Bemoaning the rise of the bar box

Halfjack87...Well then you've got your head in the sand. There isn't even ONE poolroom with 9' tables in all of Dallas...a huge metro market. There are many pool bars across the country, including Dallas, that have 7' Diamond tables, which play just like a 9' Diamond. Like it or not, the 7' table is here to stay...and hopefully Diamond will continue to replace Valley tables in that market.

In what world does a 7 foot diamond play like a 9 foot table. Yes, they are harder than a valley, not so much that I'd add 2 feet of difficulty on them.

WTF are duck pins

Not sure if you're serious but duck pins are the small ball and pins bowling. Duck pins actually are said to have got their start right here in Bmore. They are still pretty popular round these parts. We have dedicated duck pin alleys, and we have some alleys that are split 50/50.

I don't see pros sporting the claw. Anybody with a claw and a chalk holder dangling out of their pocket has my action for life.

I know you are something big in pool...but honestly I don't have a clue for what.

Is it just a claw and a chalk holder? Or can someone with only a claw take you up on your action?

How about some one who had a claw but lost it?

Enquiring minds want to know.

I have never heard of duck pins before. Bizarre.

I agree with the chalk holder comment lol. I hear it's changed, but the guy walking around with the chalk dangling from his pocket or even better the magnetic chalk holder used to be the code for " FISH IN THE ROOM - COME DRILL ME! ". Only problem with that was 9 out of 10 times they would not bet water is wet, and when one would play for a beer fun time was over! They would get DEADLY SERIOUS! The constant cleaning of the shaft, constant tip picking, the jacket or sweater comes off, they politely ask everyone within a 20 foot radius to please be quiet because " they are now in action ", and of course the unmistakable look of determination on their face - that they NOW MEAN BUSINESS!!!

Tough to find pool tables in pubs these days, really wasn't that long ago that there were loads of them - but many pool, or even snooker, clubs in England have at least one American pool table.

Every time I was in a train station in England, the pub always had a pool table. 2 foul rules.

Believe it or not there is pretty good action round here amongst the DP bowling community. Way, way more so than 10 pin. In duck pin as I said you use the small pins and balls, and you get three balls per frame. It's actually harder to strike and spare than in 10 pin too.

Every Saturday after I finished my paper route my older brother and two of the other kids in the neighborhood used to go candle pin bowling. It was very popular around the New England area back in the 60's.

Newcomers to our game need the bar table. Without the ability to run a few balls or make what to them is a tough out, they will never touch a big table or even step close enough to kook at it. Hence, as 9 foot players looking to expand our sport we sort of need the 7 foot tables.

I hate the 7 and even 8 footers, but i did learn to play on them and Im sure the majority of us had our days on them as well. Perhaps our personal games have been refined so well that we only appreciate playing on great equipment that the 7 foot bangers havent torn up.

Hell i dunno much, i just know that i had to start somewhere... And it was in a smokey bowling alley with 6- 7' Valleys. I graduated onto a 9' and will never look back, but i sure do like when Joe Cool and his pocket chalker step onto my side of the pool room.

The fact that I started on a 12' Snukr table kinda takes the air out of your argument. I didn't even see a bar table till I turned 18 and could go to bars.

Thanks I had no idea. is that like 5 pin bowling?

We have a pool hall that opened in my area in the past year and they have very nice brand new Diamond tables, 4 nine footers and 10 seven footers. Very nice place with all new Diamonds, they serve food, and beer and can barely keep enough people in the place to pay the light bill.
Quite frankly they get very little support from the local players league bangers or high level players. They have done tournaments on both the 9 and 7' tables and done handicap and non handicapped tournaments. Can barely get them filled and have cancelled many because nobody shows up.
Pool players need to help support these places, or stop complaining there is no place like them to play at. A little sad.

We had a room about that size with about that mix of 9' & 7' tables. All diamond, even called the Diamond Billiards Club. I think they lasted about a year. Damn shame, because it was a nice place I thought. Your situation describes that one as well. Too bad!

I don't know what 5 pin bowling is but I'm gonna have to say no. Duck pin is almost exactly like 10 pin. It uses all 10 pins, is scored just like 10 pin. The only differences are the size of pins and balls, and you get 3 balls per frame ( but you still can only spare on the second ball ).

Sounds like you should buy a table and just play at home.

I already do. 9ft Gold Crown 2. I enjoy having friends over that enjoy excellent equipment and a challenge A few times a week. Nice and peaceful, no woofing, no drug addicts, and best of all-- no handicaps!!!

I think we should all go WITH it, not against it. Make it into what we want. Push for better equipment, tighter pockets (maybe), better lighting, etc.

The bar table is here to stay, people play pool in bars now. The "pool hall" is a thing of the past and we can miss it and remember the good 'ol days, but they're gone. Let's take what we have today and make it better, teach the bangers how the game is supposed to be played. Teach the bar owners how much better it is to have a pool culture on their tables and not a couple bangers here and there spilling drinks and being pains in the asses.

Disclaimer - I learned to play in a great pool hall on 9' GCs, and played there 10 years most days of the week, I miss it every day. It was a part of me, as cheesy as that sounds, But it's gone. Guess what - I still like pool and have adapted to 7' Diamonds now and it's still fun.

Tables?

So does a 9 ft table with 5in. pockets play tougher than a7ft diamond with41/2 in. pockets?Everyone is saying its so easy to runout on the barbox so why dont you go steal all this money at these bar tourns.?You can count the times anyone runs a set on one hand Shane and Dennis should be easy targets they dont run sets.

Its definately easier on a 7' table, but it is easier for everyone. My main point is that it is not as enjoyable to play on. That is all.
