I have been playing for a few months and I've taken a few lessons from a guy but don't seem to be getting a whole lot out of it... who has the best instructional dvd's were I can learn the most....

the jimmy reid dvd's are really good. i just got them myself and these are the best ive seen. the only ones i've watched that made me say, "i didnt know that".

A few dvd's that I leaned alot from are pool IQ vol 1 &2. Volume 1 covers kicking and Volume 2 covers cue ball control, If I had to choose one of them for a beginner I would rather have volume 2.

Mastering pool is also very good all 3 dvd's are great.

For banking I would also recommend all of Freddie the beard's stuff.

And the best practice drill dvd & book would be Joe Tuckers Guaranteed Improvement Book and DVD.

If I just started playing a few months ago I'd start by getting a dvd with the basics first. It's so important to learn the basics right, before you get into the other stuff. There are plenty of them out there that can help with that. Also watch players on the streams and action matches on TAR. If you go to poolrooms where good players play and gamble, sit and watch them and how they do things. Lessons from a proven instucter will probably get you going faster though. Johnnyt

The best video is a matter of oppinion, and it often depends on what the person needs or wants to learn. The best video for one may not be the best video for someone else. Some may be better at teaching fundamentals where others may be better at teaching general knowledge about playing the game.

It sounds like your a relative new player, so if I could give you any advice it would be to work hard on your fundamentals now before you ingrain bad habbits that are had to change later.

Jerry Briesath put out a great video for the BCA that is affordable and easy to follow. http://www.poolndarts.com/p-5161-Billiard-Congress-of-America-s-How-to-Play-Pool-Right-DVD/

Don Feeny put out a series of videos a while back that covers a wide range of subjects. His delivery is very dry, but if you can get through them there is a LOT of good information.

Gene Albrecht has a video out on sighting, if you have been reading the boards at all lately Im sure you have already read plenty of comments on this one. But I can tell you I have never seen what he teaches in any other book, video, or with any other instructor accept for one that Gene had previously shown the video.

I have not had a chance to purchase it yet, but several people speak very highly of Max Eberle's "Powerful Pool". It may be the best overall choice for where it sounds like you may be as it covers so many different topics from fundamentals to advanced knowledge. http://maxeberle.com/

I know you said you have taken some lessons, but you need to make sure the person you are taking them from can teach well. Not everyone that plays well is a good teacher, and some of those that teach well may not be the strongest player in their area.

Keep in mind it doesnt matter how many lessons you take or books/videos you watch or read. Improvement comes through meaningful practice, not just banging balls around. Granted if you play enough you will start to improve some, but with knowledge and deliberate practice you game will improve MUCH faster.

Solid gold!

If you are playing for only a few months, some of the instructional videos may be a little much for you to consume at this time. Most of the videos that have been mentioned; I have seen and appreciate them all, however you are at a stage in your journey where you may benefit better from tghe information that Dr. Dave Alciatore has accumulated and published.

Dave's Video of Encyclopedia of Pool Shots is chock full of shot after shot of practical information that move you forward.

You can also obtain valuable information and additional dvds of his at www.dr-dave-billiards.com

Don't fail to visit http://billiards.colostate.edu/ where Dr. Dave provides lots of Free information for your perusal.

After you have consumed all that has been suggested in the previous posts and the information offered by Dr. Dave, you can listen to JoeyA's SECRETS OF THE PROS on recorded matches (available on youtube) where I do commentary. When I share the commentary duties of professional pool matches with professional pool players, I have them sign a contract where they are required to provide the intimate details of their PERSONAL SECRETS OF PROFESSIONAL POCKET BILLIARDS. :D

There's actually a whole section of the forum dedicated to this, complete with a list of all the best videos with plenty of reviews and feedback on each.

http://forums.azbilliards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=84

Be sure to change the "Show Thread From" option at the bottom of the page to "All Posts" otherwise you will be missing out on the majority of the content (only the last 2 weeks are shown by default, which is pretty ridiculous IMO)

.

I second this post, Joe Villalpandos' meathods make sense, are easy to understand, and are quickly applied to your game if you take the time to learn the systems. I can't wait to see what he has coming out this year for Volume 3! ;)

My friend, as in all walks of life there are are many recommendations by well meaning people. But recommendations often come without a true understanding of the problem. Ask yourself this first. What do you want to know. Do you want to improve your stroke? Do you want to understand the movement of balls in relation to each other? Do you want to know how balls rebound from rails? Do you want to know the nuances of gambling? Etc?

The answer is allusive as the question. While books, DVDs, private instruction, the AZ forum, etc. may answer questions---the answers may be well meaning but not correct.

With that said I would suggest one idea: Determine what your needs are and what method do you learn best with.

After you have thought about this and would like to discuss---send a PM.

WOW so there are dvd's for each aspect of pool.... well since I"m just starting out then the basics... stroke & aim then whatever is next

My introductory were books and videos by Robert Byrne. If you have never been into pool so far I highly recommend you start with these. Watch "Mastering pool" by Mika Immonen also, in Europe we have Ralph Eckert series for beginners and advanced players. As long as you improve you will want to watch mentioned Joe Villalpando's Pool IQ DVDs, and Jimmy Reid's - I second that, hands down

I'm totally agree that "steve davis champions way" is one of the best, if not the best (to me). Altlthought the video has been the market for 26 years, the video still can provide the great information to not only snooker begineers, but also pool players the most important skills which are the correct and solid fundamentals. Experienced players like me can also get benefits from the way of building up solid foundation and overcome the slump, hopefully!

I highly recommend the first one to four, the rest is about the statics of playing actual snooker game, which you can watch if you like.

hey.............it's FREE from youtube, what you can ask for

If you are a new player get a copy of Robert Byrnes standard book/video volume 1 and then 2 later, its been out for years,it will give you the hows and whys in such a way you cant help but to understand the effects and know why ,if I could only have 2 these would be MY choice,Ive got the videos not the books. good luck
