Me playing against another player as good as me:: about 3 minutes per rack.

Me playing against the average bar person:: about 6 minutes.

Average bar person playing average bar person:: closer to 12 minutes--over half the time nobody is trying to make a shot but just talking.

Depends on the opponent, if playing with an equally offensive or very skilled player the games are quick, most under the 5min mark. If the opponent plays defensive or just slow I'd guess tha average time doubles
Shot clocks are the greatest innovation in the pool world, too bad they are a little tricky to apply on small local tourneys

Depends on the rules of the game.
Open after the break for me maybe 5 minutes or less.
Take what you make on the break 9 minutes or less. Maybe more if the table is breaking slow. (more safeties).

Here are some results for average minutes per game from the streamed 8-Ball matches at some fairly recent events on 7-footers:

• 2016 US Open 8-Ball Championship -- 5.7 min./game for 197 games (range 4.1 - 7.1 for the 13 matches).

• 2016 Poison Challenge, Van Boening d. Hohmann -- 5.2 min./game for the 41 games.

• 2016 Tiger Challenge, Morris d. Bustamante -- 3.1 min./game for the 38 games.

• 2016 OB Challenge, Bergman d. Deuel -- 5.7 min./game for the 37 games.

• 2015 US Open 8-Ball Championship -- 6.2 min./game for the 233 games (range 3.3 - 8.5 for the 17 matches).

• 2015 Kamui Challenge, Shaw d. Deuel -- 4.0 min./game for the 41 games.

• 2015 Tiger Challenge, Van Boening d. Dechaine -- 3.7 min./game for the 34 games.

• 2015 US Bar Table Championship -- 6.5 min./game for the 144 games (range 4.3 - 10.9 for the 19 matches).

So, obviously, it varies a lot from match to match, even in top-level events. The average minutes per game for all 765 of these games was 5.7. Excluding the challenge matches, it was 6.1.

If you're playing in a tournament match, I would consider it to be disrespectful and may even be unsportsman like conduct to use/check constantly unless its on your break.

in the present time with cell phones. could take forever.

On a related note, which do you think extends a game longer deliberate safeties or misses?

When I schedule a tournament I use 6 - 8 minutes to estimate the tournament length.

Ah ha!...so you're the guy responsible for those 4:00 a.m. matches! ;)

The time for any one game mostly depends on the layout after the break and the skill levels of the players. I've played leagues for decades and for the 16 games we play, it usually takes about 3 hours total on average, so that's 10-12 minutes per game. Remember that getting started can take as long as the game itself takes, depending on who's out taking a smoke break, getting a beer in a lousy service environment, etc.

I put 5 min. But I was thinking from break to end of game. If you add in racking, breaks, ect, which you do if you take the 100 games into total time for all the games, it will be a different number.

I put 5 min.

I've timed myself before against myself in practice.

A money game I'd go w 9 min.

I don't have the patience for long games. One reason league play drives me nuts.

I put 9 minutes as if you consider racking and such, not just the game it self. I think it might be slightly shorter.

As for the Cell phone thing, if you are there to play pool, put the damn cell phone away, and play. If you are playing me, gambling or just for fun, it doesn't matter, you will be playing alone if you hold up the game looking at that thing. If what you are looking at all the time is that important, you shouldn't be trying to play pool. There is nothing more aggravating than someone holding up the game due to their addiction with their phone.

For the averages in post #6 (for top players), the elapsed time for each match was measured from the lag until the winning ball was made (or conceded), so it includes time for racking and timeouts.

The whole smoking issue in my league is a whole nother story. Shit, I made my captain give the team to me this upcoming session & forever if he wants me to shoot with him because 99% of the time he is outside smoking. And it's not just him, half the league outside so much it's like a side game.

A one-size-fits-all ban has side effects. I argued this point as the force-backed bans began to take over privately 'owned' bars and halls. That's why I posted about the actual time it really takes to play games in such places.
