barbox cueball when you practice though. the cueballs bigger and it'll really effect the way you play possition

I think that you should go for the 4x8. You'll have more enjoyment playing other games that you cannot play on the 7 footer. Games like staight pool and one pocket. If you're not into one pocket you will someday and then you'll be glad you have the bigger table.

IMO-I would go bigger. For me it's easier to adjust from bigger to smaller than from smaller to bigger. This is an opinionated issue, you will get lots of different answers here. Good luck with whatever you get.
