cut tip shaping / maintenance tool

anyone have any experience with the ulti-mate tip tool, looks like it can do all i need any thoughts?

Dont get the ultimate tip tool, I have heard some horror stories, best bet is the cuetec bowtie tip tool search around and find a cheap one.

On my players cue I have a triangle tip and generally thats what I use unless otherwise needed.
I use a different tip on each shaft that I see fit, sniper, tiger medium, triangle, and the new shaft I just am getting in I need to experiment with.
But you cant go wrong with triangle, affordable and holds shape very well.

You also as for the shaping and everything, as you are just getting into your own personal cue, if there is a team at your school hopefully they will teach you, if not search on youtube the uses and be careful because ive seen people who "know what they are doing" take a nice chunk out of their ferrule.

as for tip diameters, start with 13mm its a standard and you can try going lower as you get better. I have one shaft at 12.6mm, and one at 12.5mm and just holding it, they feel completely diffefrent. Just a matter of what you like[again, thats what this all is].

Good luck in your choices hope you enjoy getting into the game.!

really the ultimate tip tool is no good? as far as shaping the tip this is the video i watched that i was going to follow.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1dpKymBlCY i saw that it was from the "Ozonebilliards" guy so i figured he wouldnt use a "bad product" but obviously i could be completely wrong.

as far as tip i've been reading about 12.5 and although i know it would take me some time to adjust too i'm thinking about buyin a 12.5 opposed to a 13 and toughing out the beginning hurdles because from my understanding once you grow into it a 12.5 will offer much more cueball control, draw, etc.

FWIW i will probably be ordering my cue this upcoming monday-ish

I have tips on shafts ranging from 13mm to 10.75mm with a few in the middle and the main difference in cue control/English/draw is the taper, not the tip size. A "pro" taper on a more narrow shaft is a little easier to get strong draw with but only because the cue gets less lift as it slides on your bridge.

Not saying to not get the 12.5, but don't expect it to actually make a noticeable difference.

Maybe im not as informed as i thought lol

Ok so right now im thinking ima get a....

Schmelke S series - 12.5mm Triangle tip

Only other question is what joint do people think i should get?

And cuetec bowtie vs ultimate tip tool

Good choice on cue. Triangle tip is ok but I highly recommend kamui black. A medium is perfect for you just starting out. The ultimate tip tool is great and does alot more than the bowtie. Good luck

triangle tip is fine for him. i have the bowtie and it is alright. i do have other porper tools as well that i use more often.

I have a Bowie also. I just prefer the utt. It's one of those personal preference things i guess. Evened gonna have a different opinion. Just have to try a few different and find what's right for you.

I've only ever had the bowties and I'll stick with them. I have other pool nerdy things in my case for other functions.

I'm partial to the 5/16 18 because that's what my current cues use but just go with something common like that. The joint isn't a make or brake decision.

hmmm i got 3 choices..

1. Schmelke brass to brass joint
2. 5/16"dia. 18tpi Brass pin & Insert
3. 3/8"dia. 10tpi Wood to Wood

im obviously looking for the best blend of longevity, feel, etc..

I would get the brass to brass joint.

I like the 3/8 x 10 wood-to-wood.

My bar beater:
Players 803 sneaky pete, orig. 20 oz., but now less (pulled the weight bolt out and played it that way for a while, but it was too light, eventually cut the bolt in half with a hacksaw and put it back in -- perfect)
Triangle hard tip (the original tip was a mushy piece of crap)

Total investment (including the dee-lux vinyl case): $70

r there any specific reasons or more just personal choice?

a lot is just personal choice. i had a mcdermott and it had a wood to wood joint and i really did not care for it that much. i have a 5/16 x 14 piloted and like it better. gotta experiment sometime.

read the billiardwarehouse.com description of the joints for schmelke and go with what you think will feel better for your style of play. my dads old schmelke has the pipe joint and when i get another schmelke just because i will get the pipe joint just because is "says" schmelke :)

only real difference description says is the classic schmelke joint offers forward balance and a harder hit..

the #1 schmelke joint looks like it definitely would b the most rugged/last longest though...
