This is one of those really simple ideas you hear about that could wind up making its creator some good money.

Very cool but the patent pending is likely just for show... I have one from the 70s that is almost identical.... However mine is worn out and the picture looks like it's good quality... I'll be buying a new one =D

Thanks for the post

Pretty cool looking.

But everything is a Pop Top or Twist Off these days.

What would it be used for?

You're obviously not a patent attorney... FYI patents don't last forever... If an owner lets a patent laps and fails to keep it current then the next person can try and acquire it hence the "Patent Pending"... Could be the case here...

You are correct that I am not a pattent attorney but as an inventor I have done extensive research.... Patent Pending costs nothing as it signals intent to some degree... What do you see that would earn a patent based on the original design that would differentiate itself? There is nothing materially different in purpose or design that is worth the investment or that will not have the patent office kicking it... Patent research is where the costs really lie... I have TALKED to several attorneys over several products at this point and can wager this one will not get a patent.......

You need to do more research...My brother is a patent attorney No1. ....No.2 there are design elements of this that are indeed patentable... Consult your attorney(s) as I have done mine...

Just make sure your brother isn't charging you by the hour.... Or maybe find another attorney.... If he can't tell you the 5 easiest ways that this could be 99% knocked off without violating patent law if someone owned it... He should have studied harder.... I'll buy one and am not interested in the product as a seller.... OHHH wait magic eight ball and bottle opener... I am in.... See you in court......

You can call him direct... 1-773-867-5309... His name is "J"

Obviously I am not an Attorney either but, what would those design elements be?

In Canada anyway, I thought that a particular design had to have a certain percentage of scientific difference to be able to qualify.

Its a Fuggin bottle opener man on top of an 8 Ball. Use a 9 Ball then.

I don't care anyway. If I get a tough twist off, I use a Bic lighter to pop it.

Not a ton of Science behind that design. Looks cool. Can sit on top of your Rec Room Bar.

Anyone with a Milling Machine and an 8 Ball can make that. Shit, a drill press and a file for that matter.

Probably make a better pocket marker than an opener anyhow.

Is the opening mechanism used within this design patentable?... Yes. I'm sure it's already patented.... Never said you'd get to own the patent but it is patentable... I want one just cause it'll look neat sittin on a table

What would it be used for?

I don't have any unopened ones here to check but I think
I still need my bottle opener for when I buy a case of Heineken.
I think Moosehead also requires an opener. I'll have to buy some today and check them out:).

This opener does indeed look cool. I would buy one or two.

I think it looks cool and will probably sell.

To patent it would be a complete waste of time and money whether it's a "valid" patent or not.

But if he/they want to throw a bunch of money out the window for nothing, it's not really anybody's business IMO.

<--------Holds and/or has held more than a dozen patents.

Not enough leverage. There's a good reason why bottle openers have at least a 4" handle: leverage. A "counter-mounted" opener gives you the leverage of 10 inches worth of bottle.

But, it's cool as a design/showpiece idea. I'd recommend replacing the screw heads with rubber feet so it doesn't scratch the counter top.

Not Yet Available

Dave Sheffield from Buffalo BottleCraft says these 8-ball openers will not be available for sale until September or October, and when they are they will be around $12 each.
