Bar stick or not?

It really depends on what you mean by softer and the quality of the house cue shaft wood. The thicker shaft transfers more energy to the cue ball, actually hits harder than a thinner shaft. However it also has a duller deader sound and feel to it which some people equate to a softer hit. Changing the ferule from a typical house cue ferule to a hard ferule can often give someone all of the ping they want. However if you like ElkMasters I am going to make a guess that you would be quite happy with a house cue with a factory ferule and very slight retaper.

One thing I found recently with house cues is that the factory glue under the ferules had failed on a bunch of them. They seemed tight but slight pressure took them off. I found blue chalk between the shaft and ferule on about a third of the house cues I redid for a local hall. Not a big deal but be aware that you may have to fix that once. This happened with several brands of house cue and I have forgotten which ones it was now. Sorry about that.

Thanks. I believe I'll order a Valley with elk master and Dufferin with the Le pro and see how they play. The Dufferin has the 12.5 tip radius....I like that too.

One more question

As I stated before, the Lucasi bar cues (according to the Seyberts website) are actually two piece cues with a pin and glued together. Does anyone know if the Valley and Dufferin are the same. I would think a solid piece of maple would be better???

Are you sure you mean radius and not diameter?

You're right. My bad. I guess I got all caught up in the idea of buying more pool sticks......just what I need.

I have a schmelke one piece house cue in my basement for my home table. It's nice. I may order a few more, in different weights.

I found an old two piece Dufferin at a pawn shop with the pin in the shaft that rolls absolutely straight. I don't know if all their wood was like this cue but I was impressed that an old $10 cue hanging out in a pawn shop would roll straight. It plays pretty good, spins the ball nicely.

can't say

I haven't noticed any two piece Valley or Dufferin cues, talking about a permanent joint near where the joint would be on a two piece cue. I guess verifying before you buy is a good idea though. The ones at the local hall are pretty new but I don't buy any myself.

house cues are great when you find a good one. One piece cues feel good because all of the feedback from the hit goes straight from the wood to your hand. The problems I have with house cues is that some of them have a really fat taper and I can't use a closed bridge. With the fat taper it takes me longer to get a feel for the deflection.

With a two-piece, there are pins and disconnection so the great feeling is lost. The great thing about two-piece is that it is easier to travel with. However, I find that the players that have a good stroke could careless about the cue. The make that cue ball run like there's no tomarrow with any cue.

Larry Price won the Derby Bank Championship this year supposedly playing with a Players sneaky pete.

great experiment

i'll try almost anything once. i love the one piece cue but could not find a cue with multi growth rings, so i got a 20 plus growth ring shaft from hightower, found me a valley bar cue. i used one of my wood pins to put the valley butt and the shaft together using wood glue i made myself a one piece cue. i believe it hits as good as any cue i have seen. chuck starkey
