Help me out a bit here... multiple requests, questions.

nutshell, APA captain... multiple teams (as a result of splitting teams (re; 23 rule) only play 9 ball. no interest in 8 ball. thinking about exploring moving a team to BCA, or starting one.

2 questions for people that are in the know about both (APA/BCA)...

what are the primary differences? (handicaps, rules (9ball), team sizes, number of nightly matches, scoring?, etc.)

anyone aware of anything existing (BCA 9ball) in the Tampa Bay area of Florida? Who do I talk to about it ?

Some Of The Differences

1. No team limits on skill level, however depending on how the league is run you will be assigned a SL and the team with the lower total will get the difference each round. For Example if your league is using the 8 point system (1 point per ball) and your team has 5 SL 7 players playing against a team of 2 7's, 2 6's and a 5....your team total is 35 and your opponents is 31. You would give them 4 points per round.

2. In 8 ball, you normally have 5 players per team and you play each player one game.

3. There is no "Slop" in BCA. The ball you called has to go in the pocket you called

There are differences as well, but those are some of the big ones in 8 ball, I have no interest in 9 ball
 
I have played BCA 9 Ball league, and can tell you there is no handicapping...you play at your own merit, in head to head play. Which is to say there are teams, but the play is single. They follow BCA rules, and at least in the league I was part of, there were no squabbles. This may be due in part to the fact that we adopted 'rack your own' several years ago.

I enjoyed it very much. The only qualifying to go to the regionals or Vegas is that you have to have played x amount of games per session.

Check out CSI. They own BCA pool league. They also started a new league system, I think it's USAPL or something like that. Either way, you'd be smart to check out CSI & get some advice/info from them.
 
i currently play apa 8 and 9 and bca 8. there is no bca 9 ball in my area right now. bca format is as follows in my area:
8 on break not a winner - you can either spot 8 and play rack out with cue ball where it lies or re-rack and re-break.
8 on break and scratch may be a loss but i am not sure. i haven't seen it happen in over a year of play:eek:
you must call the ball and pocket and if you announce safe before you shoot you can mke your ball and leave poor postition for your opponent and it is his shot.
the table is open after the break no matter what goes down (which i feel is a much bigger advantage over no slop because i usually play 5,6,7's in apa 8 and slop almost never happens in those matches anyway - getting stuck with no shot on one group of balls happens much more frequently amoung the higher sl's)
cue ball fouls only. if you touch another ball you must ask opponent what he wants to do about moving it back or letting it rest. touch more than one ball and it's a foul or if the ball you move crosses the path of the moving cue ball is a foul.
the line up is 5 on 5. each player plays every man on the other roster once in a round robin format. you are assigned a skill level but it does not affect your indidvidual game. the total of your 5 sl's is added up and the team who's total is higher spots the lower team points each round.
your games are scored on a level of 0 to 12. 1 point for each ball made for the loser and 10 points for the winner. 12 points are given for a break and run. who breaks is determined by the pre-set round robin score sheet. you either break 2 or 3 times a night. the higher point total at the end of the night is the winning team. you do not score safes or innings. your handi cap is based on your pecentages.
these are pretty much the main differences. you don't get alot of long nights or nonsense that comes form weak players with low handicaps. in our division we have 16 teams with at least 6 players each and i think we have 2 or 3 sl 5's. on the other hand we have more 9's than i can count. the highest is a 10 (means you are playing perfect and never loose) we don't have one of those. it is definately a league for better players and will raise your game. it has for me and i enjoy more than my apa play. no phenolic break tips and jump cues are allowed. hope this helps.

Call the office yourself and talk to poeple who set the standards.

CueSports International: (702) 719-POOL (7665), it is the parent company to both BCAPL and USAPL.

Ask some someone who you can talk league bunisee to.

Thanks guys. Seems rediculous BCA or like leagues have little presense in an area like Tampa Bay, FL. Such a huge market, alot of players and dozens of venues. I just dont have the time & energy to start an entire league myself. I have a team or two to bring over but as far as spearheading the development of an entire league, just dont have the energy.

check out www.VNEAMVP.com that is the vnea / bca league in sarasota which is just south of tampa. they might have some info for you
