I would really like a dove tail bed cut from a piece of railroad rail.

Rock solid and heavy it would be the nutz.

You do realize that railroad iron is incredibly hard right?
The machining costs alone would make it cost prohibitive.
A better way to go may be to buy one of the currently readily available dovetails and have it hard-chrome plated.

You can fill the aluminum extrusion under the ways with cement. Taig does this on their lathes for extra mass and dampening properties.

Looking for rigidity and mass.
I think the rail road rail would fill the bill as a base.

Willie,

I believe that Lee at Brianna has steel dovetail bedway available. I don't know what type of steel he had them made from.

Wonder if railroad rails are easy to come by?

Should be easy enuff to come by when the rails are x rayed and replaced.
Other than that, they kinda frown on it when you borrow a piece thats already in place.

I got some road rail and a bigass milling machine.what do you think would be a fair price for the finished piece.post your quote here, dont send me a pm.

railroad

it is a federal offence to have it ,also the spikes.you might want to look into it.

good luck...

Do some research on Hadfield Manganese steel as that is basically what it is. Good luck machining it.

Somehow I think that Willie is joking...

any interest...

Would there be any interest in a Taig style bed made from something such as cast iron?
