Got a room with 27 Diamonds. People are asking me about carom tables. Talking with Diamond about a possible upcoming table. However, if I decide to buy something else what should I buy? I have seen many antique tables up for sale but haven't seen many modern ones. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

There are several European brands that are all good. Gabriels, Verhoeven, Chevillotte and Soren Sogaard are the most common in the US, I think. Breton tables are used in the Agipi tournament but I haven't played on them much.

All of them normally come with a built-in heating system and 2-inch slate. Paul Frankel often has Gabriels tables available after the events he promotes, so you may be able to save some on shipping from Europe.

IMO Verhoeven is slightly better table than Gabriel. Its my personal attachment to a T-Rail, believing its a sturdier design. Gabriel although makes a great table. Paul Frankel will have 2 or 3 @ the SBE for sale. I'd contact him NOW. They will probably sell before the tournament starts.

What I don't like about Verhoeven, Sogard, Chevillotte is the rail top is higher than the cushion/liner. Unless you're used to playing on these the condition will promote dings in your customers cues. The most common Chevillotte's have a sharp laminate edge. They do make wooden tables but much more expensive. Verhoeven and Sogard rails are wood which helps. Gabriel does it right IMO, with the transition on the same plane.

Sogard seems to be a table that wants to play sharp and short. Backups can be awfully wrong. They may have fixed that over the several years. I know they've gotten a lot of grief on this. If you're meticulous about keeping the table and balls clean and the table is set up correctly they play fine. If it's not kept up it will shorten quickly and no fun to play on. At least for me. Rather play on my old T-Rail Brunswick.

I've only played on one Chevillote which is never cleaned so don't know how they play. Some think this is the best table made. Could be, but that's an opinion just like what I've written.

These days Gabriels seem to be used at many if not most of the big tournaments. Don't know if that's because of preference or a promotional thing.

I was told by a manufacturer that European players prefer the the rail higher than the cushion, and made it that way for them.

I am the U.S. distributor of Verhoeven. There are reasons why Verhoeven is the #1 carom table prefered by most professional carom players around the world. I will not criticize any other manufacturers. I will only mention and recommend Verhoeven.

1. Verhoeven makes their components in house and does not farm out components to the lowest bidder. This keeps their cost a little higher but also their quality.

2. One of the biggest complaints among most carom players are tables that play short. That complaint is seldom heard if ever about Verhoeven. Most systems adapt well to the consistent play of Verhoeven.

3. Verhoeven offers a discount to all USBA members. The "middleman" cost has been removed to keep the price in line with other manufacturers.

Please feel free to contact me about owning a Verhoeven.

I have a Gabriels Impertator. I have had it for four years. It plays (and looks) great. I bought it from Paul Frankel and got a very good price. I recommend it highly. As with any table, you need a good mechanic to set it up and install the cloth properly. Thereafter, you need to keep the cloth and balls clean to maintain good playing conditions.

I also recommend Gabriels because it supports the USBA. The USBA and Gabriels have entered into a sponsorship agreement beginning in 2012 where Gabriels will help the USBA grow billiards in America by providing tables and other support for the USBA National Tournament.

If you only knew the irony of your last post 18.2balkline!

Happy Holidays to you and your family.

If you have the Diamond 9ft ProAm's, why not just buy a set of Diamond 9ft billiard rails and turn one of the Diamonds into a Diamond billiard table? Contact me if interested.
