Best 1p player?

OK, I've asked this on RSB a while back and I'm sure it's been asked here but I'm new here so..

Who's the best? I've heard Efren by most everyone but where does everyone else rank? What would your top 5 be?

I also know that Cliff is supposed to be right up there, but then I heard that he got whooped not too long ago by Efren. Any truth to that?

Does Tony Chohan rank in the top 5? He's the only really good 1p player I've been able to watch for more than a little while. He looked pretty dang good the couple of times I saw him play.

I would rank Efren as the best right now, and while he has given Joyner a ball and beaten him, if Joyner's in stroke Reyes isn't giving him a ball, although he'd still be the favorite. My top are as follows:

1 - Efren Reyes
2 - Cliff Joyner
3 - Nick Varner
4 - Shannon Daulton
5 - Billy Palmer

Actually I consider Joyner and Varner evenly tied for 2nd best. I didn't list John Schmidt because I've never seen him play 1-pocket bt I hear he plays jam up. Some honorable mentions would be Scott Frost, Jose Parica, Allen Hopkins, Alex Pagulayan, Buddy Hall.

You don't think Marco Marquez plays top player one hole?

Eric

I didn't know Palmer was so good. He was here in Denver for a while, I should have made it a point to see him play.

I think Doug from Boulder who posts on here said he played him and broke even... I broke even with Doug, so me and Billy must play the same speed! LOL.

I saw Scott Frost play for a bit in Vegas but not a real sink your teeth into it kind of match, he didn't play too well.

What about that guy from Oklahoma, the action guy, can't remeber his name right now but he plays for big money.

I think he plays well but not quite as good as the others I listed. The players listed are based on tournaments not gambling. Whe I've seen Marquez in tournaments he seemed not quite good enough to pull it off. I'm sure he plays great in money matches though, but that's a whole different story.

Hey Eric, you've been the hot topic lately! Glad to see you're OK. Tell your fiance I said hi. I'll be in KC in a week if you're going to be around that way again.

I think it might be best to think of these guys as on tiers. Is Efren on his own tier or are 2-3 other guys up there with him?

Oh yeah, Billy Palmer can play. In fact there's a very good match with him and Reyes from I think the Legends of One Pocket on accu-stats, get your hands on that one. You may have seen Palmer on a not so good day, that happens all the time, for example: about 10 years ago Jose Parica was in NYC playing a local shortstop 9-ball just for fun and Parica was way out of stroke (maybe he was stalling) and for years the shortstop would say that Parica was overated and didn't see what the fuss about him was. Then he drew Parica in the U.S. Open 9-ball and Parica drilled him 11-1. But the point is a first impression can really have an effect.

Good point, Alex. Presently I think Reyes is in his own tier alone; probably ditto for Joyner in 2nd. There are a lot of guys tied for 3rd place. I'd put Buddy Hall above Palmer. Palmer is a good tournament player, and probably the best on the West Coast. About a year ago I asked Joyner how he would play Palmer. He said, "I'd give him 10-7." I believe he would. Joyner is one of the best for the cheese.

Alex, I've seen and/or played against all of these guys and here's my take on them....

Efren is number 1.

Cliff is number 2.

For third best I call it a toss-up between Scott Frost, Larry Nevel, Shannon, Jose Parica, and Corey....Some people might not think that Nevel belongs in this group cuz they don't see him out there playing in high stakes games, but trust me, I know his game well, he belongs in this group.

In my fourth group, and close behind group three, there's a huge group of guys that I would bunch together, guys such as: Gabe Owen, Jeremy Jones, Alex the Lion, Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, Santos, Shawn Putnam, James Walden, Tony Chohan, Jason Miller, Billy Palmer, Hillbilly, Jerry Slivka, John Schmidt, Rafael Martinez, Ginky, Marco Marquez, Jesse Bowman, etc. - Ghost

Corey is that good at 1P? I have a tape of him breaking hard in a tournament, I realize that was back when he didn't play the game but he's gotten that good that fast?

That's who I was thinking of, James Walden. I thought he was better.

Thanks for the comprehensive list.

10-7! wow, that's more than I would have thought possible. That's what I get from the local top dogs around here. Well one of them anyway. I wonder what I'd need against these guys... I know the answer, too much.

So I guess I'm down about the 23rd group....gives me something to work on:D

That would be "James -ScaredyCat- Walden.

What about that guy from Oklahoma, the action guy, can't remeber his name right now but he plays for big money.

James Walden?

Gabe Owen plays pretty sporty 1-hole also, I hear.

Efren
Cliff
Scott F.

Those are my top three. I had to put Scott in there just because he is an absolute blast to watch in action........ :D

You forgot two very big names IMO in the game of 1p.

Marshall "Squirrel" Carpenter and Tex "Sonny" Springer.

Today's one hole is more adapt at break and run...these two old guys could out move just about anyone in their day.

But I still feel the best from 20 years ago would be Grady Matthews...always good for the cheese.

Jeremy and Gabe just happen to play pretty well too.

Now Alex,

I never said that I broke even with Billy Palmer. I did say that I played him for over 5 hours and was down about 6 games. I think that Billy Palmer is an excellent player but nowhere near top 10 in the world. As far as you and I playing even, I would suggest that we both post about $2K and find out for sure. Just let me know when you want to play.

Regards,

Doug
