Efren and Parica
1 Pocket Ghost said:Alex, I've seen and/or played against all of these guys and here's my take on them....
Efren is number 1.
Cliff is the solid number 2.
For third best I call it a toss-up between Scott Frost, Larry Nevel, Gabe Owen, Shannon, and Corey.
In my fourth group, and very close behind group three, I would put Jeremy Jones, Jose Parica and Alex.
And in my final group, there's a huge group of guys that I would bunch together, guys such as....Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, Santos, James Walden, Tony Chohan, Billy Palmer, Hillbilly, Jerry Slivka, John Schmidt, Rafael Martinez, Ginky, Marco Marquez, Jesse Bowman, etc. Ghost

I never said that I broke even with Billy Palmer. I did say that I played him for over 5 hours and was down about 6 games. I think that Billy Palmer is an excellent player but nowhere near top 10 in the world. As far as you and I playing even, I would suggest that we both post about $2K and find out for sure. Just let me know when you want to play.

Doug

I don't know how Jose is playing these days, but he has to be near the top too, with Cliff and Scott Frost. Same with Buddy, up to a few years ago he was right there with the best. So were Sigel, Varner and Allen. How close to Cliff and Scott today, I'm not sure. But I have a feeling Cliff doesn't want to give too much weight to Nick, Allen or Buddy, even today.
Other top guys have to include Jeremy, Alex and Corey. Maybe right behind the top three. One guy no one has mentioned, but if you ever see him in action, he will open your eyes, is Stalev from Russia. He may actually be the best One Pocket player in the world right now, including Efren. I heard he challenged Efren a few years ago and got turned down. Don't know for sure.
Stalev is kind of a mystery man, rarely appearing here or anywhere for that matter. I'd like to match them up myself. Maybe I'll work on it for Derby City.

I'll throw 200 your way if you want to do a short race to 4 playing even or something like that. Or... if you really want to play, give me 9-7 to 5 ahead and I'll consider posting 2k. Angel gives me 10-7, Rizzo gives me 9-7 and I haven't beat him at it.. yet.
Anyway, my point was you can't tell at 20 a game with a guy like Palmer, at least I don't think you can. Did I get your best at 20 a game?
Alex
I think you are getting pretty close with this list. I would probably put Parica in the group with Frost and company. I've been amazed by Efren and others at times with their vision and ability but watching Cory read stacks and track ball patterns is something else. He sells out occasionally but he sees some shots that boggle the mind. He is going to only get better.1 Pocket Ghost said:Alex, I've seen and/or played against all of these guys and here's my take on them....

And last of all, just a smidgen of speed below this group, I would put guys like....Richie Rich, Ike Runnels, Eric Durbin, Mark Haddad, Mike Surber, and many more. Ghost

I saw Efren give a real good 1-pocket player, Mark Gregory (who would probably be in 1-Pocket Ghost's 4th or 5th tier) 13-8 a few years ago and beat him pretty convincingly. Efren just kept running 13 and outs. It was on an easy table, but still very impressive. If you can't run out EVERY time you have the opportunity, Efren can just about give you whatever he wants. The chasm between world-class 1P players and us "decent" players is enormous, and kinda discouraging. Just when you think you can play a little bit, you watch a champion and realize you've got a LONG way to go. Against the champs, you've got to bring a seriously meaningful shot EVERY inning or you're doomed; you think you've played 'em safe and the next thing you know they're out. Top 1P is a thing of beauty.Alex Kanapilly said:10-7! wow, that's more than I would have thought possible. That's what I get from the local top dogs around here. Well one of them anyway. I wonder what I'd need against these guys... I know the answer, too much.
