Best commentator yet!

One who really knows the game and is spot on at saying what the shooter is doing.
Earl Strickland calling a Shane vs. Corey match...

I'm literally watching this right now as I logged in..maybe youtube is watching us both ^_^
nice commentary tho..it's a treat really
earl has his moments where he's an easy villain, but from listening to him here
he sounds like a nice guy that knows and enjoys his pool
happy belated 'pearl! great to *hear* ya, pal..

Earl on-n-off the table are two different people. Really is a nice guy and his insight after a lifetime of playing is very spot on.

Thanks for the link :-)

Yeah, pretty respectable effort by Earl here. Decent analysis, adequate delivery, and a decent voice for commentating. Better than most commentators, but surely not one of the truly elite.

Though Earl has been unkind to his fellow players, to fans, to tournament officials and to promoters, make no mistake about it, he has great respect for the game of pool, and this has always been the case.

Yup, he gets a good grade here.

I have heard earl before and thought
The same thing- he is the best ever.
I guess for the same reasons steve davis
Is so good, a life time of playing.

This link doesn’t work for me-

A Good Commentator

My idea of a good commentator is this.. I like the kind who try to define what just happened, maybe use a replay to do so.. Seeing a great shot, then listening to the description & and replay, is a reinforcement of what happened.

The commentators that try to upstage the Players, by attempting to describe whats going to happen & make mistakes, I turn those folks off, real quick.

NY State & Ocean State tourneys

I've found several videos of Earl commentating during the NY State and Ocean State tourneys. I enjoy listening to his commentary and insights. He's self-deprecating at times, as well.

Here's one:

Was just watching the video. I paused it to log in to Youtube to leave a comment and when I came back it was showing the private video page.

Not sure if anyone saw it all, but in the 16th game, Corey broke and made the 3 ball. He walked away from the table and Shane came up and started his run out. Didn't see the whole rack. It cut out in the middle of the rack. It was like nobody noticed the 3 went in. Even Earl didn't mention it. Not sure what happened.

Guessing the rule for 3 balls behind head string or pocketed in effect so it was an illegal break.

Screen shot : both the 1 and the 4 ball hit the side pocket points and stopped where you see them here -

I thought about that, but don't they usually get BIH for that? And doesn't a made ball override the 3 ball rule?

I know they were breaking with the 9 on the spot. Maybe they did have a different break rule.

Always been a Earl fan...good, bad or other wise. I was at the EXPO some 20 years ago with an elderly friend of mine and we were watching a match. I left to get some food and when I came back to the stands my friend is sitting with Earl give him advice on what he should have done in his previous match. I was mortified...but Earl just listened and engage my friend for 15 mins. Made my friends day and I'll never forget it.

Found this for International 9-Ball Open Guide and Rules :

III. Breaking
Players must lag for the opening break.
Players must break from the designated break box, which is 9” to the left and 9” to the right of the head spot. A legal break requires a minimum combination of 3 object balls either touching the head string line or be pocketed, or pocketing 2 object balls without any balls touching the head string. To "touch the head string line" means that the edge of the object ball must reach (break) the string line.
An illegal break is not a foul. The incoming player has the option to either accept the table in
position, or require his opponent to shoot from that position. Neither player may push out after an illegal break.
Pocketing the 9-Ball on a legal break in any pocket wins the game immediately.
Pocketing the 9-Ball on an illegal break requires that the 9-Ball be re-spotted immediately.

Watch his early day matches on YouTube and you can see he was genius on the table.

That covers all the bases. Thanks!

Sorry Guys

Don't know what happened. Last night I just went to youtube, then billiard network, then clicked on the match. Today the "private video" notice. Maybe they want you to pay now?

I'm pretty computer illiterate, tried signing up, still no luck.

Oh well, was fun while it lasted...

Good thing I watched it early, someone turned it off.
Earl doesn’t tell any stories, he just describes the situation on the table and for the most part tells us accurately how it’s going to unfold. As he stated, he played both players many times so he pretty much new how each player would play position. I wish I could watch it again. I think I could learn something from it.

Earl did a great job, Happy Birthday Earl
