BCA entries appear to be way down---Rio effect??

You can keep your Non-Union Rat race, Cut Thought, mentality and I will stick with the Men & Women of the Union who brought this great nation the middle class, weekend, overtime, safety in the workplace, child labor laws, etc.......................................

Once upon a time unions had their place and protected workers so they got a fair shake. Nowadays things like child labour, minimum wage, overtime pay, and safety in the workplace have minimum standards set out by the government and laws. We do not need a union to stop children being used as dynamite mules in coal mines, we have laws that stop that practice. We do not need a union to make sure people are not paid $2/hr, we have laws that stop these things if they are made public.

Unions no longer protect the fair rights of workers, most unions these days push wages and benefits beyond fair market value and eventually cause the companies the union workers are employed by to become uncompetitive in the marketplace. The huge car manufacturer bailout not that long ago was caused by US car companies being unable to compete on the global stage because of unions that demanded too much. It was American tax payers that ultimately ended up subsidizing the unreasonable pay demands of those workers and that unsustainable business model. The costs of that bailout are far higher then the actual money those companies were given, the paperwork, bureaucracy, the interest on the money that the government itself had to borrow in order to hand it over, Americans paid for it all.

It is great that you are in a union, it is great that you are going to be sipping pina coladas on a beach in the Caribbean in your retirement, but when you are keep in mind that other people who are never going to be able to afford to be on that beach that helped subsidize your ability to do that because they were in a non-union job and not only "just" got paid fair market value but also had to chip in their share to help subsidize union jobs like yours.

I agree with you, take what you can get. But at least be honest and aware of what it might have cost others that you were able to have that quality of life for you and your family. Laugh at those in the rat race, think they are all stupid for doing what they do, but at the same time know that those rats helped put you where you are today.

Also understand, you are one of the last that will get to benefit from unions like you did. They will eventually collapse under the weight of the global economy, and when they fall they are going to take a large portion of the economy of the USA down with them and contribute to the eventual fall of your nation as a superpower. I hope you enjoy that pina colada, rest assured it is a costly one.

Many people are against people getting something they didn't earn. And if you are union, and not free market, it most certainly wasn't all earned. It was gotten through nothing less than legalized extortion and strong arming.

And as a result, everybody else has to subsidize the union worker's grossly overpaid salaries through the higher costs of goods and services. And many don't even have jobs because of unions because more and more companies and just going overseas to avoid dealing with unions and having to pay the union people more than they are worth.

This is how it should work (and how it does work outside of unions). If you don't like your pay or benefits with one company, you go work for another company. If one company can't attract the talent they need, they will start paying more to get better talent. Companies will pay according to the value that you bring to them. It is called a free market, and everybody ends up getting paid what they are worth. I know you may not be happy with the amount you end up getting paid, but it still is all you are worth, all you deserve, and all that you have earned. To extort more than that is theft.

What if all companies that used electrical workers all got together and said from now on they will no longer pay above $15/hr, and would only offer X benefits, and anybody that doesn't like it is fired? And you have no choice because you need a job and it is the only skill you have so you are stuck because all the companies agreed to it amongst themselves and there is nothing you can do about it. Well companies aren't allowed to do that, and workers shouldn't be allowed to band together and use strong arm extortion either.

I have to disagree with you Poolplaya9. Many of those big companies that are non-union are shipping many jobs overseas to save money, but are the prices of their products going down? NO!! The executives are just pocketing more money.
Unions put the money in the workers pockets. Which way would you prefer? Or are you one of those top execs?

CocoCowBoy brought up a very interesting discussion of the possibility of unions being the reason attendance was (maybe) down...

but I'm thinking that the State's stance on

Gay Marriage

or

Abortion

or

Gun Control

might also be effecting the sign-ups.
