Bar Tournaments

there are 3 a week that i play in and usually do quite well. by no means am i a shark, but im not a banger either. they are handicapped to make it pretty even but i just got home from one tonight and need to blow some steam off on this. tonight was a good turnout as usual, a full 16 man bracket at $8 a man. a bunch of B players and a couple of C's, and 1 A player. my problem is that i met that A player after losing the match to get into the hotseat, and we it was a race to 4. now how does that work? an A player and a B player in an even race! i mean come on! he won the match 4-2. im sorry if im a little off topic here but i really needed to vent. usually the handicapping is fair but that was just a bad judgement on the bar owners part. i got third and made my money back and then some so i should be happy but yeah its just the principle of the thing. i will be back again next week to play again. just needed to vent!!

3 a week? That's alot of pool you're playin'.....keep playin' the A players even and you may just be one before long. A miss equalling a loss should make you play better/smarter. Get him next week!! I no longer play in leagues, but when I did some of the guys I play in these tourneys had to spot me 2 games in league (I was an APA5 in 8ball) - I have to play them even or am spotted one game (only 3 guys go to 5, that I know of). But, the shorter race is kind of like a spot too. If the race were to 9 or 11....I'd have a MUCH tougher time. I like that I have to play really well (for me) to advance. :p

the tournaments are 9ball on monday, 8 ball on tuesday and 9 ball on friday. monday and tuesday are a twent minute drive but well worth it considering the full field. friday is in town and usually a better tourny vecause its stiffer competition. on wednesdays im on a travelling league and only play every other week when its in my town and thursdays is another league. i try and play as much as possible.

SHEESH...every weekday is accounted for (well, every other Wed.), and lemme guess, Sat. and Sun. your at the poolhall working on your game?! LOL. I practice (snooker) with a buddy every other week at the poolhall, and "try" to play on Thurs. nites....that's it. BTW, the snooker table makes playing on the occasional 9 footers in tourneys look like barboxes ;)

no saturday and sunday are family days except this weekend on sunday there is a b and down 9 ball tourny for 10 a spot that will have some stiff competition

We're talking about people who play B speed on up basically "crashing" a bar bangers tournament to win the 50-75 dollar prize. Its not fair, and its not right. I did it for several years, and looking back as I got older... wish I hadn't...Let the bar bangers have their tournaments, and go to the pool hall.Chuck

Chuck,

Most of the bars in Vegas advertise their weekly events in a local magazine. Most of them also have a marques out front advertising the tournament. If they truely wanted the event to be for "bangers", silence would be golden! Jose Parica didn't just accidently walk into KJ's. He knew about the event. Obviously there are other scenarios where the above is not true. However, if there is an event within a hundred miles, the chance of me not knowing about it is slim. In the end, the TD can simply ask the "shark" not to play. Only a fool would demand to be allowed in. In that case I would do as DaveK suggested. Give the "shark" a gift certificate. The gift and a request not to return should be enough:bash: !

I now see the confusion.... You are talking about Vegas....... :D
Im referring to your average pub tournaments around the country.... not a well known bar in a tourist area like Las Vegas who advertises in magazines etc.

Hello stick 8: In 2 pool leagues I play in we go by % for our averages. We do not run a handicap but the averages are there anyway we go by games played & games won so if you played 6 & won 6 your 100 / 6 - 5 833 / 5-4 800 / 6-4 667 6-3 / 500 6-2 333 etc. So with your system what would you classify as a 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 etc.
Also when they talk about A players and B players and C players what are they talking about. Also when you play your tournament if a 5 plays a 2 how many games are played? If anyone else has any input I would like to hear that also.
Thanks

my system i use numrers to rate a player 2-3-4-5-6-7-, if a player of the 5 rating playes a 4, it the one that wins there games first 5 to 4, understand if it is a7 playing a 4 it is 7 to 4 and so on, i charge $20 to play and if you win $50 bucks or more you go up 1 rating say a 4 wins $75 bucks they go upto a 5 for 3 tournys and if they have not won $50 or more in 3 tournys they come back to 4!!same system fo 10 yr and my players like it we shoot only 9BALL. pm me if i can help STICK:thumbup:

Our once a week barbox tourn. is at a well established C&W bar (been there for ever). Over the years we've had from 10 to 32 players each week, no hdcp. race to 1 dbl. elimination. Bar adds 75$ for 12 and 100$ for 16 or more players, 5$ entry, master, bangers, all welcome. If you win one week you can't win the next, some drink some don't, simple, not saying that would work everywhere, but, it works here. I also play in a handicap tourn. on 8' once a week, there both fun, but WAY different. As far as the barbox tourn. goes, hell, I'll play anybody in a race to 1 5$ tourn.

Once upon a time there used to be a lot of cheap bar tournaments in my area, but they've all disappeared. When I've asked the bar owners why, they all say the same thing, the "sharks" would come in, get a glass of water or one $2 beer and then scare everyone else away....it wasn't good for business.

I'm sure this is a common problem, so I'm wondering what ideas there are to manage this. I guess you could have a B & C tournament, but I think handicapping would be too much trouble.

I feel like I've seen a thread on this before, but I searched and couldn't find it.....

Thanks for your help.
Here is the recent thread on this that you were thinking of.
