Best day of my 14.1 career!

I know it's still blooming and I've only been playing since February seriously but today was the tops! I went to red shoes at 11 to play for a few hours and really tried to work on my game. Pocketing balls first and then working with position. Ran a couple 12s and another 14! Anyway as I'm packing up to leave I saw John and asked him how I could establish a handicap so I could play in some of the upcoming tourneys. He explained it to me and then said screw it you got time lets play a race to 100 ill see where your games at. He taught me so much today it was crazy! One rack he would do safety play and then next positioning and working patterns. Then if I missed an easy one he showed me what I did wrong I mean really explained it then we went outside for a smoke and he gave me a nice confidence building lecture. We went back in and finished the race and the last two racks he showed me what it was all about...wow that guy can flat out play! With his help and teaching and some do overs I managed to put up 51 to his 100. He showed me ettiquette, rules, and great lessons to carry with me through my game. I can't thank him enough for his time. He said he thinks he knows about where my game is at but wants me to play another match with someone else to set it in stone. I was actually happy with the way I played since when I played with Dennis's friend terry in February I got dropped 100-27 and that was with his help too! I did manage to put up a run of 10 and play a couple good safeties today in the match! What an AWESOME day!!!:D

Congratulations on all the progress ... a perfect day of pool! It was nice you ran into someone with both the knowledge and willingness to help you -- sounds like you did your part by absorbing and applying as much as you could.

i think something that could also really help you would be sit down and watch a video on youtube watch the jon schmidt video of him running 200 and somthing in his buddies garage he commentates and it helped some of my friends who were at a similar skill level to you

Tommy: I am glad you got the opportunity to spend some time with John Lavin. He is a great guy and a pretty sporty straight pool player, when he deigns to play it. He had a 100 ball run years ago in the presence of none other than Dallas West. Talk about pressure.

Anyway, his vice of choice these days is one pocket and coincidentally he is having a one pocket tournament there this weekend for those of you so inclined. I have included a picture of John and regular Ed Latimer, who is also always willing to help a player learn.

ive watched just about every video i can find on youtube and everything that dennis posts and yes they really do help alot. john also recommended a couple of books as well.

Great shot of John and Ed, BOTH are great teachers and players. Tons of fun to hang around those guys.

Good luck with your game, it is a fun one.

I would recommend the How to Run a 100 videos from both Rempe and the one from Schmidt.

thank you for all of the encouraging replies! i want you all to know its you gentlemen in this forum that i have been able to improve. every post that give me an idea and every video that i can watch is awesome. dennis ill be at red shoes again tomorrow 11a-3 or 4 if you want a match lol. john said i need to play another regular to solidify a handicap. i figure you qualify:D

It sounds like a great session and I especially like the mention of teaching etiquette. That is one thing that is lacking in a lot of players in my league and it is irritating. Sadly, it sort of goes with the times.

keep it up! You are so happy to have many milestones ahead, like 15 and 20 and 25 balls ;)

Glad to read that you are doing good. You are lucky to live in the Chicago area to pick the minds of all those great players over at Red Shoes. Keep doing good & try to give up the smoking... it will catch up to you down the road.

Tommy: Sorry, I missed this email. Yesterday at 11-3, I had my nose to the grindstone in downtown Chicago. I play a match against John Rawski next Thursday night. He just ran a 55 last week. He is a new player to the league who is constantly running 30s, 40s and 50s and I look forward to playing him. Two weeks from this Saturday is Red Shoes World Championship Qualifier. You should stop in and watch, if you are free. You could probably find a game with some of the guys (like me) that get knocked out.

Later,
d

@TommyLee

Great to read how *infected* you are buddy ^^

If you find a person where it makes "click" for you and *him/her* by learning or getting instruction it s the best what can happen.
but never forget that it s one thing that s absolutley necessary-and i m sure you have it. The thing, that you have to love what you do. Then you will have the willing, joy and the passion for it.

you ll have a lot of fun during your journey,

have a smooth stroke,
lg from overseas,

Ingo
