Bead.....Video

Great Job Mikey, glad to see you got the camera going again !!! you shorted the score on the first move though. when it was 7-7 before that scratch deduction you had 7-6 on the beads. I'm gonna have to watch you when we play LOL LOL

I made a video on how to use the bead scoring system. I hope everyone likes it. Remember, I do not do this for a living....LOL... I did my best.

Good video, Mike.

One thing I'd suggest, though, when explaining this system (which is the system I use, as you know). When explaining the whole foul / penalty / deducting a point situation, you might want to explain what an old-timer told me was called "pull-through." In other words, where you explain deducting a point (sliding a bead away from) the floating rack total, and then moving a bead over from the total score into the floating rack total, some newbies may scratch their head at that. The old-timer explained that to me differently, as "pulling a point 'through' your floating point total." In other, other words, pull a point from your total score into the floating rack total, and then pulling a bead from that floating rack total back into the unused beads. New users can actually "see" the point being deducted from the total score first, and moving that bead "through" the floating rack total.

It's just the opposite way of looking at it, but it seems to make sense to pull that penalty point from your total score, through the rack total, to the unused beads. When demonstrated, it "clicks" easier for new folks.

Good job on explaining the opening break fouls by using the opposite side of the unused beads. Lots of folks don't know to position the beads such that there's a little spare space at the end of the beads for this purpose.

Good stuff -- the more we can expose people to the use of the beads (they're real simple once you get to know 'em), the better. I HATE those score rollerwheels on the table, and avoid them whenever I can.

OMG..... I am so stupid...... I did push over only six instead of seven..... I was a little nervous. Should of practice what I was going to say. Did it all off the cuff. I wish I did not make that mistake but it is set & done with. Main thing is the point of how to do it. Hope it came over well. Thanks Stevie for your support.

Sean, I see your point. I explained it as simple as I could to make it easy to learn for the beginners. They can read your comment along with others to improve on it as much as they want. It is a good starting point. I also did a wheel score video but there was too much glare in the video. Will have to do it again.

Good work.
I learned the beads at JC,s in NY, they only had them on the two 5 x 10 tables in the back and my pop taught me how to use them years ago.

Another great video. I've always wanted to get some beads, but I really like all the stats I get by using the Billiard Buddy app on my iPhone.

I like the new camera, should of got one a long time ago. The Billiard Buddy is really nice, specially if one is into keeping all the stats for matches. Keeping stats has never interested me. As for the Beads, they really can give a game room a Classic look, if they are hung properly.

Thanks for doing this -- I've been thinking about writing something up for a while.

There are some tricks/techniques you might add if you redo it:

When I leave the table after a miss, I say something like, "6 left" so I know how many rack beads ought to be on the wire (9) after I finish adding to my score. Alternatively, I might say "9 gone". This allows my opponent to check my count and speak up if I got it wrong.

To get to the count on the table, I count by either 3s (if I'm tired) or by 5s if I can picture the lumps of 5 quickly. I'll also do the count when I figure my opponent is about to miss or play safe so I'll be ready with the score.

When moving beads, it's very useful to remember that if a group of beads has off-color beads on each end, it is either 6 or 11. If I have to give myself 13, that's often a group of 11 with two extras on one end or the other.

If you just miss an off-color bead being in a group, then you know that you can count by 5s. You can count from either end of the group.

I try to announce "one away" when I'm scoring a foul. If I run some and scratch after making a ball, I'll spot the ball up, say something like "seven left" then "one away" as I take one from my total and then maybe "five total for me".

I'm the impatient kind when it's my turn to shoot, so I get a little irritated when my opponent counts out 12 beads one bead at a time when there's obviously a group of 11 with hangie-down-dealies on each end plus one more bead. I try not to yell at slow scorers.

I have a different way of scoring fouls at the start of the game, but most people do it the way you showed. Mine is based on the fact that having -3 total looks just the same as 47 or 97.

Thanks Bob for the comments, all good points. These are all good points for each player to consider in adding these points to the way they have been doing it. I was reading another Thread (14.1---101) and (SpiderWebComm) commented (to leave a 1-shaft "gap" between the "last rack" beads and the "permanent score") to show the total ball run of the player at the table. That is a really good idea. Many times, I have had a hard time remembering what the score was before I started what ever run I was on. All good ideas and hopefully my short video will jump start some players to use the Bead system.

Before you slap the rack beads to the perma stack...you should also leave a 1 shaft gap to allow your opponent to slap both over. That's a class move to allow your opponent to verify the score before combining the beads. That also avoids scoring arguments.

Good point. I always will say the rack score out loud before pushing over the rack points to the total side. I will say: "you have 10 this rack that gives me four"..... Yes, your opponent needs to see the whole score before it is totaled up. It is the proper thing to do.

Mike, although you know I like my stats on the Billiard Buddy app, I do appreciate the tradition of scoring beads and will make a concerted effort to work your beads next time I'm over. That may be as early as tomorrow night if you want to play some.

I was hoping that you would come this way. That would be great.
