Best All Around Older Player In Ca

Maybe this will stir things up a little, and remember it is just my opinion, but I think "Those In The Know" will agree with me. First, I am going to divide the state up & then pick who I think is the best overall. The players should be 65 or over and I'm sure there are some I don't know about that we may hear from.

In Southern California it is Frank "The Barber" Almanza. Frank is still playing well and winning tournaments. I know Frank reads this forum and look forward to hearing his opinion if he will give it.

In Northern California I pick "ME", John Henderson. I play almost all the games (not straight pool), one handed or two handed, cash regularly in local tournaments against the best up here and will bet on myself when somebody is looking for action.

As far as my opinion on who is the best Sr. player in California, I pick Frank Almanza. We are old friends and have played many times when I lived in LA. Frank is a better tournament player, better 9 ball player, better bar pool player, better at most of the games, and always matched up better than me. I would consider myself a favorite over him playing one pocket and golf, especially on a 6 x 12, but that might be because he didn't play it much.

We have another guy in Ventura, Jerry "Baby Huey" Matchin, who still plays pretty sporty, but he might not be old enough yet. We also have to give some props to Jay Helfert, but I think Holdem gets most of his attention now.

If you know a Sr. player who can still play, lets hear about him, and if you want to match something up, maybe we can do something there too. John Henderson

Ismael "Morro" Paez. He'd be one of the best anywhere.

Dave, I think Morro is still in his 50s. Or, at least he looks like he's still in his 50s.

And so is Ernesto Dominguez.. still in his 50s but must be pushing 60 real close.

If you look in the dictionary under 'old fart' you'll see John Henderson's picture. But if you want a decent game of One Pocket, he will surely provide the lessons, but not for free. He's knowledge is worth every cent you spend.

There are a lot of great players in CA that are in their 50s and pushing 60.

Morro is an old friend and competitor of mine and Frank, and while he is a great player, he is not near 65 years old. I saw Morro at Hard Times in June and played his friend and road partner "King Kong" a little cheap one pocket.

How old is George Michaels? He plays pretty well.
He plays great. I think he won the last first of the month at Hard Times in Sacramento against a stellar field, but he is nowhere near 65 yet. Has had that white hair forever.

Forget about it. I never could beat any of you guys. But I will play some "social" Bank Pool.

I got one

The owner of Fast Eddy's still plays pretty sporty at 67. he he

By the way Jerry Machin was here last week and played Diego, give him 8-7 on his break, even on Diego's. Broke even this time. I don't thiink he is quite 65 however. Maybe? He plays great.

Wayne Norcross plays good. Straight pool champ from the late '60's and early 70's and still runs a hundred now and then. He's T.D. at DannyK's.

If it comes to drinking beer AND playing one pocket, there is only one better and he may be barred from Fast Eddy's.

I would try Diego some even if he ever gets up Sacramento Way. Even if he is a youngster.

I have to agree, you and Frank take the title of best seniors in the state.

I thought you were referring to Gene Ventura. Is "Filipino" Gene still alive? I'd heard he quit pool for poker. And he certainly must be 65! I don't know how he played as well and as long as he did being half (or full) drunk all the time. He sure was entertaining to watch though.

Delbert Wong must be getting up there too, John; but I wouldn't think he plays your speed at one-hole.

Doc

I have played against Frank and wholeheartedly agree with your assessment.

Nobody mentioned Bill Houck.....??? Hope he doesn't mind me mentioning his name, but he still plays a pretty mean game of nine ball.

Is MONK (Warren Costanza) still playing pool? I think he used to live in California for a while although I haven't seen him in several years.

He must be at least 70 by now. Would you consider playing him some even-up? (Joey just looking to see how well John plays) :)

He used to live here but has been in Reno quite a few years. On a good day I might play him some for $50 a game, but he definately is a better player than me. I think he is around my age (68) or a year younger. I'm not sure.

Gene is back in the Phillipines Doc. He is a little younger than me and played all games good. He talked me into giving him 9/8 once in San Francisco and tortured me.

If you were talking 9 ball only, Bill would be at or near the top of the senior list. I never saw him play anything but 9 ball, and one of the nicer guys in pool.
