Best cue refinisher

I have an old cue I need to have refinished. Mostly needs a new coat of clear finish. Of the 2 refinishers (Muellers and Proficient Billiards) which is the best? Has anyone had a cue repaired/refinished by both and can compare the workmanship?

I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Scott at Proficient's has an excellent reputation and RAT has shown some great work on here (especially that old Joss!). I think you'd be happy with either!

Of course I'll be honest....

I have heard nothing but good things about Scot at Proficient. He does good work, does so in a reasonable amount of time, and at a fair price.

I have said nothing but good things about myself. ;) I do good work, do so in a reasonable amount of time, and at a fair price. I've been doing this full time for almost 11 years. I've refinished hundreds of cue. I've built more than a 1000. I am always here (except yesterday; sick baby) you can call, write, email, fax, come visit, or yell out of the window to me. I stand behind my work and aim to please. Plus, I'm just an all around nice guy! (sarcasm; one more service I offer)

I might be stating the obvious but...If Mueller's, a very popular Pool & Dart supplier, stake their reputation on RAT, he must be very good at what he does. If they had many complaints, I don't think he'd still be a representative of their company.

I'd go with Proficient in a heartbeat, over Muellers. Aren't they mostly just a catalog? I'm only guessing here, but they probably subcontract work like that out.

Personally, I sent one cue to JW Petree (an AZB member) to refinish, and was so happy with the work that he's now got another one to work on. His work is great, the turnaround is quick, and the price is very reasonable.

UPDATE: I just read read Ratcues' post above. My concern with Mueller's was that you wouldn't know who's doing the work -- they could send it out to anyone. But it appears that there is a single person with a lot of experience that does their work. Still, it seems like they should mention you by name on their cue repair page.

I do all of the repair work for Muellers. We do not subcontract anything out. We are a wholesale company but we also have a woodshop, injection molding, and a cue shop. I know that the catalog should have my name in but that's not my call. It states it in all three Blue Books.

I charge $85 for the refinish and then whatever wrap you need. $35 for linen, $55 for textured leather, etc.

So $85 to refinish and what if the cue is wrapless and someone wants a wrap put on,dont you have to cut the cue and wouldnt you charge more then?
 
I would charge $85 to refinish the butt, $30 to undercut the wrap channel, and then $35 for linen or $55 for textured leather.....

I agree about the prices. What is your usual turn around time for a full refinish including rewrapping with linen. I might have to get my It's George redone in the next month or so. After this, I will communicate via PM's. :)

I am the one that owns the Joss mentioned a few times above and am beyond pleased with his quality and turnaround time. Communications has been outta sight and I would definitely recommend RAT to anyone!!!

As a matter of fact, I am soon to contact him to make me a new cue as well... :p
 
I use a polyurethane auto finish. It works well for me. Turnaround time on a refinish is about 2-3 weeks.

I'm hooking up with Ryan (RAT) in less than a week to have a stack leather wrap done and write a review on AZ...

If nothing else, he's definitely a really nice guy. I have heard nothing but good things about his work from others...
And his pricing is awesome! :D

I had an old Palmer refinished by Proficient. They had to replace the old chipped-to-hell butt cap which said "Palmer" so there's nothing on the cue identifying the maker anymore. Still, I was happy with the job they did. But it was a crap shoot because I didn't really know them. If given the choice between a stranger and someone I know, even if it's only thru the AZ forum, I'd rather go with someone I know. JMO
