BCA Open... what happened to the "Pearl"?

Anyone know the scoop on what happened to Earl in Vegas? Did he get the boot?

My highlights were:

Seeing Thorston play solid. He did not hang out at the Poker tables, or Splash bar like allot of other players. He was just there to play pool! Congrats to Thorston on a well played tournament!
Angel Paglia beating Ga Young to the B side. Kim needs to improve mentally.
Watching Charlie Williams practice/play. Tiffany Nelson beating Jeanette to the b side. Tiffany Nelson and Janns are players to watch for.
Pottier and Kawabata battle it out Hill/Hill.

Oh and the Bialagio Buffet of course!

!

Earl gave up after Tony C had him 4-1 telling him "Well you're going to win the set anyway" Then at 10 -1 he just started blasting away at his shots not caring if he missed to put himself out of his misery.

Then for his next match vs Matlock, right before he told Corey "im just gonna go in there and lose and get out of here" He was down 5-0 within 10 minutes and lost 11-2 (pretty sure). Draw your own conclusions on that one. He also bad mouthed the eqipment and said he thought "This tournament is just too prestigious for me". I heard that he will never be invited back but it was a "hearsay source".

Hi Racer RX,

I was watching a match at the Cue Club when Earl walked in. His first comment was "I'll never play in that event again, the alternate break format sucks!". I would love to heckle Earl but, after speaking with Tony Robles and others, I'll temper my response. Way too many quality players were complaining both about the format and the cloth! Balls slipping and sliding. Very inconsistent conditions. The usual easy pockets at the BCA Pro event.

I didn't waste my money watching. If I had, I'd have kept my spectating to Tiffany Nelson. Way to go Tif!!!!!

The equipment was atrocious. One of the tables rolled off SO bad that a player scratched on the lag! The same table caused another player his set. This wasn't an "open" tourney where anyone can get in, it was an invitational. The players were the cream of the crop so to speak... the only way one of these guys is going to scratch on the lag is because of bad equipment...

Or too much deflection on his cue from not using a Predator. ;)

Actually - that particular player (the one that scratched on the lag) is sponsored by Predator...so I know that deflection wasn't the problem....LOL.

What Timberly said is true...there was one table that had a really horrific roll-off on it. I watched one match while I playing on the table next to it...and I just couldn't believe what was happening. A ball that was headed toward the first diamond on the side rail would change direction and head straight for the pocket...then change direction again and land on the end rail. It was bad. Definitely affected 2 separate matches that I saw.

And yes...I know the adage that both players had to deal with the same table....but that wasn't exactly true in this case. In a couple of games that I saw...the balls laid out differently...so that one players didn't have to deal with that end of the table....and the other player did after his break. It was kind of heartbreaking to watch.

I'm not surprised with any of this.Earl gets snubbed by the BCA Hall of Fame twice, so he snubs them and their tournament back.As great as Earl is, I say with the BCA members voting that he NEVER gets into the HOF.

Five time World Champ and greatest nine baller ever, get's snubbed from the BCA H.O.F and then he snubs them and their tournament back.Oh well, what comes around goes around.RJ

My good friend Jeff Kennedy said they did have bad rolls in them, when he played Lou Bertua(SP?) he lagged and it drifted and almost hit the rail. Go figure. Good tourney Jeff.

Yeah, in the side pocket, too!..... Well, I could be mistaken.

Yeah that was the most brutal table second from the right, first row, looking from the stands near the hall. The one on the far right was bad but not that bad.

Connelly tables...

Thanks for the reply, Racer Rx.

No reflection on the equipment as much as it is on the men behind the scenes! How in the world could they set up tournament match tables for the BCA Open and not make sure that they rolled evenly and were level?!

When I go to events where Diamond tables are set up, they seem to be installed correctly and roll evenly.

What kind of bar boxes were being used for the league tournaments?

i used to give strickland the benefit of the doubt, because of his commitment to perfection.

i realize now, he's just an *ss. no one should walk off the playing field, least of all because the conditions suck,,,and throw a match.

Hi JAM.

First, hope everything is OK with you two. This is the last year that BCAPL will be using the Valley Bar Boxes. The BCAPL will begin using Diamond Smart Tables in 2006. Gary Benson's High Country Promotions may be running the event as in the past. There was a lot of politicing going on. Gary and his crew do a great job.

I think Muxy may be refering to Machine Gun Lou Butera. I saw him a few days before the start of the event. Lou hadn't picked up a cue since last October. He was worried he might embarrass himself.

Earl is one of the greatest players of all time. Perhaps some day he will understand why the BCA HOF has bypassed him. He had another chance to show the Billiard World he does have class. He chose to continue his past antics. I doubt if he'll even be nominated next year. He may have to pass on before he'll be elected. What a shame!

At the worst, I'll see you guys at "The Stone".

His motivation is to quit may not be because he's been "snubbed" by the BCA Hall of Fame. Who really knows but Earl? Personally, I don't give a rat's ass about quitters anymore.

Btw, shouldn't the HoF be reserved for players who have ended their pool playing days? Woah....just had a thought....maybe that's why he quit, so he can now get his position in the HoF...lol

Once again, the fans get screwed. I wonder how much less money will come into the sport because of this incident? Added to the other b/s walk-offs and the cumulative results might be bigger than we think.

There were about 9,000 people at the ballpark Friday night. My wife and I dropped more than $40 while there. No players walked off the field and went home. Every player got paid. Every fan was entertained.

Ballplayers also make millions of dollars.

You got off cheap, ChefJeff! :p I can't go to Camden Yards in Baltimore and watch the Orioles for less than a C-note. Between the cost of the tickets, $5 boiled hot dogs, and the $5 beer, it can really add up.

It is difficult to compare baseball to pool, though. Even though Roberto Alamor thought it fitting to spit right in the face of an American League umpire several years back, the lucky lad still drew a nice hefty salary. Job security is uncertain in sports, but at least in baseball, there's always a paycheck coming in the front door.

Maybe Earl should have spit on the bad-rolling Connelly table. Now there's a thought! Only problem is Earl leaves Las Vegas with exactly what he came with, empty pockets and another happy memory on the tournament trail!

There's nothing worse than having somebody give us "free" tickets to a game as it usually cost us a lot. Beers are $5.25 now and the good brats are the same. Add some nachos, popcorn, etc. and bam!, you're right, a c-note is gone in no time.

I'll ask you the same question as I did AceHigh: Why is there always a paycheck for ball players?

I'll attempt an answer: Because people come and spend money to watch the players...(and here's the important part in this thread) to watch the players...PLAY.
