Best 1p player?

I pretty much agree ...

Alex, I've seen and/or played against all of these guys and here's my take on them....

Efren is number 1.

Cliff is the solid number 2.

For third best I call it a toss-up between Scott Frost, Larry Nevel, Gabe Owen, Shannon, and Corey.

In my fourth group, and very close behind group three, I would put Jeremy Jones, Jose Parica and Alex.

And in my final group, there's a huge group of guys that I would bunch together, guys such as....Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, Santos, James Walden, Tony Chohan, Billy Palmer, Hillbilly, Jerry Slivka, John Schmidt, Rafael Martinez, Ginky, Marco Marquez, Jesse Bowman, etc. Ghost

I have watched Gabe and Walden play a few times in 1 hole, they are not that far apart although Gabe wins most of the time. I have watched Scott Frost play too, and his 1 hole is much better than his 9 ball game, which is pretty well known. Some of the others, I have seen play 9 ball, but not 1 hole. I agree that Cliff is #2. I believe Gabe played Efren 7-9 at DCC and broke even with him.

Now Alex,

I never said that I broke even with Billy Palmer. I did say that I played him for over 5 hours and was down about 6 games. I think that Billy Palmer is an excellent player but nowhere near top 10 in the world. As far as you and I playing even, I would suggest that we both post about $2K and find out for sure. Just let me know when you want to play.

Regards,

Doug

I knew that would get you all riled up! LOL. I'm no idiot, I can't beat you even so I'm not betting 2k. You know I just started playing this game.

I'll throw 200 your way if you want to do a short race to 4 playing even or something like that. Or... if you really want to play, give me 9-7 to 5 ahead and I'll consider posting 2k. Angel gives me 10-7, Rizzo gives me 9-7 and I haven't beat him at it.. yet.

Anyway, my point was you can't tell at 20 a game with a guy like Palmer, at least I don't think you can. Did I get your best at 20 a game?

Alex

Just wanted to tweak my 'clocking list' a little

And last of all, just a smidgen of speed below this group, I would put guys like....Richie Rich, Ike Runnels, Eric Durbin, Mark Haddad, Mike Surber, and many more. Ghost

Best One Pocket Players

Yes, Efren is still top dog.

I don't know how Jose is playing these days, but he has to be near the top too, with Cliff and Scott Frost. Same with Buddy, up to a few years ago he was right there with the best. So were Sigel, Varner and Allen. How close to Cliff and Scott today, I'm not sure. But I have a feeling Cliff doesn't want to give too much weight to Nick, Allen or Buddy, even today.

Other top guys have to include Jeremy, Alex and Corey. Maybe right behind the top three. One guy no one has mentioned, but if you ever see him in action, he will open your eyes, is Stalev from Russia. He may actually be the best One Pocket player in the world right now, including Efren. I heard he challenged Efren a few years ago and got turned down. Don't know for sure.

Stalev is kind of a mystery man, rarely appearing here or anywhere for that matter. I'd like to match them up myself. Maybe I'll work on it for Derby City.

Also, I failed to acknowledge T-Rex, Larry Nevel, Jason Miller and Shannon, all great players as well.

Hey Gerry, Don't put yourself down like that - actually I've got you ranked up there in the 19th level ^_^

The top two are definitely:

1. Efren
2. Cliff

I think everyone would agree with that, but 3-5 could be seen alot of different ways and there are about 10-20 players you could make a strong case for in belonging on this list. I would definitely put Parica in my top five but the other two would probably be a toss up IMO.

Hey Alex,

True, you never know at $20 a game whether someone is really giving it their all. If I recall we only played 3 or maybe 4 games, which is hardly enough games to tell who knows what. I'm totally willing to post a couple hundred for a race to 4. If I won that, a spot could be provided. I just like to match up as you know.

By the way, you were a begining one pocket player over a year ago....what have you been doing the last year? I think you may holding out a little.

Regards,

Doug

I think you are getting pretty close with this list. I would probably put Parica in the group with Frost and company. I've been amazed by Efren and others at times with their vision and ability but watching Cory read stacks and track ball patterns is something else. He sells out occasionally but he sees some shots that boggle the mind. He is going to only get better.

Mark is here locally now. Maybe I'll try to match up cheap with him.

I watched a match between him and the guy that owns (or used to own) the cue club in vegas and Stalov lost. Not sure if it was even or what. I watched for over an hour and was very impressed by Stalov. That guy can bank.

Playing bar table crap, trying to get better at 8ball. I'd love to play more 1p but don't have the time to play enough.

10-7! wow, that's more than I would have thought possible. That's what I get from the local top dogs around here. Well one of them anyway. I wonder what I'd need against these guys... I know the answer, too much.

Alex
I saw Efren give a real good 1-pocket player, Mark Gregory (who would probably be in 1-Pocket Ghost's 4th or 5th tier) 13-8 a few years ago and beat him pretty convincingly. Efren just kept running 13 and outs. It was on an easy table, but still very impressive. If you can't run out EVERY time you have the opportunity, Efren can just about give you whatever he wants. The chasm between world-class 1P players and us "decent" players is enormous, and kinda discouraging. Just when you think you can play a little bit, you watch a champion and realize you've got a LONG way to go. Against the champs, you've got to bring a seriously meaningful shot EVERY inning or you're doomed; you think you've played 'em safe and the next thing you know they're out. Top 1P is a thing of beauty.

You're talking about Toby at the Cue Club in Vegas. Many players tried him out and didn't like it. On that one tight table, he was the man.
I was in with Toby when he beat Efren (getting weight) for 10K about three years ago.

Toby can sure play. His one handed game is jamup too. I snuck away from a las vegas business convention and watched Toby playing $500 a game 1P one handed and it was just AWESOME.

Jay, how was Toby playing Efren the time he won that 10k? What year was that?
