Well my b-day is around the corner and I think I'm going to buy myself a new sneaky pete.

I was curious to get some opinions on here as to what Sneaky you'd buy for 500 or under.. Or if not a sneaky what other cue would you buy for 500 or under? (Plain jane custom?)

I currently play with a Schon, but it's always been a little heavy for me. So I figured I'd try something new for awhile. A friend of mine is getting a plain jane Morris right now fo 550 and I wouldn't be opposed to that, but living under the same roof, and having the exact same decorated "custom" cue might smack of being... "gay" for lack of a better word. So I'm kinda hesitant to go down that route.

I don't think that makes you gay....LOL :D but what type of hit do you like? Do you like the playablilty of the schon? If so than look for a stainless jointed sneaky. There are plenty of cuemakers that make a good playing sneaky. They range from the 180 range to the 600 range for fancy sneakies. Well Tell everyone what type of hit you like and what kind of sneaky looks good to you. Length, weight, Etc.

cocker and shurtz. both under 500 rage and very good customs.

shurtz can make sneaky's from 300$
cocker probably around the same price.

Scruggs sneaky - AKA Bob Frey Sneaky. Often regarded as the best sneaky petes ever made. Although "best ever" is debatable, they're playability is not.

Check out the FREYs. Plus they will re-sell for what you buy it for if you don't like it.
He used to buil all the Tim Scruggs sneakys,

frey's cues are great players indeed, another cuemaker that is really makin a name for himself for his fantastic playing cues is eric crisp (sugartree cues) you can contact him through easypooltutor, i will soon be playin with a dufferin modified by him with one of his shafts.

i think you will be able to purchase a sugartree sneaky from new2uq's soon if not now (i havent checked his site lately)

sneaky

How about Gilbert? they are right at 400 plus they are 3 piece cues and play great. Mike Stacy i have heard builds a good cue but haven,t played with any. Bob Frey is a great choice for a Schon style hit. Phillip makes awesome sneakys for around 400 and same style as your Schon just not alot out there. Jacoby makes a good cue but hits more like a Meucci in my opinion. Personally i play with my Gibert 3 piece but have a 6 point cue thats sits in a case. For the money i dont think you beat a gilbert. Sorry this is long but trying to help if you need more info feel free to email at 1mouse@charter.net

Well I did some searching on the board earlier today and read a bunch of posts from fellow AZ'ers...

I picked up the phone and talked to JP today and bought

http://www.cuesnthings.com/cues/sneakypete/i/1.jpg

That cue at 18 oz's and a 12.75 mm shaft. :)

I'll let you guys know how it turns out in a week or two!

If I don't like it then I suppose I can sell it here locally and try another one. I must admit (not sure why) the name "sugartree" is intriging me quite a bit. :)

DJ <--- hopes my g/f isn't buying me a pool cue for my b-day

I dont know if you can buy a better sneaky for the money than Bob Frey. Excellent hitting cues, wonderful craftsmanship... cant be beat. :D

you will be happy with it and both bob and j.p are great to deal with. and believe me the name sugartree is going to be very intriguing to everyone soon, his popularity seems to be sky rocketing, and there are not many of his cues being re-sold in the secondary market.

my opinion

frey, sugartree, scruggs, varney all good choices.. But it really depends on what kind of hit you want. Personally I have a scruggs and I only like the hit of my sneaky scruggs. Every other scruggs I have hit with I did not like. I've tried a zylr with the southwest style pin. It had a good hit but I liked my scruggs better. I shot with my friends frey. The shaft felt like plastic to me when I stroked it. As for schon, buy a low end schon, should hit like a highend schon :P.

a friend of mine had a troy downey that was about that price, or a lower end mezz. they play pretty good with a predator shaft

Sometimes better then a high end Schon.. I had an SL1 years ago that was by far and away my favorite cue to date. Somebody posted a link to old Schon's awhile back and I found my current que on that list of pictures (couldn't pretend to tell you what it is now) it's a mid range Schon though.. I liked my SL1 better.

I'm looking forward to trying out this Frey Sneaky. A buddy of mine Mark has one, and I was very impressed with how his played.
